I sincerely hope that this is not the actual finalized name. I think I might write a letter to Nintendo. Hell, I'd rather buy a Nintendo Shitbox than a Wii...

I kind of like it, and I think this thing is slick. "Wii" could be a brand like "iPod."

Are you sure it's not pronounced "why"?
After the "Go" rumors, I was expecting it to be bad, but never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be THIS bad.
"Go" actually sounds pretty f'ing good in hindsight!
Sheesh.

Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes that the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.
So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."

I think the bigger issue is that people were just used to the name Revolution.. it's been discussed to death on the internet for a couple of years now (or has it just been one?). I'm not saying Wii is a great name.. but there was going to be this amount of criticism on whatever they changed it to. I think what bothers me the most about it is that it's a single syllable name, I don't know.. just my gut feeling on it (same thing with Go).

They could call it the Nintendo Shitbox and I'd still buy it-huh?
yeah im gonna still buy it but ill call it the revolution - nodoubt
Still getting one at launch though.-tenaciousdave
Disgraceful. Let me also state that I will buy one opening day.-gimmepilotwings
I should probably mention that I'll still be picking one up on launch day-MaxF
I'm buying one regardless.-devynal
---
So you see, with its capabilities and price point, it's still going to sell like hotcakes with crack on them. I just love what gimmepilotwings said. Contradictory in every way, but the same thing thousands of gamers are saying right now.
Tell me you're not getting one because of the name. I'd love to hear.

People who were going to get it anyway will be unfazed by the name change. That's not an issue.
The problem will be in marketing to the non-gamer and the gamer they've lost due to time and their "kiddie" image. Walk up to someone on the street and ask them if they're interested in a "Nintendo Wii" and see if they even give you a chance to explain why (not wii ) it is worth their time.

Of course those of us who wanted the system before the name change will complain, but still buy it. As was mentioned above, the name is just terrible for people who already have a negative and kiddy image of Nintendo. I know I know, "screw those people" right. The problem is you can't keep ignoring them forever. Hopefully this is a really late April Fool's joke.

I was planning on getting one, but now I think I'll pass. Yes, I'm serious. The name goes a long way toward telling you where Nintendo is coming from these days. They have given up the US market. After thinking about the name, I started thinking about Gamecube and the "awesome first party games."
Awesome Gamecube Games:
Zelda: Wind Waker
Animal Crossing
Good GC Games:
Paper Mario
Eternal Darkness
Okay GC Games:
Metroid Prime
Super Smash Brothers
Mario Sunshine
Pikmin
Mario Sports Games
I'm not going to spend launch day money on a system with at best 6-8 "awesome" games that I can't play on my 360 w/ better graphics.
Maybe the controller will be awesome. That would be a first since SNES, though.
I'll wait for the inevitable price drop to $99 and buy the 4 games I want.
What about the downloadable classics? Uhhh, I own them all. I bought them for $50 a pop when they were new. If I really want to play them, I have the ROMS, too, for convenience.
Edited to add: LET THE FLAMING BEGIN!!!!
