Also, my Costco did not have any DS lites this morning... Did anyone find a DS at Costco yet?

The Bus 06-11-06 12:16 PM

Picked it up at GS, the store was packed. They got enough to cover pre-orders. Went to Wal-Mart to get my girlfriend one as well. They still had 4-5 in stock at around noon.

The Bus 06-11-06 12:19 PM

How long do I need to let it charge before I can play? Can I play while it's plugged in and charging?

sureAV421 06-11-06 12:50 PM

yes, but it will fully charge slower. its in the instruction booklet. And damn, the face buttons are so tiny. This is my first handheld since the gamegear.

Josh H 06-11-06 02:00 PM

Wow. The pics and videos on the net didn't do justice how much brighter the DS is.

New Super Mario Bros looks fucking outstanding on it, like seeing the game for the first time.

The new, longer/thicker stylus is great too. Set my new high score on the whack a mole mini game on my first try, and it was totally do to being able to point more accurately with that stylus.

Will have to pull Metroid out again and see if I can play it with the Lite and its stylus without my hands cramping up, and if you can see in the too dark levels better on the new screens.

Definitely a worthwhile upgrade. Glad I talked myself into it, and glad I didn't find one early last week when I was looking as it was well worth a weeks wait to get Brain Age and the case/cleaning cloth for free.

pinata242 06-11-06 02:43 PM

Dammit, Josh, keep that to yourself! I don't want to hear any more reasons why I should upgrade.

eatntae 06-11-06 03:00 PM

Is the DS Lite supposed to come with the wrist strap + thumb cap? I just remembered that the original DS did, and I didn't find one in the DS Lite box.

Michael Corvin 06-11-06 03:17 PM

I need to find a wrist strap as well.

I had forgotten how fun and addicting the old style mario games are. New Mario Bros. rocks!

I think it was IGN that said in their DSL review that Metroid is like a new game on the lite. Turned an average game that you could barely see anything into a great game.]

It's not listed on the box where it gives the contents, so I'm guessing no in the US for some reason.

I'll probably just switch the one over from my regular DS, then again never used it after Mario 64 anyway.

Sorry. I was all blah blah, the current DS screen and design is fine blah blah.

But I was wrong. The DS lite is worlds better. Possibly the only negative is I have a feeling the new d-pad (think it's the same as the one on the GBA micro) will suck for fighting games for those that play them.

Also going to post this here

Got my at Best Buy this morning, no problems. But the cashier said an interesting thing to me when I said that I really wanted the black one but I didn't want to wait till it released later this year. He said (grain of salt) that the black one was being released next month. He seemed sure of it.

I ended up buying the 2 years warranty in case of dead pixels, screen scratches, etc for $20 and then he told me that just 'in case' I did have to return it under that warranty, that I could probably get a black one at that time!

We'll see.

Now I need to turn it on and see what all of this fuss is about.

A question though regarding Wi-Fi. Is this hard to set up and do I need a wireless router (which I have) in my house to get the signal? Or are there wireless signals all around the major cities of the world that I can just pick up as I go?

Chris

After just sitting down with the DS Lite... have to agree with Josh... this is worlds better, and the videos really didn't do the system justice. Well worth the upgrade (which was made cheaper, since GS gave me $70 for my old DS)

The US Lite does not come with a wrist strap, but we have a much, much cheaper cost than Japan or Europe so I am not complaining. I just used my Phoenix Wright strap with mine and you can order a strap from Nintendo's online store.

I have mixed feelings on the control pad. The micro pad was a nice upgrade over the crappy GBA SP pad, but I liked the slightly bigger pad the original DS had. This one will probably be okay though. I never had any issues playing games on the micro.

WhattheFFF 06-11-06 05:14 PM

how do you transfer your profile?

kermite 06-11-06 05:29 PM

Ok, so I bought one last night at midnight at Walmart. My husband hogged it up. So we just went to Best Buy and bought another one w/ the free Brain Age. We stopped by Target to get a couple games and they had a butt load left. Very good purchase!

Put a wifi enabled game in your old ds, go to the wifi settings in that game and there's the option to transfer, then just follow the instructions.

Decker 06-11-06 06:58 PM

Just picked one up at BB with that $20 warranty. I usually shy away from those, but for $20, I can always bring it back in if I don't like it or something. If nothing else, I'll upgrade if they ever improve on this model or throw in a free game or something. I was going to pass on this when I saw the absurd amount of restrictions on the warranty, but the CS rep assured me they'll take it back for store credit "for customer satisfaction".

REL77 06-11-06 07:07 PM

Damn, I got one at EB, and it has 1 dead pixel!!! I got the $20 warrenty as well.. Can I take it back and get another one there?

Fandango 06-11-06 07:32 PM

Nintendo sells a Wifi usb adapter if you don't have a wireless router but since you do you won't need it. As for the setup if it detects your router's signal it should be as simple as inputting your WEP key and putting in the mac address of the lite if you have that on. I haven't tried using it outside but places like Mcdonald's and starbucks have wireless hotspots that you can use.

nevermind 06-11-06 08:02 PM

There's no WPA support, huh? Bummer. All my other stuff is on WPA. I'd hate to have to switch it. If I get the USB adapter will that allow me to only have the DS wirelessly through there? Is that adapter WEP or does just DS systems see it?

Josh H 06-11-06 08:09 PM

Is Wep only and no WPA support.

Don't know about the USB adaptor. Maybe look on www.nintendowifi.com

Gizmo 06-11-06 08:10 PM

If you have a dead pixel, call Nintendo. They will replace it for free. However, if you spent $20 on a warranty, return it. Nintendo will send you a totally new unit and will not match the serial # on the receipt.

As per the Black DS Lite, we would know before a Best Buy employee :-)

REL77 06-11-06 08:19 PM

but would it be easier to return it to EB right now to get a new one, if they have it in stock?

Spiderbite 06-11-06 08:25 PM

So explain to me again how to look for dead pixels. I haven't turned mine on yet. Is it obvious from the boot up screen if you have one or some? If so, I wouldn't think EB would have a problem exchanging it, would they?

One other question...now that I have a huge libray of GBA games to choose from as well, is there a definitive (and current) list of all GBA games and DS games. I found what looked to be a really old GBA game at target (Road Rash Jailbreak) for $9.99 new and snapped it up since I have loved every Road Rash created. I figure there are a lot of older cheap games out there to try but I would love to see a list. Thanks.

Josh H 06-11-06 08:31 PM

It will just be a pixel that doesn't change. It could stay black, commonly they stay white. So you might not see it on the boot up screen. Just look around the screen when you're eplaying a game and see if you notice any spots that stay white or another color.
