An Open Letter to Light Bloom: I Hate You

Man, I swear there's nothing more annoying than light bloom in games. I don't know when they figured out how to do it, but lately every single damn game has it. And it's artifical and annoying as hell. And I'm blaming everyone. This isn't just on the Xbox 360, this is on the PS3 too.

I appreciate the fact that you're trying to add on more realistic effects, but this reeks of overuse. This is like the new lens flare.

Burnout is probably the worst of them all. It's like everything in the whole game is made out of epoxy resin and there's a dozen 500W flood lights 4 feet from everything.

To me, effects like these always work if they're subtle. The one effect I do like nowadays (which GRAW does well) is the looking into the sky, all the buildings turn dark, looking at the buildings, the sky turns clear bright white. That's more of a true optical effect.

I don't really let light bloom ruin any game I just saw how much it has proliferated and how much it has been used incorrectly and I shed a small tear.

I noticed that on Oblivion and I wondered what that was called. It wouldn't be that bad if it was toned down.

Its called HDR (High Dynamic Range) Lighting. It's supposed to properly mimic light contrast. Agree that it can be overused although most of those pics look ok to me.

It's just the new toy that's currently getting touted around, they'll tone it down when the novelty is gone. But for the time being, they have too many people going, "Sweet, HDR!" for them to stop doing what they're doing.

Yawn to those screens. I agree the light effect looks overdone.

Looks overdone to me.

But I just think the screens look too realistic in general. I've always prefered more cartoonish graphics. I play games to escape from the real world for a bit, not to just simulate it as closely as possible.

Isn't it called Bloom lighting? I know Oblivion gives you the choice between HDR and Bloom, and it certainly doesn't rear it's neck out as badly in HDR.

Could of just been me though.

Also, the bloomage is overdone, but man, those are some nice looking screenshots.

Where in the options for Oblivion does it give you the choice between HDR and light bloom?

Was referring to the PC version, it's on the config console that pops up before the game starts.

Just out of curiousity and in no way meant to be an attack - but do you have these sentences in a notepad file that you can cut and paste when needed? I think over the past two years I've seen you say this in almost the same exact wording. It's kind of freaky. Maybe you are really SmarterChild?

Nah, my opinion just doesn't change and the same threads come up over and over and over again. i.e. these photorealistic graphics threads at console launches.

Maybe I should make a list to cut and paste from. Would save some typing.

the new lighting is awesome, but there are some game makers that make it look ummm dee de deeee EA is one of them. PGR3 did great with the new lighting, so did GRAW. in a few years with more powerful hardware i'm sure things will get fixed so the lighting looks real real and not dee dee deeee real.

oh yeah

Dear The Bus,

Would you like some cheese with your wine?

Sincerely,

Light Bloom the dee deee dee of lighting effects

Considering that many games today are too dark...I'd say many of Gamers are just never happy.

I don't know if it's this bloom business, but there is a bit in Burnout 3 in the European circuit where the light off the road is so intense that you can't see the traffic. I'm all for the shiny nice graphics (realistic when they're called for), but I don't like when it gets in the way.

Though it could of been intentional in which case BOOOOO to the burnout offices.

Of course it's intentional. It's more true-to-life. If you were in that situation in real life, this effect would occur. Does it hinder your performance? Sure, of course.
