Of course everyone is going to say "their videogame arm is what's keeping them alive" but nothing could be farther from the truth. Their electronics arm has been revived, and their gaming arm is losing bocu dollars in preparation for the PS3. While I don't celebrate Sony's financial standing, I do celebrate having one less thing for Sony haters to bring up in a conversation about the PS3.

I'm no fan of Windows(I'm a mac guy) but I love my 360 It's quite different with Sony. Sony's been buoyed by their videogame business over the long term. It's an important part of their company. Lord knows where they would have been without it the past few years. |

Sony's problem is not in revenues, its in profits (down again) and management. Hopefully the recent and continued shake up will straighten them out. However their hopes of success are clearly on the Blu-ray medium. With continued reduction in DVD media (Sony bread and butter operation) they need something sooner then latter, and PSP discs has failed to fill the void.
Partnering with Samung on LCDs was the best move they could make recently, and they did it well. It is one of the rare instances of Sony actually working with other suppliers as opposed to against them. Lets hope the trend continues. |
Aren't Sony's Bravia TV's raking in the big bucks for them? I thought the Bravia line was the market leader but maybe I'm wrong.
To be truly successful Sony should rename their console Playstation Thrii It evokes so much more about the machine. (sorry I couldn't resist) |

PS3 Costing Sony Near $1 Billion Game division to take serious hit launching new machine. by Patrick Klepek, 04/27/2006 With Blu-ray players arriving this year priced at $1,000 -- a tag that would be considered absurd for a 'competitive' videogame machine -- many (including 1UP) have wondered what Sony would do to cut costs and avoid a massive financial fallout with PlayStation 3. As it turns out, it appears they're going to bite the bullet. Reuters reports Sony announced today in Japan they expect their game division to suffer a $877 million USD (the equivalent of $100 billion yen) loss due to start up costs associated with PS3 over the next year. Clearly the worldwide launch later this year must be playing a factor. How the company expects to recover, however, is unclear. Production costs on the CELL and Blu-ray technologies will obviously come down over the years, but Sony doesn't have much wiggle room in pricing PS3 if they want to remain competitive with Xbox 360, especially considering Microsoft may very likely institute a price drop around PS3's launch in November. Sony stock holders must be sweating bullets. |

I've not the huge fan of Sony's products I once was when most were made in Japan, but I still love their TVs and choose Sony TVs everytime.
The game division losses are a very worthwhile risk, because the payoff will be huge for them. With the Xbox360 failling in Japan they should be the market leader next generation as well. Blu-ray looks to be a fairly safe bet for long term success as well so Sony should be fine. I honestly don't know what they can do in the other areas though. I'm not sure the Walkman or Vaio name will ever matter again. |
Yeah, nearly my whole HT setup is Sony, but I'm not as much a fan of the newer stuff as well.
The TVs are great though, but pricey. If i were to buy a set now I'd probably go with a Samsung as I like the DLPs and the price is better. But you're right, Sony as a company is fine, and can afford to lose a billion on the PS3 as they'll make it up elsewhere and with games and blu-ray movies and licensing fees. |
My whole HT setup is Sony as well. :D2: Not on purpose mind you, the TV I got was easily the best quality in my price range and when I was looking for a receiver I just stumbled across a massively discounted bundle at Fry's that had a receiver, 5-disc changer, and full speaker setup for $300. I saw the receiver alone later (at Fry's) for $400!

So, if we know it's going to cost Sony a billion on PS3, as well as the cost of manufacturing one, and the expected manufacturing numbers, couldn't we make an educated guess at how much it will cost?

The thing is, if the PS3 and Blu-Ray fail, Sony as a company is in big, big trouble--even more than it already is. I don't think it could survive. Sony has certainly been in financial trouble, and those troubles were well-publicized. i have no home theater, just a pair of headphones lol. However, i just know sony isnt in some deep hole and unable to come out, they're a world class powerhouse in the electronics buisness, let alone the video gaming market, so they will use their success to ride in the BR to success.
of course, this is all IMO. But i think its safe to say that all 6 million ps3's (i severly doubt that many tho) for fiscal year 06 will be gone immediately even if it comes in at 649. People will buy it for gaming, for movies, and more. |
Koei will be showing Fatal Inertia and Bladestorm at E3 for the PS3. And so much for the "no playable demos at E3" rumor, because Insomniac has announced that Resistence (you may know it as I-8) will be playable at E3.

I s Sony is only losing 1 billion for the launch for the PS3, they are pretty well positioned. If they can make that equate to 4 million BR players in homes, they can make that up pretty darn quick. Naturally that depends a bit on the price of the PS3 to begin with . I don't think they can get 4 million out at a price of $799 but probably have a decen chance around $499.
What an awful situation for a company. You want as many out as you possibly can but recognize that they lower you price them, they more you will get out, but the lower you price them, the bigger your losses. Price too high and you may not sell enough to make it all back or dominate the market or make BR the big winner. I am very happy that my job does not include figuring out a price for the PS3. :lol: |

There's some major aliasing going on in those pics plus the textures on everything besides the ships look horrible. Hope it looks better in motion since they say the physics are ground breaking.
