Old Games That Are Still Impressive Graphically
I started thinking about this in the SNES vs. Genesis thread. What classic games, because of either the art style or just general graphics, still wow you to this day?
A couple for me are:
Star Fox - The 3D models may be primitive but this game still me blows me away with the atmosphere it creates.
Super Punch Out - HUGE characters and really smooth animation.
Zelda (SNES) - Just an all around great looking game, even today.

It's funny that you bring this up.. I just got my SNES back from my girlfriend and hooked it up to my 32" Wega via S-Video and although I've seen these games time and time again.. it just simply amazed me how damn good some of them looked being 10-15 years old. Sure, from playing a hellafied amount of 32-bit 2D games on the GBA, Playstation and Saturn some of the SNES stuff has some obvious flaws, but overall these games have stood the test of time VERY well.
Speaking of, I always hate reading reviews of 2D Playstation/Playstation 2 games and reading the term "SNES-like," seeing that most games labeled with this vile-term were had graphics that could never have been done on the SNES. I always figured if you were writing reviews of a major publication that you needed to be at least SLIGHTLY educated in the field. Shows what I know.
Joe took my nomination.. so I'd like to nominate the SNES remake of Dragon Quest III. Probably the best looking SNES game ever made and easily the best animated (at least the battles). It's a damn shame Enix chose to release practically EVERY one of their SNES games in America except for their flagship series.

Yoshi's Island was the first thing I thought of too. But I still think that the 2d Sonic games from the genesis are still magnificent (especially 3 and Sonic& Knuckles). The Mega Man X games are also still really pretty.
Speaking of the 16 bit days - What kills me is how the games did so much more with the music back then than todays games do. Maybe because they needed to be more judicious with what was included or because todays game soundtracks are closer to movie scores or just use licensed music, but no tune from this era of games has got under my skin like some of the songs from the 16 bit days (I still hum the toon from Starlight Zone from Sonic 1).

That Mickey Mouse game for Genesis was awesome back in the day and I'll bet it still holds up today.
