My top 10 w/ an occasional comment
1. Soul Calibur II (DC)
I love fighting games and this is the finest one to date

2. Super Mario 3 (NES)
3. Metal Slug 3 (Neo Geo)
4. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
5. Unreal Tournament(PC)
6. Final Fantasy (NES)
My favorite of the series (yes, I even liked it more then VII)

7. Radiant Silvergun (Saturn)
Best damn shooter ever.

8. Galaga (Arcade)
9. Animal Crossing (GCN)
I never spent more time playing a console game then this one. And I still don't understand why I was hooked for so long.

10. Diablo II(PC)

I absolutely disagree. SMB3 can not be compared or equated to Mario 64, or even SMW imo. I think anyone who has taken the cheap way out just picking a series (yes including sports games, but also I noticed a BG1/BG2 vote - cmon the sequel is obviously the better game :p), should have their entire vote discounted until they choose to come back and rectify it so it refers to an individual game in the series.

The only time I think votes should be combined is for some cross platform games, eg. if 1 person votes for RE4 (GC) and another votes for RE4 (PS2), those votes should probably be combined.

fumanstan 11-29-05 06:00 PM

I think long running sports series can be combined, especially when it comes to the bigger games like the 2K games, Madden, NBA Live, etc. It's far different from sequels to games that are drastically different.

I agree. I also added Diablo as a series or I would have 3 spaces for Diablo alone, or maybe just 2 as LoD could be considered Diablo 2.1.

Chris_D 11-29-05 06:18 PM

I don't know, theres a big different been EA Hockey on the Genesis from 1989 (which I used to love) and whatever the latest interation is on the ps2. The complexity of modern sports games just doesn't interest me.

And yes, Diablo 1 and 2 should definitely be separate entries. 2 improved on 1 in a number of ways and is certainly a vastly larger game. Expansions should be included as the game they were for, so you would only include Diablo 2, not Diablo 2: LoD.

SteelgearX 11-29-05 06:24 PM

99% of the time I don't re-play games, I usually beat them and move on to the next game (I play a LOT of games). These are the ones I've either re-played multiple times or in the case of the last 3 (SC:CT, CS, and UT), games I've spent hundreds of hours playing online.

1. Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
Play it on nearly a yearly basis or every time a sequel comes out.

2. Super Metroid (SNES)
A 2d masterpiece, Castlevania:SotN owes a lot to this game.

3. A Link to the Past (SNES)
Ocarina of Time was superb, but somehow I enjoyed this more.

4. Soul Calibur (DC)
I love fighting games and my friend and I spent countless hours battling each other.

5. Resident Evil 4 (GC)
This was just a great game from start to finish, always putting you in crazy situations. Also, some of the coolest boss fights in recent memory.

6. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)
Instant classic, this is probably the best in the series. The final act was jaw dropping, the ending made my wife cry and made me come pretty close.

7. Grandia (PS1)
I like RPG's, I hate the fighting system in most them. Grandia's fights are interactive and actually have some strategy to them. I clocked in at 64 hours by games end, and that's an accomplishment for me (I don't normally like very long games). A twist at the end also got me all emotional.

8. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (Xbox Live)
The learning curve is steep as hell, but there's a certain satisfaction in fooling your adversaries into thinking you're all the way across the map while you hack away. As a merc, laying a well placed trap for the spies and watching them blow up is maniacally fun.

9. Counter-Strike (PC)
I wasted about 4-5 years playing this online. Very addictive, especially with the great community over at CAIN's.

10. Unreal Tournament (PC)
This game was awesome when it came out, lots of fun.

LoD was an expansion and only added 2 levels and 2 characters. Most newer games do this in patches now, so I would count it as the same. I guess I should change my list to show both Diablos.

Maxflier 11-29-05 07:47 PM

This is actually rediculously hard, since aside from the top few games i have a hard time differentiating how much better one is than the other but here goes:

1. Grand Theft Auto III (PS2)
2. Street Fighter II (Arcade)
3. Tomb Raider (PS)
4. Anarchy Online (PC)
5. Shenmue (Dreamcast)
6. Gran Turismo 3 (PS2)
7. Gallop Racer 2004 (PS2)
7. Tecmp Super Bowl (NES)
8. Ico (PS2)
9. Fire Pro Wrestling S:Six Man Scramble (Saturn)
10. Baseball Stars (NES)

True, but then by specifying a particular year would also make it nearly impossible to place many sports titles on this type of list. It was different when you had a couple iterations on a console, like Tecmo Bowl -> Tecmo Super Bowl, but for myself, i've spent more time playing the last 3 years of Madden (04 - 06) then any other game and love the series and wouldn't want to narrow it down.

I suppose it doesn't matter too much though, since other then a few games that standalone (PunchOut, Tecmo Bowl) we probably wouldn't see these titles in the top 50 anyway :)

Considering the amount of "honerable mentions" and games we're forced to leave off, would it make sense to throw out maybe 3 additional titles, each worth an additional point? Everytime I see someone else's list I want to add a title :p

Maybe I'm forgetting the LoD experience, but I haven't seen many (or any) patches that offer as much content as LoD did.

I can see allowing expansions, but series are a no-no. If we allow a series such as Diablo, then someone may want to include Metroid, then we get into situations such as is it the 2-D, or Primes included? It's just messier that way.

I am still narrowing my list, but will post it soon.

Chris_D 11-29-05 10:05 PM

Updated my list with comments.. still hurting over some of the stuff left out.. ouch :)

OK, that sounds reasonable enough :D

Anyway, here's my list of personal favorites. I never had an NES so you Nintendo fans can suck it.

10. Civilization 2 (PC)
9. Pitfall (Atari 2600)
8. Vs. Super Mario Bros. (Arcade)
7. R-Type (Arcade)
6. Montezuma's Revenge (Apple II)
5. Choplifter (Sega Master System, Apple II, Arcade)
4. Ms. Pacman (Arcade)
3. Wasteland (PC) - The longest game I've ever bothered to finish, and went back to do it again as many different ways as I could. I still keep in on my PC.
2. Galaga (Arcade)
1. Worms Armageddon (PC) - I have played this one fairly regularly ever since it came out.

As you can see, I'm not much into current games

Well, I have to admit that I'm a hardcore Sega fanboy and its because of games like JGR that I am. *seeeee-gaaah*

This is one of my pet games. I remember thinking that this - stylish, great music, hybrid gameplay, balance of freedom w/goals - was what I wanted gaming to be like. It was "next gen" in the best possible way: an experience that I couldn't have before, both for technical and artistic reasons. JGR still feels fresh to me today.

This thread deserves a bump for anyone who hasn't posted their 10 yet. Also here are the comments I added the other day.

2) Warcraft 2 (PC) - simple to play, yet extremely deep. I spent uncountable hours playing this online via kali, way before battle.net. Only flaws would be the human side rarely got a look in from the best players, and the single player mode wasn't terribly exciting (bad ai). Still, a far better game imo than 3 (apart from the mod aspect).

3) Suikoden 2 (PS1) - amazing 2d graphics, great soundtrack, enthralling but not esoteric story of 2 childhood friends. I never did get into the turnbased / random battles in most console rpgs, but at least in this game they are almost entirely painless.

4) Halo (Xbox) - 2 is probably a better game, but it stands among many other great games around these days. When the first Halo came out, it truely seemed ahead of it's time. One thing that stands out is that Halo got vehicles right first time while in other games they can still seem like an after thought.

5) Silent Hill 2 (PS2) - SH3 is a more finely honed and better looking game, but 2 has an intriguing and original story, genuine atmosphere, and one of the creepiest 'bad' guys ever in a video game.

6) Streets of Rage 2 (Gen) - The best scrolling fighter ever made. I still remember how jealous snes owners were when all they had was a crappy port of final fight that couldn't even handle more than single player. Although frankly, SOR2 (and 3) are far better games than even the arcade version of FF. Very challenging with unlockable mania difficulty and each of the characters was genuinely different (Guy and Cody anyone?).

7) Mario Kart 64 (N64) - So many hours spent playing this in four player mode, along with many more defeating each of the fiendish unlockable ghosts. Most of my friends were pros at this so there was always fierce competition to be had. If not for the ugly slowdown at times it would have been perfect. For some reason, double dash failed to recapture the magic of this great game.

8) Tie Fighter (PC)
Never liked the wing commander series, but the space combat in the xwing/tie fighter games felt just right. The first time you take out a star destroyer with an xwing is just too cool. Tie Fighter made just the right number of improvements to the first game without damaging the core addictive gameplay.

9) Star Control 2 (PC)
I loved the feeling of freedom and that you were exploring a vast universe. Even just mining random planets is fun. It's almost a shame that there is a fixed period to complete the game by. Also of note, the funky mod music, and cool alien designs. Just to top it off, the melee version of the game was endlessly addictive and challenging, even against AI.

10) Ultima 7 - Black Gate (PC)
The best ultima ever, although 4 is a definite contender. Amazing graphics and highly complex interactive interface, along with a vast and varied world to explore. Even the pseudo followup, Serpent Isle, was pretty good. Just a pity these games are nigh on impossible to play these days, due to the way it uses it's own memory manager.

Hey Chris_D, you can play Ultima VII (both parts, including expansion packs) easier than ever before. You have to have the actual files, but this is an open-source program that uses the resources to recreate the game from top to bottom. Meaning it runs natively in Windows XP and you can have any resolution you like.

Also of note: The Ur-Quan Masters, a Star Control II project in the same vein, except you don't have to own the game (the 3DO source was released to the fan community by Toys for Bob, the developer).

This kind of stuff is what makes the Internet so great.

A few months ago, I was trying to play Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers and having a pretty unsuccessful time of it. I did a Google search for "Gabriel Knight Windows XP" and up pops this site that has an easy to install program that fixes all known problems for GK1 & 2. 10 years ago, you'd just be screwed if you couldn't figure it out for yourself.

I may have to give Ultima 7 another go...

Jeremy517 12-04-05 09:02 PM

I don't know if this is really my order or not, but for the sake of this thread, it is. Its too hard to compare games in different genres, and to compare games that I played through dozens of times as a kid vs games that I've acquired recently and only played through a few times.
