Microsoft to update Xbox 360 CPU with 65nm tech

Paul Loughrey 15:40 21/04/2006

Signs new deal with Chartered Semiconductor; first systems due in early '07

Microsoft is set to move the manufacturing of the Xbox 360's CPUs to a more advanced 65 nanometre process, and has signed a new agreement with Singapore-based Chartered Semiconductor to build the chips using its advanced Silicon-On-Insulator technology.

Chartered Semiconductor is currently manufacturing the CPU using 90nm SOI processes, and the upgrade in technology to 65nm will potentially reduce both heat and power consumption, as well as lowering manufacturing costs for Microsoft's next-generation console. The first consoles incorporating the new CPUs are set to appear in the first quarter of 2007.

Kay Chai Ang, SVP of fab operations at Chartered, commented: "We are excited to expand our manufacturing relationship with Microsoft and leverage the innovative 65nm SOI technology made available to us through our agreement with IBM. By working closely with IBM to enable manufacturing compatibility and dual-sourcing capability, our goal is to continue to be a reliable manufacturing source to Microsoft."

"We look forward to working with Chartered on the production of such an important component of our Xbox 360 system," added Larry Yang, GM of Xbox console development at Microsoft. "We plan to continue with our strategy of dual sourcing from Chartered and IBM's fabs, which are operationally aligned and compatible, to give us the consistent product quality and flexibility we will need."

The move marks another step in Microsoft's concerted efforts to increase its production capacity for the Xbox 360, the company recently doubling Xbox 360 chip orders from several Taiwanese manufacturing partners, with Zhongshan-based Winstron Corp announcing an expansion of its manufacturing facility to meet the demand for 1m Xbox 360 consoles per month.

Wasn't the point of buying the 360 so we wouldn't have to upgrade our systems. So does this mean in 2 years from now there will be a sticker on games saying if you want to get the full frame rates and no loading time you must own a 2nd generation 360 with the more advanced cpu.

I think this is to help with production and other issues like manufacturing rather than enhancing the core performance.

Performance will be the same. Every recent console has gone through similar changes over the course of its lifetime.

Yep. I think it just means they will either:

1. make more money per console sold
2. lose less money per console sold

which would:
3. allow for a price drop sooner to put a thorn in Sony's side

I'll believe an HD-DVD add-on for $100 when it is in stores and I have seen reviews saying it works. I mean, controllers are almost $50. I would be SHOCKED at that price.

Can anyone tell me a good place to get European Xbox 360 sales numbers? I'm keeping a chart for sales and have yet to find a source (in order to compute worldwide sales).

MEDIA ALERT - In her ever-evolving battle against the evil dataDyne Corporation, Joanna Dark’s mission is far from over. Microsoft Game Studios and Rare today announced that a free playable demo and new downloadable content for “Perfect Dark Zero” will be available via Xbox Live Marketplace, providing new challenges for existing gamers and an opportunity for new fans to join the fight against dataDyne.
...
Included in the free auto-updates are eight new bot personalities, making these artificially intelligent enemies even more treacherous. Some of the new bots even get personal: judge bots instinctively attack the player with the most kills, while bully bots attack the player with the least. Venge bots are constantly out for blood, targeting the last person that killed them. The infamous DarkOps Bots are being added, as well, and will be available in all multiplayer scenarios.

So the Demo and some new bots with personality are coming soon (or are already there).

Bomberman Act: Zero to be First Xbox 360 Budget Title
Posted by CheapyD

A quick check of some major Japanese online retailers reveals that Bomberman Act: Zero for the Xbox 360 has a bargain basement price of around ¥2,800 ($25 US), making it the first real budget title for the 360. So far, only a Japan version has been announced, but we can still hope that the game and its CAG friendly price will see a worldwide release (unless it sucks).

According to the product descriptions, Bomberman Act: Zero will be released in Japan on May 25th, has up to 8 player Xbox Live support and an optional first person viewpoint.

Please bring it to the U.S., please bring it to the U.S.

no pics - just use Adam's link

IGN's link - I can't see screenshots (filters at work) so I can't verify any on the page.

They just say "Image not available", which is strange since so many other sites have screenshots.

I'm trying to book some time with Hudson to view Bomberman as well as Dungeon Explorer for the 360 and thier Revolution title. I'll let you guys know how Bomberman plays if I get a chance.

Uno with camera support looks pretty cool.

I'm betting that Texas Hold'em and the rest of the downloads will happen in conjunction with E3 2006 & the free week of Live.
