I can safely say that I will never quit mid race on anyone. I absolutely suck ass at this game right now as I've only raced like 3 times, but i still believe in finishing what you start.

So if you want to boost your stats, come find me :)

I played for about two hours tonight. I had at least three races that made it all the way through, and I had a blast. I never was able to connect with any of the other DVDTalkers, however.

I've added everyone that's posted their friend ID to my list, so hopefully we are racing in the near future.

Has anyone figured out how the track selection works? I always hit random, and usually there are four different tracks picked, and the system picks one from the list.

sdcrym 11-19-05 09:57 PM

According to the manual, the track is chosen by whichever gets the most votes, or, in the event of a tie, is chosen at random. It's probably the easiest way to do it adequately fair, but it's not perfect.

golucky, I've had some personal stuff come up, so I won't be able to get to that thread like I promised. You seem to be keeping up well with the codes in this thread, though. If there's not a general wifi code thread by the time Animal Crossing comes out, hopefully I'll be in a position to where I can put it together.

goLUCKY 11-20-05 03:07 PM

I know this is simply an awesome game, becuase I've run the batteries completely down three times since I got it. I've even played while plugged into the wall.... I guess I'm addicted.

Outlaw 11-20-05 06:49 PM

I picked this up today. It really is a great mix of all the Mario Karts combined into one package, complete with online play. So far my neighbors "hotspots" don't seem to like my DS connecting to them so I'm just going to get my own. Well I am buying a wireless router tomorrow (been putting it off forever), so maybe I'll post my friend code soon :).

Joe Molotov 11-20-05 07:05 PM

7 times out of 8. That's how many times the game chose against me on the level selection in 1-on-1 matches. The one time it picked my level was the one time I picked Random out of frustration. I just wanted to play Rainbow Road. :(

vd0man 11-20-05 08:44 PM

Well me and huh? are trying to play online now and it keeps disconnecting. It keeps telling me my opponent disconnected, but I don't think he is, I thinks it's Nintendo's servers messing up. Hopefully he'll post here and we can get both sides of this and figure out what's going on.

slop101 11-20-05 10:09 PM

ARGH!!! I can't seem to get the wifi to connect through my wireless - it's recognizing the signal and I got the WEP code in there and everything, but I keep getting a useless error code. And the wifi website is no help...

I think the same thing was just happening to us. I was trying to get a quick game in before heading to bed. We'll have to try again sometime.

I think it may have been a problem on my end. I mentioned earlier in this thread I was using a WiFi card with some GigaByte softAP software, which automatically installs it's own drivers on your system. I noticed I was getting a small percentage of errors on the wifi stats page but it was such a small number (and didn't seem to effect gameplay) I figured it was just normal wifi behavior, since I've never used a wifi network before. After our game dropping out tonight I tried manually un-installing the GigaByte drivers and re-installing the original manufacturer's drivers for my card and viola...no more errors. Hopefully that was the problem and now it's fixed.

huh? 11-21-05 05:44 AM

It kept telling me my opponent was disconnecting. Weird.

It kept telling me my opponent was disconnecting. And when it dropped me back I was still connected to the network and could immediately start a new game. Really weird.

Same here. I was able to play regional and worldwide games until my battery ran out (3rd time i've done that... DOH)

WOW, I managed to play a 4-player game where nobody dropped earlier today!

vd0man 11-22-05 09:27 PM

Just a small update: all my Wifi problems have been solved. The culprit: Vonage (VoIP telephone). It kept crashing so I took it completely out of my network and now every thing's great. Played for several hours online without any dropouts. People were actually decent last night too and didn't quit mid-race or anything. Until I can figure out a better solution I'm just going to have to take my phone offline whenever I want to play. Anybody else here have Vonage? I'm curious if anybody else had problems or might know of a solution.

rfduncan 11-23-05 06:19 AM

I can get on and get racing but I only get through 2-3 races before my DS locks up and says I'd been disconnected. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Yeah, this happened to me once. It was a 3-way tie going into the final race. Can't expect that to ever happen again though.

huh? 11-23-05 07:00 AM

My online experience has gotten better as well. played about 4 games in a row with at least 3 people in them with no dropouts.

goLUCKY 11-23-05 01:09 PM

Over the holidays, we should try to get a tournemant going! Like Thursday @10pm or something. What do you guys think?

Ralph Wiggum 11-23-05 03:40 PM

I'm game. Hell, even general window of time to meet up online for drop-free racing would be fun.

Outlaw 11-23-05 07:27 PM

I'm game too I think. I haven't gone online with Mario Kart yet so that'll be the first time. I was busy designing my emblem.

I believe this game will be $28 at BB on 11/25/05 during that black friday sale thing.

vd0man 11-26-05 10:59 PM

Well I've got somewhat good news about players who drop out of a race. It does count against them, but only if at least two of the remaining players finish the rest of the 4 race set. The only thing that matters is the final point totals at the end of the set. You get one WINS point for each player you beat and one LOSSES point for each player who beat you, so a 4 player race scores like this:

1st place = 3 WINS, 0 LOSSES
2nd place = 2 WINS, 1 LOSSES
3rd place = 1 WINS, 2 LOSSES
4th place = 0 WINS, 3 LOSSES

So if someone drops out, the best thing you can do is finish the set so the guy gets his 3 LOSSES. If the set isn't finished nobody gets any points, so in 2 player races you're still vulnerable to jerks dropping out.

darkside 11-27-05 12:00 AM

I haven't had too many people dropping out lately and have finished the last few with at least three people still in. My problem is still finding friends at the same time they are looking. Its been very rare to matchup with anyone besides calling them and setting it up exactly at the right time and even then it hasn't always worked. Random racing is also getting old because they keep matching me up with all these people with 50-100 more wins than me so I get slaughtered. People have apparently figured out that drifting is the key and will do that until it gets nauseating. I have seen bit of two people working together to drift each other into a huge lead so they always get at least second place and lots of people staying behind you almost the whole race so they can take you out at the end. That one sucks when there are only two of you racing.

Nintendo has really done nothing at all to live up to the promise of better online gaming. Mario Kart is neat and its free to play online, but they haven't eliminated any of the promised frustrating things that Xbox Live suffers from and in many ways I'm finding it worse.

I have gotten pretty far on the single player and am currently finishing the mirror tracks. I still think Mario Kart is a good game, but man it got old in a hurry. I played Mario Kart 64 for months without getting tired of it (that and GoldenEye on the 64 are still my idea of what multiplayer gaming should be) and this one got old in a matter of days. I'm ready to trade it in and move on to the online game I really want to play, Animal Crossing.

AllHallowsEve 11-27-05 12:27 AM

I finished this game. The first one I have finished since Castlevania DS. Actually the funny thing is that those two DS games are the only ones I have taken the time to beat in ages. It didnt take me long at all to get through this game.

Since many of the levels are from past Maro kart games, I already knew how to get threw them natually. Hard to explain. But, it all came back to me when I saw them again.

I just have a question? I unlocked R.O.B. the Robot. Where is he from? I dont remember him.

But, I agree. I will be trading this one in for Mario & Luigi DS this week.

I've been playing locally more than anything. just had a 7 player match with my friends and it was awesome! In the single player I have so far just beat the 50cc cups, all except the last 2 retro cups, so I still have a ways to go (haven't touched the missions yet). Tried a little bit of online, first few matches were good, tried one later and the guy disconnected midway. Did another just before hopping on here and won! The person had a pretty good win ratio too so that was pretty cool.

Anyway my friend code is:

244873
120167

Maybe someone can add me to the list. :)

If it's not drifting, it's snaking. I swear I've seen people taking dives off the course only to be put back on the course way ahead of me, too.

The game is simply not designed or balanced for its crippled online implementation: too many good courses are gone, too many others are flat-out boring with four or fewer racers (Rainbow Road), the inability to drag items makes drifting too easy as well as destroys the item balance. MK also blows from a basic useability standpoint since you can't block idiots or have any control over matchups.

If you're using local Wi-Fi multiplayer, it's easily the best Mario Kart to date and one of the best games this year. If not, there's plenty of better options on the DS.

For those of us that bugged our parents enough in 1986 we were able to get the NES bundle that came with R.O.B. the robot. Basically Nintendo was worried about people buying another video game system after the crash so they tried to market the system as being more than a game system. That is why it was called the Nintendo Entertainment System and why they originally bundled it with a silly robot that only worked with two games.

R.O.B. still sits on my computer desk today and I did play a bit of gyromite with with him in 1986, but I don't think I've used him since. Of course the NES caught on and Nintendo stopped pretending it was something other than a video game system so R.O.B. was dropped pretty early on.

Basically R.O.B. could pick up things up and they designed two games to use that feature. It really wasn't much fun at all.

Phineas444 11-27-05 03:43 PM

I had Gyromite and it wasn't a bad game. Rob though took FOREVER to open the gates since he was so slow. Mine met an early demise and had his head taken off...

Eric D. 11-27-05 05:03 PM

Man! People keep on dropping out like crazy! It's so annoying. It has gotten to the point where I just can't enjoy the game anymore if I'm winning. I have to play head games with people. I purposley slow myself down the first two races to keep it even and then I let someone else win the third race. For the forth race I keep it dead even until the last couple of seconds where I take the lead again and win. I really hope nintendo finds a way to fix this becase then this game would be perfect imo.

vd0man 11-29-05 11:00 AM

I think we should come up with a system for meeting up online. When you try and start a Friends game it flashes an icon on the screen of anyone in your friends list if they're online. It's a blue square that appears just above the wireless signal strength indicator in the bottom right of the top screen. Here's what I propose:

Whenever you first get online to play, you first try and start a Friends game for at least 2-3 minutes. If you don't get any connections, just go and play a game with random opponents like usual, but keep an eye out for a response Friends icon.

If you're playing online and you see the Friends icon appear, finish your game (don't drop out) then start a friends search to signal the other player you're ready. Then he'll finish his game and start a Friends game to join you.

Sound good to everybody?

Once you make your icon on that website, how do you get it to the DS?
