I took some shrapnel today, a kid canceled his pre-order for the game, brought back the demo, and bought Jade Empire. I remember when he did pre-order the game he was excited to get an RPG, and having to share a PS2 with his brother he doesnt get to play a lot. It didnt make sense to me that he loves RPGs but bought an XB. So Im sad to say thats one less pre-order and now I have to work harder to get another. Hopefully the next person I sell on this game wont be so picky. But to pick Jade Empire over DQ 8?

Good news!

Except that means I'm going to have to finish the game I'm playing right now a week earlier than I was expecting .

How story-driven are the DQ games?

I play RPG's mainly for the characters, plot, and music. If DQ is weak in these areas, I think I will pass.

To give you an idea of the kind of RPG's I like, here are my favorites:

FF4
FF6
FF7
Xenogears
Xenosaga
Suikoden II
Chrono Cross

So do you think I would enjoy Dragon Quest?

Pixy have you ever posted pictures of your game collection? I imagine your setup/collection is insane.

Just got my demo yesterday, off to play the game now. Hope it lives up to you alls' praises. I am DQ virgin (and not a heavy rpg-er) so, yeah.

I doubt it. Dragon Quest is (and hopefully always will be) very gameplay-centric.

Eh, I've got a lot of crap but the people at Digital Press put me to shame.

One thing that cracks me up is seeing those "Room of Doom" pictures where they have literally thousands of games for every system known to man and gaming toys and junk of all kinds lining every corner of space.. and the centerpiece of this gaming euphoria.. a 19 inch TV.

All the money they spend on the games prevents them from upgrading.

Okay, new page.. let's talk about DRAGON QUEST VIII now!

Has everybody enjoyed their demos? I admit that I never played through the story mode of the demo but I did spend a good few hours checking out battle mode and I'm excited. I'm most happy that it appears the clunky job-system of VI and VII was removed for a more manageable skill system.

I think it's great that the world map is fully explorable. Too many rpgs
nowadays, FFs, Grandia 3, Shadow Hearts: From The New World focus
on the stay on the set path routine. I just hope that the rumors I've
heard of it not having too much aside from random battles doesn't hold
true. The demo had chests, hopefully there are lots of sidequests to
be found as well.

It would be nice to play a non-linear RPG for a change.

I liked it. I only had about an hour to play it, spent in the city and some battles. I'm happy at this point. I don't have time to invest in an RPG I can't save on, so I'm just waiting for the full version at this point.

Hopefully DQ8 makes up for the horrible disappointment that Lunar DS was

Wow a 9.0 from Gamespot! Greg Kasavin must not have reviewed the game.

Saw a commercial last night.. I'm guessing it's the first DW/DQ commercial we've got in the US. Sadly, it showed nothing from the game. I guess we're supposed to buy the game just because four million people in Japan did, who cares what the game looks like or is about. Are American gamers really that stupid? (my question quickly was answered as I saw a commercial for a 50 Cent game and another Matrix game). Like the Xbox 360 commercials, we're told to buy it because everyone else is.. disgusting.

I notice the trend also to do comercials that don't show game play. Why would I buy a game just because someone made a pretty animation for it or some actors do something funny. A few scenes with game play would be nice.
