big time disappointments name some

Looked forward to Nascar 2006 and man am I dissapointed the only other time I have been this let down by a game was when I bought Tecmo Bowl for consoles other than Nintendo. Please share some of your disapoints with me

Fable would have to be one of the biggest considering how overhyped that game was. The reality was something quite different. I've been told that if you forget all the hype that there is a mildly enjoyable game there somewhere but I haven't been able to find it yet.

Joe Molotov 08-31-05 09:23 PM

There are really only two times that I can remember being disapointed by games that were highly-anticipated by me. One was Final Fantasy VIII, the other was Fable. Neither game was entirely bad, but neither game lived up to my expectations either.

With FF8, I think what most put me off was the magic system and the upgrade system. Having to draw spells out of enemies (especially basic spells like Cure) was a drag, and I also disliked having to find screws and bolts just to upgrade your weapons, as opposed to just buying new ones in other games.

With Fable, it just simply failed to deliver on the things that had gotten me excited about the game in the first place. They made it sound like it was going to be this huge virtual world, and that you would basically live out your characters entire life. I remember them saying things like you could kill a kid's parents and then he might grow up and try to get revenge on you, or how grass would grow and trees would die and on and on. I realize now it was all BS, but at the time I got sucked into thinking that it was really going to be The Big One™. Instead, it failed to live up to even the precedent that had already been set by Knights of the Old Republic, and instead mainly turned out to be a moderately entertaining hack and slash game with some interesting gimmicks.

XIII. I was so looking forward to the concept of a cell shaded FPS, but once I actually got a chance to play the game I was sorely disappointed. Even if it was just an average FPS I would've enjoyed it more than normal just for the cell shading, but I felt it was a very, very mediocre FPS.

Greatest disappointment ever would have to be Devil May Cry 2. I was so unbelievably excited for the game, and on release day I played through it, and I kept trying to convince myself it wasn't that bad, but I finally accepted the craptastic nature of the game. DMC 3 made up for it though.

There have been a lot of threads like this...but what the hell...

The worst disappointment i've played this generation was definitely the Halo series. It was the same level, over and over again...

Hey kids! It's time for Captain Obvious!

Final Fantasy VII. The graphics were horrible. The music was less than stellar. The characters were obnoxious. The story was convoluted. The gameplay had been castrated to cater to morons. And let's not forget about the horribly lame plot-device: Aerith. Barf. After spending my Jr. High and High School years playing and replaying and obsessing over Final Fantasy II & III this game was a kick to the nuts in every imaginable way. The blow was worse off due to the insane amount of raw anticipation I had built up to the game's release due to my love for the previous two games. I still remember waiting in line at the game store before they had opened the day it came out. My excitement for the game over the next copue of days was mostly what I had built up and was drained quickly. A few days after getting it I knew something wasn't right.. something was missing.. and I dropped the game entirely. It wasn't until a few months later that I was able to come to terms that the game wasn't Final Fantasy II or III and restarted it and enjoyed it for what it was.. but the scar that left on my will be eternal.

So I never played FF7 at all, just watched two buddies each put in like 100+ hours. Then one night in a drunken stupor, I logged on as them and beat Red Weapon on both of their accounts - something neither of them had been able to do. Apparently, I had mentally developed the perfect 'strategery'. It was high-larious how pissed off they were.

Most disappointed by Campaign Play (way too short) for Halo 2 and by nerfing of pistol.

If you didn't know Pixy felt this way, well Welcome To The Forum!
We've had this tet a' tet for years now. I think FF VII was amazing and I respect his opinion as much as I disagree with it.

For me : Resident Evil 2. One of the few times I've ever payed full price for a game. The reviews were stellar, but I just hated it. People don't move like tanks, so why control like one, especially in an action game. I played it for a few days and then just gave up, it was no fun at all. I still regret picking that one up at all. It'll take a lot of convincing to talk me into getting RE 4 when it comes out for the PS2 (though I hear they finally fixed the controls).

That's my personal choice. Overall for the general population, can't get more disappointing than Rockstar's State Of Emergency. That came out in the aftermath of GTA 3 and everyone thought it would be in the same category, but it turned out to be a huge Turd. Also Stuntman was just horrible and so unpleasant to play.

Pirates of the Carribean
The great gameplay that could of been. They forced the developers to release the thing in time for the movie and ruined it. This game got screwed up so bad when I tried to play it. A real shame.

Halo
Same levels over and over. Repetative and unsatisfactory weapons. Average game over all. Way over hyped.

Fable
WAY over hyped. Some interesting elements but probably unfinished in a lot of respects.

DJ_Longfellow 09-01-05 11:55 AM

- State of Emergency
- Black Hawk Down (I had someone hopeful outlook...nope)

I cannot think....I'm sure there are more I bought and was like WTF

fujishig 09-01-05 12:17 PM

Not to spark another debate, but FFVII was certainly better than previous versions in terms of graphics... and I love the old games, but especially the oldest FFs are pretty basic stuff (not sure if by FF2 and 3 you mean the Japanese or American versions). Sure they were innovative for their time, but playing through Crystal Chronicles on the GBA made me remember how simple they were... I do hate that modern RPGs now are so graphic-intensive that battles start to become a chore, especially FFVIII and those long, non skippable summons.

Anyway...

While it didn't have a ton of hype, I was looking forward to Auto Modellista with it's beautiful cell-shaded graphics, but that game was utter crap. I mean, usually I can get some enjoyment out of even the worst games, but ugh.

Fable was another one: I was home sick for a couple days and pretty much finished the game. I know there are a lot of other things to do, but I didn't exactly play it straight through... I razed a few towns, etc.

The first Madden on the PS2 disappointed, if only by comparison to the dreamcast NFL 2K series. Ditto for NBA Live moving to PS2

Other than that, reviews tend to tell me if a highly-anticipated game has major flaws.

More:
Doom 3 (Multiplayer on XBOX LIVE...just the multiplayer, single was good)

But weren't the cutscenes beautiful...

The biggest dissapointment for me was Star Wars Galaxies, I am not even a big Star Wars fan, but I couldn't wait for this. It was supposed to be the next big MMORPG, but when it was released it was unfinished and buggy with very little content. The combat was boring with very little variety (not to mention all the broken or not working stuff) and it really didn't feel like a Star WARS game. With professions like dancer and entertainer that you were forced to interact with, it felt like the Sims. That game left a bitter taste for licensed games, especially licensed Star Wars games.

POP Warrior Within: I really liked the first but I just found the change in the prince's attitude for the second game annoying.

BeanDip0001 09-01-05 02:13 PM

battlefield for the xbox (so far the demo looks like CRAP)

fujishig 09-01-05 02:52 PM

Forgot to mention nearly every wrestling game released in the US since the N64, ESPECIALLY the Xbox and Gamecube franchises. I don't think I've ever seen a "sports" franchise go south like that from one generation to the next.

remjim 09-01-05 03:06 PM

It's one of the obvious for me: MGS2.

I LOVE the first (and third) MGS and waited with high anticpation for part 2. Man, was I let down.

Fable was somewhat of a letdown but I still enjoyed it. It did feel unfinished, especially towards the end.

X-Mewn Legends was also a disappointment. While tons of people found it enjoyable, I just found it boring and monotonous.

One more: Super Mario World. It was good but after the (James Lipton voice) sheer genius of part three, I was really let down by part 4. I'll take a racoon tail over a cape any day :).
