I will concede that Super Mario 3 was amazing, and I still hold in higher regard than World, but World was good in it's own right.

That does remind me, though, that people were pretty disappointed in Super Mario Sunshine (because they compared it to 64) and the GC Mario Kart (compared to the N64 version). In fact, now that I think about it, there were those that didn't like Zelda Wind Waker either, preferring the N64 ones. And no contest, Starfox has stunk since N64. Hmm...

The 2 Arc the Lad games for PS2. I LOVED the 1st three games, part 4 was disappointing but playable, but the latest one is horribly bad.

Giantrobo 09-01-05 04:14 PM

Knights of the Old Republic II..... The first game sucked at 1st but then i gave it another shot later and I loved it. KOTOR II just feels tedious and boring. I still haven't finished it. It doesn't make me want to play it like the KOTOT I.

Kingdom Under Fire... It's alright but not as cool as I was lead to believe. Perhpas teh sequel will be better.

Rainbow 6:Black Arrow....For an Average gamer like me this game is kinda of pain. I can't get very far and so it becomes frustrating.

Chris_D 09-01-05 07:26 PM

Ah yeah.. I guess Doubledash was ooook, but somehow the magic and raw playability from mariokart 64 was left behind. The gimmick 2 players per kart mode did absolutely nothing for me.

KOTOR2, kind of sad, as the game had potential to surpass KOTOR1 and the characters certainly seemed more interesting and better fleshed out (at least at first). But the game just collapsed under the weight of the countless bugs and bizarre cut back ending.

Zelda: WW, well never actually played it but wasn't able to get over the change in visual direction.

Final Fantasy 9: what a piece of crap. I agree that FF7, and FF8 had severe gameplay issues, but I loved them anyway, the characters, the settings, the soundtrack, the prerendered cut scenes! FF9 I couldn't care less about any of the characters and I can't remember a single bit of the plot today. No idea how I managed to finish it really. At least they got back on track somewhat with FFX.

Suikoden 4: Bad reviews, but its suikoden so it must be good right? Nooooooo.....

Superboy 09-01-05 07:27 PM

Metal Gear Solid was a HUGE disappointment for me. Ironically, I felt 2 was much better.

The backtracking, the limited areas, and that some weapons/items are only good for one go really rubbed me the wrong way. Part 2 had much more variety.

Here's another vote for FFVII. Not that the game was bad, it was a good game but after playing the masterpiece that was FFVI it was a huge let down for me. Yes, the 3D graphics and CG cut scenes looked cool and all but the game didn't have that same magic its predecessors had...not talking about the "magic" system either. :p To me its sad that a majority of gamers and the media consider FFVII to be the "best" game in the series and one of the best RPG's of all time. Not even close.

lawyer goodwill 09-01-05 11:52 PM

Probably very much in the minority on this one, but Metroid Prime on the Gamecube just didn't do it for me. I had high hopes for MP since I had loved the original trilogy of games (NES, GB and SNES versions), and it appeared that the designers were very faithful to the universe. I imagine most of my disappointment may have to do with the series moving to 3D. Having played shooters on the PC for so long (mouse+keyboard), I have always found it tough to play FPSs on the consoles. Metroid Prime was no exception; this title's control feels particularly sluggish to me.

Still, I can see why others really like it.

Joe Molotov 09-02-05 12:01 AM

FFVII is the best game in the series and one of the best RPGs of all time. :p

Breakfast with Girls 09-02-05 01:12 AM

Master of Orion III. After the first two games, there was a lot of anticipation and expectation... the fact that there was SO much fan involvement seemed really promising. But when it came out it was apparent that everything where they ignored the fans (or didn't solicit their input) was just shit (user interface, ship combat, etc.). There were also a lot of balance issues initially, and the races suffered from the ego of the art director, who managed to successfully kill any soul or spark that the first game, and the second game to a lesser extent, had.

Superboy 09-02-05 07:16 AM

I wasn't too disappointed with FFVII. It still felt like a Final Fantasy game. Many long-time fans criticized the techno-industrial setting, but it was nice to see something new. After all, there are only so many steampunk games you can make. The Materia system was simplified to be sure, but it took a sharp mind to be able to do some really wicked things with it. The only thing that bothered me was the mish-mash plot that was unraveled with secret quests. Otherwise, it was the last FF game with memorable characters for me. IX had charming characters but they were very underdeveloped.

SmackDaddy 09-02-05 07:48 AM

Halo2- After all the hype came dissapointment (at least for me). Heck, that first "city" demo was more exciting to watch than Halo2 was to play.

PSP-So far the game support has been, well, not really there. There are finally some games in the pipeline that show promise, but so far I'm thinking I should have waited on this purchase.

DJ_Longfellow 09-02-05 07:54 AM

More from me:
Destroy All Humans - Hyped up as some innovative game...very boring, repetitive

Conker - The LIVE play was not that great....game was hyped.

chess 09-02-05 08:14 AM

Twisted Metal 3, 4, Black...

I was a big fan of Twisted Metal 2...still pick it up every now and then, but the whole series went to crap after that.

nickdawgy 09-02-05 08:32 AM

Driv3r was hyped and ended up sucking big time. So was Wrestlemania 21 for Xbox.

Calico 09-03-05 01:50 AM

Kakuto Chojin for Xbox - game was made by the original MKombat guys, and they promised cool features such as bone breaks, which would affect your combat skills. Instead, it was a watered down fighter with weak combos, the bone breaks meant nothing, and it got pulled from the market for inappropriate religious references.

I agree. In addition to the two console packages from Microsoft, I just saw the inevitable bundle pricing packages (only way to pre-order) offered on ebgames.com. When something called "Core Bundle" costs $600, there's something wrong. There's no way I'll be picking this console up for quite awhile.

As far as games go, Brute Force was my biggest letdown. It had been hyped and previewed since the XBox launch, and when it finally came out it just seemed bland.

Wow, I really do not agree, FF9 to me was great. It was more along the style of part 2 and 3 and many people felt the same way and loved it. I have to ask are you an old school FF player or did you only start playing when 7 came out. As to pixyjunket have you played FF9 at all? I can see what you are saying about part 7 but playing part 9 should make you feel like you are playing the old FF again.

I've never really played 2+3 (or 4,5,6) although I did check them out a bit in recent times and wasn't that impressed. I do consider myself an old school rpg fan - phantasy star, sword of vermillion, ys, ultima, eye of beholder, wizardry, but I didn't have a snes back in the day. I did play chronotrigger only 4 years ago for the first time and absolutely loved it. FF7 was the first FF I did play, and I was greatly impressed with the characters, soundtrack, graphics, and presentation, it didc seem like a leap forward in rpg story telling at the time. I guess it was my first rpg of that gen too.

But FF9, I tried really hard to like it but bleah.. it seems they tried way too hard to get the feel of the old games, but it just seemed out of place, and most importantly, the story and characters were lacking (the most essential part of a JRPG). As I said, I do agree that 7+8 have some significant gameplay issues (although I think most JRPGs do).

Pixy posted in the other thread that he loves FF9 (but not 7+8).

I agree with the comment about the THQ wrestling games. The N64 games, wcw and wwf, had great gameplay that kept improving with each game. They were fun as well with 4 people playing. Who cares if they didnt look as good as the current generation of games.

That is why I still prefer the Tecmo Bowl games to Madden ....

Star Wars Galaxies.
How can you screw up a sure thing like a Star Wars MMORPG? Well, they sure as hell found a way because it wasn't anything like i imagined it would be and can't even compare to some of the other MMO's on the market.

Name a big-time disappointment? Sure. I'd have to say Joe.

That somewhat explains it. For most people FFVII was the first game they played in the series. So, if you thought it was great then you probably also enjoyed playing 8 & 10. IX was sort of a throwback to the earlier games in the series(I-VI), so if you played those then you probably loved IX.

I personally thought IX was the best FF game that was made on the PS1. I loved the characters, the story and even the gameplay. I thought the whole thing of learning abilities from weapons/armor etc. was cool. But I understand why some people hated it, like yourself.
