If I didn't already have a redesigned NES and SNES, I'd jump on that. I've been thinking about the wireless controllers for a while though...

If someone gets a controller with the new style D-Pad and want to trade it for the old style, let me know.

I have a top-loading NES but i'm not a crazy Nintendo Fanboy. A lot of my games sit there untouched because most of my favorite classics have been re-released (Metroid, Mega Man 2/3, Super Mario 1/2/3, Zelda 1/2). I'm also somewhat of a fanatic collector too; most of the games I get are mint/complete with everything. Although the cardboard boxes make them hard to keep in good condition.

I remember when I was a kid and I traded in my mint NES games with boxes and manuals to get a Super Nintendo and some games and they said they couldn't pay me any more for the boxes or manuals and so I stupidly gave them to them for free.

I had some good ones, too... Castlevania, Mario 2 and 3, and some others.

Ugh, don't remind me. I got rid of most of NES/SNES collection between my 16-18 years to pay for alcohol, weed and fast food. It's depressing to think about it now. Thankfully I have a massive collection now and I don't care about the boxes but every once in a while I think of how many boxes and manuals I threw away.

Well, the first run of these were shown off and sold at the Classic Gaming Expo over the weekend so I'll be posting any reviews I can find for it here. Almost everyone I've heard from so far is just blown away by the size and design of the system. Comments of video quality were positive but I'm waiting for someone to see/hear the system in the comfort of their own home as opposed to a busy convention.

Compatibility has been a long-running concern for the NEX. Yes, it is a "clone" system but is NOT running on the same chips that are used in the Hong Kong after-market NESes that are flooding eBay and flea markets, which have numerous compatibility issues. According to one member of the Digital Press forum, the head guy at Messiah said that of 650+ NES games, there are only 2 with compatibility issues (which two were not named for some reason).

Can't say I'm a fan of the cartridge sticking out like that but a small gripe overall. I'm still working with someone on another forum trying to get some common games that have problems on other Famicom clones tested out to gauge compatibility.

Even though your typical Gamestop jockey doesn't know what an NES is:

Too bad they stopped buying/selling old games to go with it.

FINALLY! Thanks for the review. It sounds like most of the fears we've had (over at Digital Press) are true.

Sad to see really, this could've been a great product.

"Pathetic game compatibility. Glitchy sound. Dumb controller design with superfluous buttons and odd button placement."

And a 4/10.

What a waste.

With all of the horror stories I've heard about original code being long gone for so many games, I'm never going to get rid of my carts (only plan to add to the collection). I look forward to the day when this idea, you know, works.

I bet it'll be a redo of the Atari Flashback. Several people buy it based on the nostalgia/retro factor regardless of the inaccuracies (many of which will be unnoticeable or unimportant to a lot of people) alongside the negative feedback from the hardcore types of who these inaccuracies are important end up producing a Generation NEX 2.

If they do make a second model (maybe with Nintendo's involvement as they were approached about it the first time) I may bite.. as is, this one looks like any other bootleg NES in a really cool looking case.

Sigh.. I just wish I could have a top-loader with the front-loader's video output.

At one point in time I found instructions online to add composite outputs to a top loader. It did require some minor soldering, but I don't think it required any dremel/case work. I'll see if I can find it for you when I get off work.

I have those schematics! The problem is there's still a shielding (?) issue with the video chip on the main board that causes dim vertical lines in the video. The composite mod does clean the signal up a bit.. but the front-loader is still noticeably better. They really went cheap when the made the redesign (while on the other hand, the Japanese redesign vastly improved the video quality of the original Famicom).
