Queston on availability of PSP UMD Movies

Don't know if this is the right area for this since it's about the movies and not games but it is for a game system so I'll start here.

I know Amazon has the movie UMDs for sale. Does anyone know if Best Buy or Circuit City will have the movie UMDs? I know on DVDs they always have a fairly good sale price the release week, just wondering if they will do the same thing for UMDs. The first set of movies start coming out next week so I'm debating on ordering from Amazon or just wait for Best Buy. I know I can transfer my own movies to memory stick which I have done already but what a pain in the a$$. I have to take some flights soon so I thought I'd get a few movies I like to keep me busy.

I've seen them at Gamestop. A few weeks ago they had about 5 different titles. Might be more now.

I didn't know any were out yet. Everyone on Amazon is still preorder. Do you remember how much they were selling for and any of the titles?

Spiderman 2 of course. Hellboy. Can't think of any others. Actually I don't know if there were just pre order boxes or not. They had many copies of each title though. I didn't notice a price.

We got some in at Walmart, that go on sale Tuesday. Killbill Vol 1, and Pirates of the Caribbean, but they are $24 each. ouch.

KingSmoth 04-13-05 11:28 PM

My Wal-Mart already has Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Pirates out for sale, $23.88, bleh....

Draven 04-14-05 12:13 AM

$24 each? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

What a fucking joke. I own a PSP and I'd never pay more than 10 bucks at the MOST for a UMD. Sony can kiss my ass.

DeanoBKN 04-14-05 12:33 AM

I agree...very overpriced considering how limited the use of the format is. Also...I can just transfer the DVD version onto my memory card for free.

Gizmo 04-14-05 01:40 AM

Considering Kill Bill and Pirtates can be had on DVD for $15 or less, this could be the death of UMD Movies. Ideally, these movies should MSRP for $14.99, and be available for $13 or less. These are impulse buys. They are NOT DVDs where you can watch them in your living room, bedroom, laptop, car, etc. You can ONLY watch them on the PSP, and really, who wants to watch a 2 hour movies on a tiny screen more then twice?

JChaos 04-14-05 09:07 AM

We got Kill Bill in at my store and I noticed that it said 2.35:1 on the back, so it looks like at least some movies will be in their OAR.

PerryD 04-14-05 09:09 AM

I think next Tuesday's releases include XXX, Resident Evil 2, Hellboy, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and House of the Flying Daggers. All but Daggers ($28) lists at $20, I would guess you could pick them up with a Best Buy gamer's coupon for $15.

fujishig 04-14-05 10:56 AM

Hmm... should I pay 20-30 bucks to get a movie that I probably already own on a smaller format, not in OAR, will drain the battery after playing and with less features than it's DVD cousin, or just rip some of the DVDs I own into a format suitable for the memory stick, losing some quality in the process?

DJ_Longfellow 04-14-05 11:05 AM

Circuit City will have all the available movies on sale for $12.99 next week....although, House of Daggers will be $17.99

Flay 04-14-05 11:38 AM

Pretty crappy selection at this point. Ripping your own DVD is the best solution. You can fit a couple 2 hour movies on a 1 gig card or 4 90 minute flicks on the same.

A nice tip: Cut the credits off of a movie with DVD shrink. While only 5 to 10 minutes of video, it will save you precious space on your memory card.

Brewc 04-14-05 11:52 AM

What's the best software or site that shows you how to get my dvds on to the memory card. if it's best email me so we don't get the thread look at for talking about this.

Flay, I am using PSP Video 9 to encode the movie, but it came out huge when I did it. What settings do you use to get the video under 500MB to fit 2 on the gig stick? Should I use a different software?

I use DVD Shrink to chop out the credits long with any other usless stuff and resize the video with VirtualDub before going to Video 9. VirtualDub has great compression techniques and you can really see the difference in the end result.

Usually use 368x208/29.97fps/QB10 Stereo/32kbps and that puts out a file size of around 450 meg for a 2 hour flick.

I did try a larger movie and got Return of the King in at 717 meg.

Thanks for the tip, I am going to try to remove the credits and use the settings you suggested.

How do you resize the video in VirtualDub?

movies need to hit $9.99

and even then it's a debate between umd and just buying the dvd and encoding it to duo

alexkat 04-14-05 04:41 PM

I was at Target yesterday in Torrance i think, and they had XXX, Resident Evil Apocalypse, Hellboy, and House of Flying Daggers. The guy there told me they were $14.99, I didn't buy any so I can't confirm.

SinCity 04-17-05 01:39 AM

at first, the thought of umd movies sounded cool. now, however, it looks as if sony is just trying to release the same movies over again that already released on DVD with excellent bonus material + quality and porting them to UMD with worse quality and no extras. And to charge $15-25 for them is just outrageous. UMD movies were one of my main reasons to buy a PSP. Now, I'm starting to lean more towards just sticking with my portable DVD Player. Sure, its bigger and uglier but at least i dont have to repurchase movies or spend loads of cash on memory sticks to be playable on the format.

joshd2012 04-17-05 10:24 AM

Circuit City has all their UMD movies for $12.99 except for Crouching Tiger which is $17.99 for some reason.

darkside 04-17-05 10:37 AM

UMD movies seem like a decent deal for $12.99. House of Flying Daggers is $17.99 though. If I was traveling and wanted to grab a couple of movies for a trip I wouldn't have a problem with $12.99. I'm betting they will get cheaper once they have been on the market awhile.

Those GBA videos were selling pretty well for $19.99 and they only had about 45 minutes of content and much lower resolution and quality.

Cyberock 04-17-05 11:53 AM

no one seems to be listing Pirates of the Carribean which is suppose to be out tuesday according to Amazon

edstein 04-17-05 12:20 PM

Pirates and Daggers are the only releases I would consider getting.
