Saw a commercial for the release of Flying Daggers last night, and at the end of the commercial, they also mentioned "also available on Sony UMD." Looks like Sony is trying to advertise these, but I don't know how well they'll sell unless the prices come down.

Target by me sold out of Hellboy ...ugh it was 12.99

RyoHazuki 04-17-05 07:37 PM

I saw Kill Bill at Best Buy the other day and it was marked 29.99 . What the hell are they thinking?

At that price, they might get a few dumb consumers thinking it's actually a game!

If Sony was really smart, they would release certain movies exclusively on UMD format first, like a 2 weeks before it hit DVD. You can bet that would get people's attention when they see their friend watching a must have video on their PSP that they can't have yet.

But Sony's movie arm would never let that happen, they'd lose to much money in DVD sales. (Greater time to market = less DVD sales)

Gizmo 04-18-05 01:15 AM

Where are these located, in the games or DVD department?

That's potentially millions and millions of lost revenue in DVD sales. No way they'd do that. They need to do two things: release good movies, including new ones that are coming to DVD and price them to where they are competitive w/ DVD prices. Once they do that, it'll catch on. Until then, Sony will continue to price themselves out of the market like they did with minidisc and be stuck supporting something that doesn't sell extremely well.

Was in Walmart yesterday and they were kinda in a transition area, between games and DVDs. I imagine they'll be in games like the GBA video carts were.

Actually I don't think that's a bad idea. It would cause people to double dip on movies. You can't watch the UMDs on a t.v. with surround sound. I don't think anyone buying the UMD is buying it as their main copy of the movie. They will still want the dvd. The other thing is, how would they be losing money? It's not the idea of UMD vs DVD. It's has to do with how many sell for the home no matter what the format, dvd, vhs, umd and whatever else may be down the line.

karnblack 04-18-05 02:32 PM

$5 would make the UMD movies an impulse buy for me. Otherwise there's no reason for me to buy the DVD and the UMD.

Yeah, $5 would be an impulse buy for nearly everyone. But with the cost of the disc itself and packaging, it will never fall to $5 or less unless Sony does away with the UMD Movies completly.

Ah, less than 10 bucks and I'd consider it. 12.99 on sale is too close to the 14.99 new DVD release sale price for me psychologically, and these movies are older.

I still say airport rentals and stuff like that would be a better business model...

Yes. I was simply agreeing with you and expanding on your argument to add my own comments.

Ok, my bad. It seemed like you trying to argue against my first portion. Carry on... :)

I agree, I don't think theres a pricing structure where sony will be happy with the profit AND consumers will be willing to buy them in addition to DVDs (or in place of DVDs).

Gizmo 04-19-05 03:03 PM

Picked up Reident Evil today at Target for $12.99

SinCity 04-19-05 05:12 PM

even 12.99 seems high. when i get my PSP, ill try and pick up some pre-used UMD movies for a good price.

JaxComet 04-19-05 09:06 PM

I'm thinking that $12 or so would be the max I'd be willing to pay for a UMD movie.....

tidwell 04-20-05 01:34 PM

Strawberries (which is always ridiculous anyway) has Kill Bill v.1 for just $29.99.
Good God, man.
Anything that has been on DVD already should be 9.99 tops.

I agree, it would be different if sony had allowed some type of AV cables so you could hook the PSP up to a TV, at least with those you could watch UMD's with your family or something.

So the current sale prices are 99 cents more than you're willing to pay? :)

In theory it would be nice, but in reality the quality would seriously lack. Besides, Sony needs another reason for you to pick up a PS3...

BJ's Wholesale Club

BJ's had a few movies. XXX, Resident Evil, Hellboy, Flying Daggers, and a few others I dont remember. All movies were 12.99 (which are about 19.99 everywhere else) except for Daggers which was 18.99 (which is about 29.99 everywhere else) Resident and XXX were tempting, but when you can just convert a DVD over to the mem stick, I decided against it.

Like you guys mentioned above, if the prices were ALOT lower (although 12.99 is not as bad as some of the stores) then I may consider it. Personally I do LOVE the idea of the umd movies, but that price is REALLY scaring me away...

Tarantino 04-20-05 05:41 PM

We got in Pirates of the Carribean and Kill Bill, each at $29.99. My initial reaction was to make sure the prices were right, and they were...what a horrible rip off.
