DOOM 3 (XBOX) Whose getting it tomorrow???

I know...I know...some hate it...some love it....too dark...too monotonous...sucky multiplayer. I have no clue, I don't have it on PC. The reviews of the XBOX versions have been great so far. I am going to take the plunge and get it. Who else is getting it???

bryce0lynch 04-04-05 08:14 AM

I would remind you that the initial reviews on the PC version were very posative also. Then the crack ran out. Try a rental first?

wlj 04-04-05 08:16 AM

LOL :) "Then the crack ran out..."

TheMadMonk 04-04-05 08:51 AM

Yeah, I don't like how some of the first 5 glowing reviews are already 1 and a half months old, and the game isn't out yet. I don't trust 'em. Either way, I wasn't going to get this game anyway, until it hits ~$20.

DJ_Longfellow 04-04-05 08:55 AM

So, it comes out Tuesday? I thought it was today....oh well.

wlj 04-04-05 09:00 AM

here's IGN's review...not too shabby

10 Presentation
One of the best examples of sound, audio, and atmosphere in any Xbox game.

10 Graphics
Clean, beautiful, detailed characters, backgrounds, all backed up by exquisite lighting, special effects and animation.

9.5 Sound
Half of this game is based purely on the distinct layers of impactful sound effects, tones, great voice acting, and the disturbing evil of whispers, laughter, and atmospheric music.

8.5 Gameplay
Simple, straightforward, and predictable, yet, made great by superb weaponry, great interfaces, and smooth loveable controls.

9.0 Lasting Appeal
The Xbox multiplayer is better than the PC, thanks to the awesome two-player online co-op mode. The rest of the multiplayer stuff is standard likeable stuff, it's just not great.

9.3 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average

Hey Longfellow....I am just assuming it is out tomorrow...since most games come out on Tuesday...I will call my local game store and find out...It would be awesome if it comes out today. Thanks

A friend of mine has the PC version. His review was that it's just the original Doom with killer graphics, same basic "story", etc. That doesn't get me very excited.

Centurion 04-04-05 09:14 AM

I was looking forward to this release until I came across a lot of feedback all complaining about the same things. This of course was in regards to the PC version. Since this game is a FPS and available on both platforms, I would get it for the PC anyway.

The reason I even bothered to read this thread is to ask if you guys could post a review. I'm interested in hearing what you guys think about the game on the Xbox.

Got to get it now and got to get Spliner Cell CT as well! :)

One major difference between the Xbox and PC versions is that the Xbox has Co-op play through Xbox Live and system link. I'm not sure how well it's executed, but a feature like that might mean the difference between a rental and a purchase for some people.

Personally, I think I'll wait a bit on this one, I'm still caught up in God of War for PS2.

DJ_Longfellow 04-04-05 09:57 AM

Well, I had it pre-ordered at GameRush...had credit, got the CE for trade 2, get a pre-order for $30. So, it was a good deal....and if I hate it, I trade it back and get the same as what I paid

DealMan 04-04-05 10:16 AM

Picked it up at my local Gamerush midnight Doom 3 release party last night (I was one out of a whopping 4 people there).

Spent a few hours playing System-Link co-op with my roomate, which is a lot of fun. We also briefly tried playing Doom1, which is also amazingly fun, although for the co-op mode you have to play split screen.

I never played it for the PC, so I'm happy with this purchase.

sweet.....so it should actually be in stores today....I just thought it would ship to stores today. Thanks.

DamingR 04-04-05 11:14 AM

Had it pre-ordered at GameRush, but put the credit towards PSP. I'll be picking it up at $20, along with Unreal and Jade Empire.

I just can't justify spending $50 on most games now that they all seem to drop in price within a few months.

wlj 04-04-05 12:05 PM

just picked the game up on my lunch hour at the local Sam Goody. I got the Collector's edition for 59.99. Very Very Slick packaging....has the same metal case as the Halo 2 LE. Cool artwork on the metal tin. Can't wait to get home to play it.

Gromit 04-04-05 12:32 PM

It's available at Best Buy already as well. I saw it at lunch today.

I got in on the same deal, Picked it up at midnight last night but haven't gotten a chance to play.

milo bloom 04-04-05 01:27 PM

I'll pick it up soon, just not right now. We're still unpacking from the move and I don't have my Xbox unpacked. But I used to play the heck out of Doom for the 32X and I have the PS1 versions that are still fun to play.

Spiderbite 04-04-05 02:34 PM

I am picking up my copy today. I got it with their trade in deal of 5 for $50 with a bunch of games i never could get rid of.

I am mainly buying it for the Xbox Live Co-op option. A buddy and I like to play a lot of co-op and this was the next best thing since Halo 2 dropped their Live co-op option (the bastards).

maxpower 04-04-05 03:01 PM

Picked it up last night...at gamerush...did the trade in 2 get new for $30 and if it's three games you get an additional $5 per game....ended up trading 3 games(Links2004,nfl2k5,ghostrecon1) and still had $4 credit.

Same basic story maybe, but i'd say it's not anything like the original game as far as gameplay goes.

Cardiff Giant11 04-04-05 05:17 PM

Hmm, I may go pick this up. Played the demo on the PC and while it was repetitive, the original doom games were but I played the hell out of them.
I may pickup the CE too since I now have a Mac and don't have Doom 1 and 2 for the Mac. Actually now that I think about it, I'm not sure I ever played the non shareware levels of the original Doom. I know I played Doom 2 all the way through but I don't think I ever played all of the first game.

Leechboy 04-04-05 05:22 PM

The limited one is only 1 disc right? That what mine was. I also got some "Making of Doom 3" dvd from Best Buy.

UPDATE: It is not a dvd included at Bast Buy. It's a little tiny book in a dvd case -confused-

Josh H 04-04-05 05:27 PM

I'm tempted, but I'm holding off as I have a back log. Playing Zelda: Minish Cap now, then need to go back to Metroid Prime 2 (stuck at spider ball guardian), then plan to start and finish Ratchet and Clank 2.

And on top of that I'll probably try to play Resident Evil 4 and God of War before Doom 3, not to mention the big first party DS games whenever they start trickling out.

So at that rate Doom 3 will probably be a platinum hit by the time I get around to it. :D

JaxComet 04-04-05 05:37 PM

Cool game but I already played it on the PC. I'd like to see how it looks on the XBOX though......

nemein 04-04-05 07:19 PM

Rented it from HV and it while it does look good I am so absolutely frigging sick of dark games... I mean physically dark/no light games :( The fact you can't have the flashlight and a weapon at the same time is cheesy too IMHO.

wlj 04-04-05 08:49 PM

Well like I said, I got the CE today at lunch. I finally got a chance to play some this evening...probably 1.5 hours. I never have played the computer version...but I am blown away by the graphics of this game. If the PC version looks much better than this, it can't be by much. I am really enjoying it so far, but I am not very far as you can see...I am at the part where I am trying to make it to the labs to meet up with bravo team. The game has definitely made me jump a few times...I have never played a game with this much atmosphere before that is for sure. So far I am happy with my purchase.

Cardiff Giant11 04-04-05 08:50 PM

Went out and picked it up at Circuit City because it's only 39.99 for the regular version there (I decided 20 bucks for Doom 1 and 2 wasn't worth it). I played it for about an hour and a half. So far I like it, though I do find myself getting lost alot and having to take a decent amount of time to find where to go next. Other than that though I like it. Graphics are very nice and the sound is also very well done.

boredsilly 04-04-05 08:55 PM

I plan on getting it when the price drops. I've heard all the bad stuff about it, but I'm still curious to play it. Though if my comp can handle it I might go the pc route so I can get one of those flashlight tape mods.

kar10 04-04-05 10:38 PM

Does the Collector's Edition have 2 discs?

maxpower 04-04-05 10:45 PM

1 disc.

Giantrobo 04-05-05 03:40 AM

I almost picked this up yesterday but something made me hold off....

nickdawgy 04-05-05 04:09 AM

I played the PC version. It was pretty cool, but I'm not interested in the Xbox version.

wlj 04-05-05 06:56 AM

I played it 2 more hours last night before I went to bed...which makes a total of 3.5 hours played last night ---- I am going to be honest ---- THIS GAME IS FRIGGIN AWESOME!! I agree that the gameplay is kind of repetitive, but it doesn't bother me...I had to almost pry my hands off the controller to stop playing...I just couldn't wait to see what was around the next corner. This game has the best graphics I have seen on XBOX...almost could pass for XBOX 2 in my opinion. One thing that definitely rocks about the game is that you can save ANYTIME...all you have to do is hit the <BACK> button on your controller and the game does a quick save. My current progress in the game is I am somewhere in the Alpha Labs...I have been there for a while. Can't wait to play somemore tonight.

DJ_Longfellow 04-05-05 07:07 AM

Well, I'm a little disappointed in the game. Yes, the graphics are good....but it's just the same few characters over and over and over.

I played the single player for about 2-3 hours, and I found it good....but I found it repetitive. No scenery changes, just the same damn base. Does it ever change?

I also played a little deathmatch online, and that was just boring. Aiming tended to suck online....just nothing too fun online. Halo 2 and TimeSplitters are more fun for multiplayer for sure. Maybe Co-Op would be decent, but the game just got boring to me.

Ill probably hang on to it since I have the LE of the game...but we''ll see, nothing really BLEW me away with this. A decent game, but nothing too innovative. Same small corridors.

wlj 04-05-05 07:14 AM

well Halo:Combat Evolved had VERY repetitive scenery and it is loved by millions(myself included). I would assume in Doom 3 you will stay in the base the whole game...NO SPOILERS PLEASE...since you are on Mars...I mean you couldn't leave the base unless you put a spacesuit on. Maybe it is just me, but the scenery doesn't seem that repetitive....I mean you are still in the base...but each room looks different to me.

I guess I just like more OPEN environments.....Doom 3 is just too close, too confined....but I guess that is some of the charm of the game. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent game, but nothing GREAT. Glad I got it cheap/free from GameRush. I may trade it back, but I'm not sure yet.

I thought the graphics were good, but a lot seems to be missed because of darkness. Also, what ever happened to destructable environments? Most games have that these days....I think the only thing you can break is a window.

Oh well....

Also, how LONG is the single player game? How many hours about?

wlj 04-05-05 08:05 AM

Yeah I hear what you are saying...I wasn't 100% sure that I was gonna like this game or not...the confined spaces and the darkness just makes it all the more fun for me...I feel like I am there just not playing a game. I will let you know my total opinion once I finish the game. So far I am having as much fun as I have ever had with a FPS...but that could change at the drop of a hat...you never know. I am interested in how many hours it takes as well.

wlj

nemein 04-05-05 08:11 AM

Also, how LONG is the single player game? How many hours about?
Looking at the walk-through (from the PC version but so far it's been mostly correct), I'm about 1/2 way through after 4-5 hours of playing. That's on the easy level and referring to the walk through for the cabinet code instead of reading through all the PDA material though ;)

maxpower 04-05-05 08:17 AM

There will always be people who criticize a game for being too much like it's predecessor(there is a reason why it was beloved). On the flip side there will also be people who criticize a game for not being like it's predecessor. It's inevitable.

Unless the game is a total crapfest....the two factions while being the loudest will be well in the minority. To me this is Doom in the vein of the remake of resident evil. While not a remake of original Doom it is the game that brings the franchise to life with today's graphics.
To me it has what makes Aliens, Halo, Resident Evil my type of movie and games. I love the sci-fi horror aspect portrayed in a world where the humans may be technologically advanced only to a certain extent. Projectile weapons are still the standard. Creepy things still roam the darkness and the confined spaces only add to the atmosphere. Of course Doom could have gone with wide open environments...but then it would have lost that sense of confinement. They could have made it possible to hold both the flashlight and guns in hand( to be honest I don't really care but I would have liked for the handgun and flashlight to be held together). But for those bemoaning the lack of duct tape in the future I say, that is part of the charm of the game...in the case you are so concerned about being able to see...they could have easily made the installation have emergency lighting that was unaffected by the goings on. Or given the marine night vision...but what's the point if the darkness becomes a non-entity in the gameplay?
Luckily there is an easy mode for those who find the confined, dark spaces too hard.
