I played a little bit last night and the graphics were unbelievable. I am playing on a 65" HDTV and it was just beautiful. The 5.1 sound is awesome as well (though some of the voices seem a little too loud).
I did not get to play very long so I can't really comment fairly on the gameplay. |
The scenery changes
Spoiler:
On another note, I've played this game so much in the past two days that I've gone through two pairs of batteries on my Logitech Wireless controller. Between my Doom 3 playing and my girlfriend playing Link to the Past, we're going through them duracells pretty darm quick. I finally plugged in my wired controller and will use that until I finish it. :) |

I'm curious to see how the "Doom 3 is awesome!" people feel after the honeymoon is over. I know I felt the same way during the first few hours of Doom3 on the PC. Don't know quite where the fun turned into drudgery, but it happened WELL before I got to the end. |

I must not be at the middle part yet....I am going through the Alpha Labs now...I think probably near the end of that part. I am still having a blast. wlj |

2. Turning off the rumble will extend the battery life a great deal. |
I have to say...initially I was fairly indifferent to a rumbling controller. But I have to say ...there are a number of games that make excellent use of the feature. The way the rumble works adds immensely to the feel of the game.
|
I'm just the opposite, I've never liked it since I first tried it with the rumble pack on the N64.
Rather than immerssing me, the vibrating piece of plastic in my hand just reminds me that I'm holding a controller and playing a video game. |
I like the rumble feature....especially in FPS or any game where you shoot guns. It adds alot more to the fun factor in my opinion.
wlj |
I don't think the Dreamcast rumble did much either...or at least enough to stand out. But I have to say with the XBox...i have noticed the rumble is not just simple shaking. It fits the action to a "T" on some games. I've noticed on driving games ..you can feel the rumble of skidding versus the rumble of going over bumps versus the rumble of crashing. It's not just the intensity of the rumble. It changes even within one sequence to give differing sensations.

So is the not being able to use a flashlight and a gun at the same time enough for someone not to get this game? I mean the concept sounds retarded. It's the 22nd century and you are on Mars yet you can't find any tape? I might get it if the price drops.
|
I am only 4 hours in, but the whole flashlight and gun thing is not frustrating me yet. I realize it is dumb not to be able to tape...but they made it like that to make the game more scary and intense. I don't have a problem with it.
wlj |
You do run into some pitch black hallways that you either have to guess where the targets are or annoyingly quickly switch back and forth between the light and the gun. Also screw tape (although that would have been an interesting approach to have some hidden away somewhere) just a simple two handed pistol/flashlight "like in the cop shows" would be fine. Even if you want to knock the accuracy down a notch to "compensate" that would be better than what you have now IMHO.
|
ID software did the flashlight thing for effect...not realism. It would take alot of the scare factor away if you could use both at the same time...I know...I know...it makes more sense to be able to use both, but the game would not be the same. You wouldn't think in your head..."Man its dark over there I need to use my flashlight...but what if something jumps out then I will need my gun?? What do I do??" Realistic, unrealistic...it helps to put more "horror" into the game.

I picked up the game about 6 hours ago and I've been playing almost that entire time. Fun game? Yeah....I think so but it's about as shallow as a kiddie pool. I don't even bother with the PDA stuff since it's not essential to beating the game.
I played a game online and was the pace of the game was WAY faster than the single player. It was fun but I couldn't get over how fast the character moves. |
Yea got it alreadyon da xbox, mad game!!! cantt pass one level grrrrrr
xbox rocks ...i play it on a Hi ress screen graphics looks sick mate! TV's not 2 mad also |
whats the last level??? a big ass demon with probs around him ??? if so i cant kill the bastard!!!
looks like a rat on steroids |
Just finished it... if I had to take a guess I'd say in all it was about 11-12 hours, there were just a couple of places I got hung up (reflexes aren't like they used to be :(). Overall it was enjoyable but I'm glad I rented it. The graphics were great, the game play was average, the lighting/darkness looked great but distracted/annoyed me more than pulled me into the game, the enemy AI was mediocre (but maybe that's because I was playing on easy) and finally it did get kind of tedious/repetitive towards the middle/end.

I am currently at the beginning of the "Delta Section" after the second time you get on the monorail...approximately how many hours do I have left?
Yesterday I went out and bought the HD AV Pack(got 10 bucks off any 19.99 accessory when you purchase Doom 3 at Sam Goody). I must say....HOLY CRAP this game is even more awesome in 5.1 surround sound...I will even say that with the surround sound this game is one of my "Top Ten" favorite games of all time. I wish I would have bought the HD AV pack a long time ago...I am going to replay some of my games with it(Halo, Halo 2 etc...). I am definitely in the minority I guess, but I can definitely see myself playing through this game several more times. Do you think they will come out the the Resurrection of Evil expansion for Xbox?? I hope so, cause i don't have a computer that will run it....I hate playing on PC anyway. wlj |

And wlj...you have a 5.1 system and never bought the HD AV pack??? What the hell? I must call you out as silly as well. |

It seems kind of silly to even make a comment on the AI if you play a game on the "easy" mode. |

For example, I personally think Halo or Halo 2 should be played for the first time on the second to highest difficulty (forgot what it's called but the one just before 'Legendary'). In all honesty, only a handful of X-box games I've played take full advantage of the 5.1. Most games sound about the same to me as the PS2 and GC ones on my system which are just hooked up via pro logic I.
It's a shame more developers haven't taken full advantage, b/c it kicks ass in games like Halo that use it well. |
How many levels in the campaign? I know the coop has about 20.

I haven't played a ton as the game lineup doesn't match my tastes well, but off the top of my head..
Halo Halo 2 Splinter Cell Panzer Dragoon Madden (2 or 3 years of them) NFL2K4 NBA2K4 KOTOR Beyond Good & Evil Dead or Alive 3 Soul Calibur 2 MVP Baseball 2004 and probalby a couple I'm forgetting. Of those, only the Halo's really used the 5.1 sound well IMO. Most the other games didn't take much advantage of seperate rear channels and just sounded like clearer pro-logic sound for the most part. But I'm far from an audiophile and probably not as keen on the differences as most, so I probably only notice in a game like Halo that uses it well and for gameplay relevent purposes. |
Friend of mine managed to buy a 32" LCD HDTV last week. He purchased Doom 3 CE and we got the HD AV Pack. It looks really good.

Edited to add: All I'm saying is, the developers did a great job with pushing the Xbox graphics capabilities (nVidia chip) and a tube TV will really show how good it looks. |
Played this for about 20-25 minutes at EB today, wasn't too impressed. Wasn't as blown away by the graphics as I expected to be, maybe the TV was just crappy. I will probably get this for the new computer I am buying soon just to test out the video card. Maybe it was just me but I felt like the creatures/people didn't react or reacted awkwardly when I shot them. After playing RE4 I was used to every place I hit affecting the enemy differently, the enemies in Doom 3 just seemed to be moving blocks. Maybe I didn't play long enough, I will give this game another chance on a new computer.

I'm a huge DOOM fan, so I had to buy the CE. I'm probably 7-8 hours in, and I love it. The game is bringing back all the old memories of playing DOOM at 2am with the lights out.
The hallucinations are a nice touch, similar to Eternal Darkness. The darkness, tight quarters and almost deathly silence create a very intense atmosphere. The complaints regarding these aspects of the game baffle me - the base level design is similar to DOOM, not to mention the fact that the first two games were dark also. The only noted difference to me is that DOOM 3 has toned down the action with smaller skirmishes in favor of creepy atmosphere, as opposed to throwing hordes of enemies upon you at every turn(Suburbs in II being my favorite). The game is obviously intended for a single-player experience, as opposed to a crazed co-op slaughterfest. I wish I had 5.1 and HDTV right now, because this game is beautiful... |
