I played a little bit last night and the graphics were unbelievable. I am playing on a 65" HDTV and it was just beautiful. The 5.1 sound is awesome as well (though some of the voices seem a little too loud).

I did not get to play very long so I can't really comment fairly on the gameplay.

Spoiler:
when you get to Hell.

On another note, I've played this game so much in the past two days that I've gone through two pairs of batteries on my Logitech Wireless controller. Between my Doom 3 playing and my girlfriend playing Link to the Past, we're going through them duracells pretty darm quick. I finally plugged in my wired controller and will use that until I finish it. :)

And how long does that take? I heard that's only a short part of the game also.....I played for 3 hours yesterday on single player, and I honestly don't know if I have the desire to go back and play....I probably will, just to say I finished it.

Maybe you've just been gaming too much and she's using the duracells for other purposes :D

Spoiler:
I believe HELL is just 1 level.

I'm curious to see how the "Doom 3 is awesome!" people feel after the honeymoon is over. I know I felt the same way during the first few hours of Doom3 on the PC. Don't know quite where the fun turned into drudgery, but it happened WELL before I got to the end.

The only way I see that happening with me is the game gets frustratingly hard. That is the main thing that will turn me off to a game....I hate games that are unfair and piss you off. From what I heard about the game ---

Beginning --- Good
Middle --- Monotonous and boring
End --- Great

Is that pretty much how it is?? I must not be at the middle part yet....I am going through the Alpha Labs now...I think probably near the end of that part. I am still having a blast.

1. Rechargable NihM batteries are a must. They last longer and save a ton of money since they can be recharged 100+ times.

2. Turning off the rumble will extend the battery life a great deal.

maxpower 04-05-05 01:04 PM

I have to say...initially I was fairly indifferent to a rumbling controller. But I have to say ...there are a number of games that make excellent use of the feature. The way the rumble works adds immensely to the feel of the game.

Josh H 04-05-05 01:08 PM

I'm just the opposite, I've never liked it since I first tried it with the rumble pack on the N64.

Rather than immerssing me, the vibrating piece of plastic in my hand just reminds me that I'm holding a controller and playing a video game.

wlj 04-05-05 01:08 PM

I like the rumble feature....especially in FPS or any game where you shoot guns. It adds alot more to the fun factor in my opinion.

wlj

maxpower 04-05-05 01:17 PM

I don't think the Dreamcast rumble did much either...or at least enough to stand out. But I have to say with the XBox...i have noticed the rumble is not just simple shaking. It fits the action to a "T" on some games. I've noticed on driving games ..you can feel the rumble of skidding versus the rumble of going over bumps versus the rumble of crashing. It's not just the intensity of the rumble. It changes even within one sequence to give differing sensations.

nemein 04-05-05 01:22 PM

I didn't think I'd like it at first but when I first started using a wireless controller I turned it off to save on the batteries and something felt like it was missing from the games. To stay on topic though count me as another who's burned through a set of batteries playing this game ;)

Mopower 04-05-05 01:37 PM

So is the not being able to use a flashlight and a gun at the same time enough for someone not to get this game? I mean the concept sounds retarded. It's the 22nd century and you are on Mars yet you can't find any tape? I might get it if the price drops.

wlj 04-05-05 02:00 PM

I am only 4 hours in, but the whole flashlight and gun thing is not frustrating me yet. I realize it is dumb not to be able to tape...but they made it like that to make the game more scary and intense. I don't have a problem with it.

wlj

nemein 04-05-05 02:04 PM

You do run into some pitch black hallways that you either have to guess where the targets are or annoyingly quickly switch back and forth between the light and the gun. Also screw tape (although that would have been an interesting approach to have some hidden away somewhere) just a simple two handed pistol/flashlight "like in the cop shows" would be fine. Even if you want to knock the accuracy down a notch to "compensate" that would be better than what you have now IMHO.

wlj 04-05-05 02:31 PM

ID software did the flashlight thing for effect...not realism. It would take alot of the scare factor away if you could use both at the same time...I know...I know...it makes more sense to be able to use both, but the game would not be the same. You wouldn't think in your head..."Man its dark over there I need to use my flashlight...but what if something jumps out then I will need my gun?? What do I do??" Realistic, unrealistic...it helps to put more "horror" into the game.

I agree the flashlight and shadow effects look really good but game play wise I have to say the pitch black corridors are just pissing me off. There's a couple of them later in the game
Spoiler:
around the transport tubes right before you go to hell
that just annoyed me/almost got me killed a couple of times. I don't mind getting killed in games if I screwed up but if the mechanic of the game is bad and that's causing it that's another story IMHO ;)

MasterofDVD 04-05-05 11:54 PM

I picked up the game about 6 hours ago and I've been playing almost that entire time. Fun game? Yeah....I think so but it's about as shallow as a kiddie pool. I don't even bother with the PDA stuff since it's not essential to beating the game.

I played a game online and was the pace of the game was WAY faster than the single player. It was fun but I couldn't get over how fast the character moves.

WOG 04-06-05 05:40 AM

nemein 04-07-05 12:29 AM

Just finished it... if I had to take a guess I'd say in all it was about 11-12 hours, there were just a couple of places I got hung up (reflexes aren't like they used to be :(). Overall it was enjoyable but I'm glad I rented it. The graphics were great, the game play was average, the lighting/darkness looked great but distracted/annoyed me more than pulled me into the game, the enemy AI was mediocre (but maybe that's because I was playing on easy) and finally it did get kind of tedious/repetitive towards the middle/end.

wlj 04-07-05 06:44 AM

I am currently at the beginning of the "Delta Section" after the second time you get on the monorail...approximately how many hours do I have left?

Yesterday I went out and bought the HD AV Pack(got 10 bucks off any 19.99 accessory when you purchase Doom 3 at Sam Goody). I must say....HOLY CRAP this game is even more awesome in 5.1 surround sound...I will even say that with the surround sound this game is one of my "Top Ten" favorite games of all time. I wish I would have bought the HD AV pack a long time ago...I am going to replay some of my games with it(Halo, Halo 2 etc...). I am definitely in the minority I guess, but I can definitely see myself playing through this game several more times. Do you think they will come out the the Resurrection of Evil expansion for Xbox?? I hope so, cause i don't have a computer that will run it....I hate playing on PC anyway.

It seems kind of silly to even make a comment on the AI if you play a game on the "easy" mode. Your time would also be shortened abit from those of us playing on the "hard" mode. But my comments apply to every game, not just Doom 3.

And wlj...you have a 5.1 system and never bought the HD AV pack??? What the hell? I must call you out as silly as well.

I don't know... I mean even on "easy" the enemies in HALO showed more "awareness" than those in Doom. That's more what I was basing the comment on.

This is so true and is the reason why I stop playing games at their default setting. If that happens to be 'Easy', I'll bump it up to 'Medium'; if it happens to be 'Medium', I'll bump it up to 'Hard'. This, of course, is in regards to whenever I play a game for the first time.
For example, I personally think Halo or Halo 2 should be played for the first time on the second to highest difficulty (forgot what it's called but the one just before 'Legendary').

Not sure if you're just asking this rhetorically, but you can still have 5.1 surround on your Xbox without the HD pack. I believe it's called the Advanced pack and supports 5.1 optical with S-video.

I meant it mainly as a goof that the guy has a 5.1 system & doesn't even have it hooked up to his Xbox. That is just insane. It was one of the main reasons I chose the Xbox as my only game system back when it came out.

Josh H 04-07-05 11:52 AM

In all honesty, only a handful of X-box games I've played take full advantage of the 5.1. Most games sound about the same to me as the PS2 and GC ones on my system which are just hooked up via pro logic I.

It's a shame more developers haven't taken full advantage, b/c it kicks ass in games like Halo that use it well.

maxpower 04-07-05 05:26 PM

How many levels in the campaign? I know the coop has about 20.

You have only obviously played a handful of Xbox games.

Josh H 04-07-05 05:33 PM

I haven't played a ton as the game lineup doesn't match my tastes well, but off the top of my head..

Halo
Halo 2
Splinter Cell
Panzer Dragoon
Madden (2 or 3 years of them)
NFL2K4
NBA2K4
KOTOR
Beyond Good & Evil
Dead or Alive 3
Soul Calibur 2
MVP Baseball 2004
and probalby a couple I'm forgetting.

Of those, only the Halo's really used the 5.1 sound well IMO. Most the other games didn't take much advantage of seperate rear channels and just sounded like clearer pro-logic sound for the most part.

But I'm far from an audiophile and probably not as keen on the differences as most, so I probably only notice in a game like Halo that uses it well and for gameplay relevent purposes.

Friend of mine managed to buy a 32" LCD HDTV last week. He purchased Doom 3 CE and we got the HD AV Pack. It looks really good.

At that size, Sony's CRT (tube) TV's are unmatched and display the best pictures for videogames. However, they're heavy and take-up a lot of room behind them unlike the LCD, DLP, and LCoS sets.

Edited to add:
All I'm saying is, the developers did a great job with pushing the Xbox graphics capabilities (nVidia chip) and a tube TV will really show how good it looks.

msdmoney 04-08-05 01:05 AM

Played this for about 20-25 minutes at EB today, wasn't too impressed. Wasn't as blown away by the graphics as I expected to be, maybe the TV was just crappy. I will probably get this for the new computer I am buying soon just to test out the video card. Maybe it was just me but I felt like the creatures/people didn't react or reacted awkwardly when I shot them. After playing RE4 I was used to every place I hit affecting the enemy differently, the enemies in Doom 3 just seemed to be moving blocks. Maybe I didn't play long enough, I will give this game another chance on a new computer.

KingSmoth 04-08-05 02:37 AM

I'm a huge DOOM fan, so I had to buy the CE. I'm probably 7-8 hours in, and I love it. The game is bringing back all the old memories of playing DOOM at 2am with the lights out.
The hallucinations are a nice touch, similar to Eternal Darkness. The darkness, tight quarters and almost deathly silence create a very intense atmosphere. The complaints regarding these aspects of the game baffle me - the base level design is similar to DOOM, not to mention the fact that the first two games were dark also. The only noted difference to me is that DOOM 3 has toned down the action with smaller skirmishes in favor of creepy atmosphere, as opposed to throwing hordes of enemies upon you at every turn(Suburbs in II being my favorite). The game is obviously intended for a single-player experience, as opposed to a crazed co-op slaughterfest.
I wish I had 5.1 and HDTV right now, because this game is beautiful...

My biggest complaint is that the gameplay never really changes. Your seventh hour playing is exactly like every preceding hour. Just too repetitive. You really can't understand that?
