On another tangent, the Tex Murphy games (at least Under a Killing Moon and The Pandora Directive) were a blast.

Personally, what killed the adventure genre on the PC were two things:
1) The ascent of DOOM (and other FPSes) as well as 3D hardware.
2) Full Motion Video. The companies sank too much money (and hype) into the technology before it was ready.

There was another game I use to play all the time on the Apple IIc. It was based on the Robin Hood story.
It was text-based (type your commands), was in first-person (you did not see your character), and very limited animation if any. Things I remember:
Talking to Friar Tuck.
Burning a pile of hay to find something within it.
Taking a green awning and giving it to the tailor to make an outfit
Talking to the Merry Men.
Seeing Little John on a log bridge.
Anyway, I think the title was "Sherwood Forest" and it may/may not be a Sierra title.
Oh, yeah! You could type in profanity and it would show you a screen of a mouth being washed with soap. LOL!
Anyone remember/play this?
Where can I find it?

I can't believe I'm the only one here who's played this one. It was pretty popular at the grade school I went to.

Anyway, the first Sierra adventure game I played was Mystery House on the school's Apple IIe's and I've been loving them ever since. Space Quest...King's Quest...Gabriel Knight...Leisure Suit Larry. Speaking of which, I was delighted to find a mint copy Leisure Suit Larry 7: Love for Sail (with Cyber Sniff 2000 card included!!
) at the local Goodwill for $2. I thought the old lady working the cash register wasn't going to let me have it for it a second; she gave me this really ugly look.

The King's Quest series were a lot of fun, bad puns and all. And some of the humor were clearly Infocom influenced. King Graham was notoriously bad when it came to water. In the VGA remake of KQ1 (not the fan made one, but the Sierra version), if you dived into the well and typed "drink water," it would respond something along the lines of: "No matter how quickly you drink this water, there is still more than enough water for you to drown in." Gotta love the cartoony expression of Graham as he flapped around helplessly in water.

Amazon.com is listing upcoming compilations of the four most popular Sierra classic adventure series: King's Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, and Police Quest running under Windows XP.
They will apparently be available on October 11 for $19.99 each.
Kinda neat to be able to buy these again and not have to fiddle with getting them run in XP if this proves true.

I remember these well. Another series I enjoyed (published by Westwood, not Sierra I think) was the Legend Of Kyrandia series. Similar to King's Quest in some ways, with some very nice (for the time) VGA graphics.

I was always more of a lucasarts fan myself - but there were several Sierra titles I got a lot of enjoyment out of...Rise of the Dragon, Freddy Pharkus, Gabriel Knight.
I remember them making a big deal about going out and building a high tech movie studio that was supposed to change the adventure game forever. I believe their first video title was Phantasmagoria. Horrible game. Certainly changed the adventure game...

Yeah Phantasmagoria definately did suck, I was trying to recall a game the other day and kept thinking it was that, but then remembered it was 7th Guest and 11th Hour...I want to play Beast Within, but it looks like it is a bitch to run on XP, wish they would repackage the series.

I ran The Beast Within without any problems in WinXP. It's the Sins of the Fathers that's a really pain in the butt to try to run in WinXP, but I used this installer and it worked fine: http://www.gabrielknight2k.tk/
They also have an installer for The Beast Within that lets you install the full game to your hard drive, as opposed to having to swap discs which does get annoying.

I actually enjoyed Phantasmagoria but yes it did have some issues that needed ironing out. Maybe if these sell well they will do Quest for Glory, Gabriel and others.
