Personally, I thought it was just about right. You could do it on the Regenerators as well as the spike-covered versions, and it probably would have gotten a little old if I had to do it any more than I did.

BTW when you get to the regenerators the best way to kill it is to shoot out it's legs from under it. Then just wail away with a shotgun or something equivilent.
You must have lucked out, then. If you blow their legs off, they end up doing this freaky lurching lunge thing that propels them through the air at you. It's damn weird to see, and pretty unnerving the first time it happens, since you're expecting them to just lie there.

For weapons first time through I skipped the bolt action rifle, you don't really need one until the semi auto is available.
Maybe not, but it sure makes the tram ride before Bittores a whole lot easier. My first run through, I did what you did, but ended up going back to the merchant for the rifle after repeatedly dying at that part.

I got the first shot gun and didn't really upgrade it and passed on the riot gun to go right for the striker. That way I could save some money. Definately get the free broken butterfly and upgrade it whenever you can. It will become your boss killer. Some people think there is too little ammo for the magnum but I actually got a ton of it by killing all the little parasites on the bottom level while fighting the short dude (forgot his name.)
As far as the magnum goes, it appears that the game only starts giving you ammo for it once you actually have one. I didn't even bother with the magnums my first time through (forgot to go back to where the freebie is after I got Ashely) because I was waiting for the game to start spawning ammo before I dropped the cash on yet another gun.

You definitely don't need the thing, though, as the money you save on Magnum upgrades can go to upgrading your other weapons.

And I ended up preferring the Riot Gun to the Striker, as well. The Striker has a good rate of fire, but the shot spreads out way too much for me.

The short dude is Napolean. That's close enough for me.

No they don't. It is not freaky at all is is definately the best way to kill them. They just lay there once you shoot out their legs so you can walk right up to them and knife them in the head. Especially for someone going through it for the first time. Right?

And I had difficulties as well on the Tram area. Luckily I had the red 9 with the stock which made it possible. I did have to use the shotgun on the last group though. This took forever for me to do though. Kept getting hit and wanting to restart it.

Are you sure you're talking about the Regenerators? Because I had the same experience as xVladx: after taking bout the legs, they lunged foward while on the ground and attacked. This freaked me out the first time it happened, because I figured that it wouldn't really do anything while on the ground.

Yes, I'm sure. It is the regenerators the big lumbering gray colored anatomically incorrect monsters in the later third of the game. The best way to kill them is to shoot out their legs and knife them in the head. Come on people don't you remember? They certainly don't start flopping around. Those who haven't yet made it to that part yet certain members of the dvdtalk community seem to be trying to steer you wrong. Trust me. Would I lie to you? :)

Oh, I was thinking of the guys earlier in the game. Haven't played the game in ages, so I couldn't remember the names. Thanks tanman! :)

I know that you can get the Handcannon by obtaining a 5* ranking (60000+ points) on all maps with all characters in the Mercenaries game.

My question is this:

How do keep track of which characters has beaten each map with a 5* ranking? I don't see any where on the screen that keeps track of this.

Do I have to manually write down that I've beaten the Villages map with Wesker, Leon, etc. with a 5* ranking?

Matt 03-13-06 09:54 AM

Once you select your character, you'll go to the Stage Select screen, and on the pictures of the four stages, there are little bars which show how many stars you've gotten with that particular character on that stage.

No need to write anything down--but you will have to go in and look at each character's stage select screen to figure out what you have left.

I noticed that last night when I played. Thanks.

I've concluded that there is NO WAY I will be able to get a 5* ranking with Hunk. He just doesn't have the firepower to take out the big guns on the Castle and WaterWorld board.

Yeah, Hunk's a bit tricky to use. IIRC, you pretty much have to rely on grenades for the big enemies on those maps. Get good at using neckbreakers for the smaller enemies. I had a lot of luck with firing a stream of TMP shots at head level across a bunch of enemies at close range, which would end up stunning most of them. Then, since I had the action button held down fro shooting anyway, I'd end up going straight into a neckbreaker. It may not seem as efficient as using just the TMP, but it actually ends up being quicker (and any enemies nearby when you do a neckbreaker end up getting pushed back, too).

When using grenades on the big enemies in the castle, remember that you can only hurt them from behind, so you need to make sure that any grenades don't explode in front of them. Also, once they're stunned from the first grenade blast, you can unload a good amount of TMP shots into their back if you're in a good position to do so.

As far as those double-bladed chainsaw guys go, you need more of a hit and run approach, since damaging them doesn't really slow them down. It helps to know where they tend to appear, too.

Matt 03-15-06 09:13 AM

The nice thing about the Waterworld level is that it's got a great little spot on top of one of the structures where they can only come at you from one direction, and it's got a great escape route in the zip line. I took advantage of this spot with not only Hunk, but with all the other characters. I'd run around the level, picking up as much time and ammo as possible, and when I'd trigger the double-chainsaw guy (depending on where he spawned), I'd high-tail it for my little camp-out spot. He'd usually take a while to jump up there, and I'd have plenty of time to unload the TMP into him. Once he got close, a grenade or two would usually take him out, and in case it didn't, I'd still have the zip line I could escape with. He couldn't follow, giving me plenty of time to regroup.

Great tip dude.

I'll definitely try that tactic.

Any suggestions for the Village board using Hunk? There's not much room to run around on that level and the villagers come out in droves. I usually try and make a stand on the second level of the barn, but usually run out of ammo.

Matt 03-15-06 11:11 AM

I'm like you in that invariably, I would always wind up in the top of that barn, as it's really the only place that you can't be gotten in that level. No matter where you start, run around and grab as much stuff (time/ammo/health) as possible. After I'd do that, I'd usually go to that single-level barn (where the cow was in single-player), try to group as many of them there as I could, and then blow them up with the barrel. After that, I'd run to the two-story barn, climb up the ladder, knock it down, and wait. Once I got a lot of 'em in there, I'd open the chest for bonus time/points, and shoot the barrel, which would take a lot of them out.

After a while, you should have multiple chainsaw wenches in there (I think I've had as many as four in there at one time) and although it's kind of nerve-racking, it's also good, as they're worth (I think) 10,000 points each. I'd usually let them climb the ladder a little, then I'd knock it down, and unload into them before they got back up. I'd toss grenades at them every so often, too.

If you get to a point where there's some time left and you're not at 60,000, and it's clear, you might hop down, put the ladder back up, and run out of the barn to spawn some more bad guys, picking up ammo along the way. Then hustle back to the top of the barn and repeat the process until time runs out. If you've hit 60,000 and you're out of ammo, you might as well just stay there, unless you're going for a high score. Keep kicking the ladder down, and there's no way they can get you, except for the occasional thrown hatchet. :)

I actually stayed in the barn across from where you make a stand (like the previous poster said, the one that has the cow in the main game). I found that if I tried to stay on that second floor, it was more difficult to pick up ammo/grenades/herbs. In the "cow" barn, I'd just stay in the corner, try to stun the villagers with shots to the head, and neck break a few of them. Mainly though, I'd stun a big group and take them all out with a grenade. The villagers that died usually dropped a grenade or two, so I never ran out.

xVladx 03-16-06 12:39 PM

Another thing to keep in mind is that you can do a neckbreaker on the chainsaw women. I would always hold onto a flash grenade (Hunk can get flash grenades, right? It's been a while..) and wait for them to come out. Once they were both in range, I'd stun them with the grenade, then run and neckbreak them both.

So I finally got the handcannon and the Chicago Typewriter.

The game is so easy it's not even fun. Anyone know how I can switch to the professional level WITHOUT having to play the game from scratch?

Also, when do I get an Ashley panty shot? :hump:

if you think this game isn't fun then you don't like any games ever! you can't switch and Ashley only shows cooty if you like the game enough. sorry!

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "without having to play the game from scratch." Are you saying you want to switch to professional level in the middle of a normal level game?

I've beaten the game twice already and have the hand cannon and the Chicago typewriter in my arsenal.

I want to play the game with the professional mode on because the enemies are harder to kill. However, when I start the game on professional mode, I start with only my hand gun, some ammo and a first aid spray.

eatntae 03-31-06 01:33 PM

Ah, I get it. I think you're going to have to start all over again without your Chicago typewriter and handcannon, because that's what I had to do. But it doesn't even really make a difference if you plan on playing through Professional with those 2 guns. The ganados are harder to kill with regular weapons, but still go down with one shot of the handcannon or typewriter. Sure, the enemies do more damage to you, but it still makes little difference if you're mowing them down with those weapons and they don't have a chance to get close to you.

TheMadMonk 03-31-06 01:49 PM

Yes, (Handcannon and/or Chicago Typewriter) + Professional mode = Really, really easy. Be a man, play through Pro from scratch.

Finally picked this up as a "greatest hits" title for the Cube. Great game. I especially loved the bosses and the variety of enemies.

Somewhere, I'd gotten the idea that it had the same old RE control scheme, but the third person interface feels great. Aiming is intuitive and accurate...and I love taking dudes out at the knees.

Finished it in a few days on regular mode without too much difficulty (maybe could have been a bit harder?)...and am cruising through with the infinite launcher and the striker now just for fun.

I may have to do the Ada thing and get the machine gun...just to play through with that.

eau 04-03-06 03:10 PM

Is the RE4 premium edition (PS2) worth picking up? I saw a new one for $49.99 at a store.

Technically it does. What actually changed is the camera.

Any new info on RE5?
