The Age of Empires series & Empire Earth are basically real-time versions of Civilization, and a lot of the concepts in both games are from Civ, though the AOE games focus on smaller periods of human history (AOE1: ancient civs, AOE2: from the fall of Rome to the late medieval period, AOE3: colonial period).
I see. So Age of Empires and Empire Earth would be very similar. But Age of Empires focuses on one time while Empire Earth focuses on human evolution like Civ?

This thread is in dire need for a bump, considering the release date is less than two months away (October 18th) and a shitload of new screen shots have been released.

The link in the original post of this thread has many new shots (including the one below), and the official website has many as well (link here.)

And now to blow your mind...

Thanks! I was about to go looking for some information on this game, as I was wondering when it would be released, but you answered my question.

Since someone asked, here's the 12 tribes:
Lakota, Seminole, Tupi, Maya, Nootka, Iroquois, Cree, Commanche, Aztec, Inca, Cherokee, Caribs.

You'll also notice some tribes have better units than others. That is due to the fact that each tribe also have unique techs. Native techs are generally VERY helpful, and some tribes might have some better than others.

My preview of the game just went up here. I've been playing it nonstop for the past week. The build I received features only 10+ missions from the first campaign, in addition to the skirmish mode. The campaign is pretty good, but since my history with the AOE series lies mostly in playing multiplayer, the skirmish mode is where I've spent most of my time. Unfortunately, the build has a number of bugs which are hindering my gameplay, but it's finished enough where I can safely say that this is one of the best games of the year, and is easily the best of the franchise.

Sweet! Are the graphics as impressive as the screenshots make them appear?

They weren't on my machine, but I'm using a Radeon 9800XT without some of the lighting capabilities that are part of the game. I was unsure of whether it was just me or the build I played, but after checking, it seems that it's the former, meaning I need to upgrade.

That said, even on my computer the graphics were substantially improved from AOE3's predecessors.

EDIT: Sweet, this post put me at 3000 posts. I've gone Platinum, baby!

johnglass,

Thanks for that summary on the Native Amer. civilization.

If all the civilizations/cultures are this detailed, the game is going to be tough to master.

I hope my PC can handle this game.

It'll take time, but it's not terribly more difficult than Age of Mythology, where you not only had to know the civilizations' unit attributes, but also the powers/advantages/disadvantages of a particular god. With repeat play of AOEIII you should be able to pick up on all the civs without too much trouble (especially if you're an AOE regular).

As the thread starter, I'm still patiently waiting for this game to come out. I really hope I don't have to upgrade my video card to play it. I may have to start playing some games of AoM on-line again to practice.

BJacks stating that his Radeon 9800 wasn't enough to handle the game is a bit disappointing. I guess there's no hope for my GeForce3 Ti 200?

I wouldn't worry yet. I said my Radeon 9800 couldn't handle some of the enhanced graphics options, but it ran the game just fine and still managed to make it look fantastic. It just wasn't able to get it up to the quality of the screenshots. It looked considerably better than Age of Mythology, though.

FYI, the demo requires Windows XP or later. Doesn't work with Windows 2000 or ME or 98. That information would have been useful before I downloaded the 350MB file. Bummer. Might be time for a new computer soon.

If your computer can't handle XP, then I doubt it could handle most of the newer games out there. Certainly not something as powerful and graphics-intensive as AOE3.

Damn, now I want to leave work early to download the demo. Guess I'll have to wait till tonight to get it. It'll be interesting to see how my PC can handle it. Seems like yesterday I was wowing my friends with UT2K4 with all video's settings maxed out. Now I'm out dated.

The demo unfornuately won't work on my PC. The installer said my PC is missing the SSE instruction set or something. I don't know what it is because I don't know tech stuff. Because of that though, it won't even install on my PC.

Here's a workaround for 2000 posted on an another forum,

AOE3 Windows 2000 Workaround!

1. Start aoe3trial.exe

2. It creates a new folder (_is(and some number)) at

"C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\<aktueller Benutzer>\Lokale Einstellungen\temp"
(Don't know what this is with an english Win2k...Maybe C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\temp)

3. Wait for the error message

4. Copy the "Age of Empires III Trial.msi" from the mentioned Temp folder to C:\

5. Rename the file to ao3.msi

6. Go to the command console (START>RUN>cmd) and type:

Quote:

msiexec /a C:\ao3.msi /qn TARGETDIR="C:\blah"

Wait a few moments.
7. Start C:\blah\Age of Empires III\age3.exe

SSE is something that comes with processors. Forgot what it stands for, the E is for extension. It means you've got a processor, prolly an older one that doesnt have SSE so you wont be able to play it at all.
