I just HAVE to let them know who was here

The Water Hazard is superb. Absolutely fun. Game of the year.

By the way, when my health is 100%, I pick up one of the health packs and carry it with me.That way I'll have one on hand. I just have to remember to throw it down because I can't use any weapons while holding it.

Looks fine at 1024x768 - I don't get all the effects, but most of the cool stuff does show. I'll have to play through this again once I upgrade my rig. Your biggest weakness right now is that cpu actually... but it should play fine.

I also have tried playing this on a Dell server

Win2000 pro
1.5ghz P4
512MB Ram
GeForce 2 gts

Plays okay, but wouldn't want to go through the entire game on it.
yeah the big problem is if i upgrade my cpu, to make any sort of decent upgrade i need a new mobo. and that would bascially mean i need to build a new rig. i dont really want to do that.

After some searching, looks like this is a common problem. A few people could get by this by going to the console and starting at the train station. I was able to play for a little minute or so but then it locked up again. I am guessing that my RAM is part of the problem (256) but othe issue is that even though I have the most recent drivers for my video card (NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go) it still comes up when I start the game that my drivers are out of date. Oh well, will hopefully have a new computer by Jan. 2005 if I can wait that long.
I keep replying to myself but want others to see this in case they are having the same problem. I have seen some people say that a defrag of the hard drive fixed their HL2 issues. I went ahead and did this and guess what, the game plays. I still have my settings on low and there are still a lot of problems in some places with the game slowing down but it is playable. I should wait until I get a new machine b/c having the detail set so low and the slow downs cuts into some of the enjoyment of this game but I don't think I can wait months to play it. So anyone having issues with the game should defrag their hard drive. It took HL2 from a game that crashed every 30 seconds to a playable game that has not crashed once with about an hour of game play. Hope that helps some people.

Spoiler:
I wasn't expecting G-man to come out like that
I wasn't expecting it either. That part was weird, but cool at the same time. I think it fit with the rest of the game and the way the series has gone so far. Can't wait for more.

I just finished it and I thought the ending was really kewl.

Spoiler:
It ended somber, because in the moment of triumph you're ripped away from the character(s) that you've grown to love.

Hell of an ending to the best PC game I've ever played.

Well, CS:Source does use the HL2 engine...so in a sense, there's multiplayer.

...and damn good multiplayer at that.

I would assume so. I'm sure mod-makers can make their own maps anyway, so it's not like multiplayer is as lacking as people are making it out to be. There just isn't a deathmatch mode like in the original Half-Life, which wasn't all that good anyway.

Ketamine - I have a laptop with a Geforce Go 460 64 megs of ram. Does your system have 32 or 64? Also, there is a great website for modded INF files to get updated NVIDIA drivers to work. http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/.

I am considering buying this game, but I would like to know how it runs on your laptop. Is it playable?

Just finished the Black Mesa East level - about 1/3 of the way through, I think.

The game is quite good - the graphics are so good that you almost get numb to really nice-looking scenery. The weapons feel great - perhaps the best weapon set in any recent FPS. They feel powerful and effective, yet balanced. The story line is slowly progressing, with a very dark atmosphere.

I'm quite pleased that the game isn't as icky as Half-Life 1. Thanks to lots of outdoor scenes, I find that I'm spending a lot less time creeping around dark corridors, looking into every nook for headcrabs or barnacles. Of course these things are still here and unchanged (except much better-looking), but somehow they're not as shock-inspiring. I actually had a hard time finishing the first one for that reason.

Also, so far the game is easier - no need to conserve every bullet and health point as with HL1 and most "survival horror" games. As a result, I'm spending less time duplicating effort to pass a particular encounter, and more time having fun.

One sharp criticism: There are quite a few bugs that make this a frustrating experience. The sound stutters a lot (on my 3.2GHz P4!) The controls are occasionally laggy. Steam completely sucks for content delivery and authentication. And the load times seriously interrupt the experience - sometimes it takes 15 seconds to load the next stage of a level. It's kind of shameful that a game of this calibre that spent so long in development has so many distracting quirks.

It has some bugs and slow load times, but it more then makes up for it, IMO.

would i be allowed to sell my steam account on here? it's a legit store bought copy and after you use the key on steam you can't use it on another steam account so you have to sell the whole account. It is the retail from target and i would be able to send the cd's if the person wants them. please let me know someone so that i can try. The game was great but i don't think i'll be playing through it again nor worrying about mods and i don't like Counter Strike.

Yeah, that's another reason why Steam sucks. If I buy a CD install of a game, it's my property, and I can hock it on eBay for fair value.

The more I think about it, the more I hate the Steam concept.

I'm really digging it. I've had zero problems (except for the friends network).

I think you may be overlooking some of the positives. For instance Valve can't sell you another copy now just because you lost or scratched the discs that the software came on.

I agree that you should be able to transfer your liscense to another person though.

Agree on selling / transfer - apart from that Steam rocks.. And I do kind of understand why you cant, because it could be abused like h*ll..

64. Actaully, after playing it more over this weekend, it is very playable though I am on the lowest settings. It does take a while to load but once it starts to play, there is very little slow down. At times when there is a lot of audio, it will slow down. If you want to play and the pretty graphics are secondary, then I am guessing that you will be happy you bought the game. My laptop will tide me over until I get a new computer. This game is great. Go get it.

Got the game. It runs great on my laptop (2ghz processor, 512 ram, 64 meg Geforce 460go 64 meg) all under directx 7. Then I saw it run on a Directx9 machine. WHOA. There are some comparison shots on pc.ign.com as well as http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2281

Talk about a big difference! Too bad I can't afford a new rig. Either way, the game is enjoyable. Its like playing in a movie.

I spent some time on the laptopvideo2go site trying different drivers. There doesnt seem to be a huge difference for me. Oh well.

Ok, enough talk. Back to HL2

The sound stuttering thing is happening to a LOT of people. I'm sure a patch will fix it. Good news

As for the ending..

Spoiler:
It kind of sucks... but at the same time, makes so much sense. The G-Man owns you. After Half Life, he "hired" you, and made you his. He teleported you somewhere, freezing you in time (which is why you don't age from the time until Half Life 2) and when he needs you again, what does he do? You teleports you onto that train in City 17. Then, as soon as you've completed your task, what doe he do? he freezes you again. He'll wake you up next time you're needed.
