Presenting (drum roll) the PSP! ($195)

Check out this IGN story and this gamespot story.

Essentially (if you're lazy( it'll be out this year in Japan for $185-195 for the basic pack and $230 for a complete pack with all the bells and whistles (case, headphones, remote etc). Battery life is 4-6 hours and move life is 4-5 hours. This will be longer if you dim the screen. There be a bunch of games at launch. Yadda yadda yadda.

Damnit... I might have to buy one at that price.

EDIT:Here are all the accessory pics

Do we know for sure if there is going to be region coding on them? I liked how I was able import a GBASP when it came out in Japan, and play all the US titles on it. If this is the case, I'll be importing one of these in Dec also.

Nintendo does not region code their portables.

I think the PSP will be because of the PSP's ability to play "movies" <snicker>,

Anyone want to bet me $20 the PSP doesn't do 5-6hours? Afterall, its the developers fault if the battery doesn't make it to Sony's advertised length.

Good news.. still nothing in the software line-up for me. Battery life is low, but manageable.

Nintendo must not be pleased to hear this. This definitely changes the demographics for PSP users from when it was thought to cost $300.......

For $195 you get so much more! Gaming, Movies, Music and other goodies! I'll easily buy one! Regarding the battery life....I'll buy an extra one! If it means I can play a game then turn on a movie, you have one fantastic handheld device!

The $195 price point is good news, but battery life is still a disappointment. And I'm still utterly oblivious as to why someone would pay for a movie in a format that can only be played on this device. Why? And why are you so happy to throw more money at Sony to buy a second battery pack just so you can do so?

Does anyone know the price range the games will be? I heard they'd be $50 somewhere, but that can't be right, can it?

I have np buying another movie format....for a rare few movies. I take flights at least twice a month...I use my laptop to watch movies sometimes but it's just too big to have on the small tray and people are always checking it out....So I would rather have a smaller screen with the movie. I would buy maybe 4 movies a year....not like my DVD collect where I buy 120+ DVD's per year.

I'm sure that's what SONY is thinking, people don't want to lug around a laptop to play a movie. Portable DVD players are great...but they take up room and don't play games

So for me the PSP is the perfect device for the mobile warrior

Let the fight begin.

I knew they would do that. Undercut everyone's expectations. I didn't think they could but I guess they can and will. I knew that if they announced the price before the DS came out it would be lower than what people thought it would be. If it was $300 than they would probably let that information fly afterwards.

Personally, I'm still getting a DS. IMHO I trust Nintendo to put out really solid hardware which is much more important in a portable system. That and the fact that their first party titles are second to none will keep me faithful.

I've always said I'd get both, both $200 is easier to swallow then $300. However, those are Japanese prices...not American. Don't be surprised if they jump.

Wow...well, I stand corrected. That's a very competitive price point.

I still cannot believe they will turn a profit (I thought the LCD screen alone should have pushed the price up to the 300 range) but hey, more power to them.

I'm still not getting one, as the only advantage I see over the DS is the ability to play movies, but since I have to buy another copy (and how much do we think those are going to be?) it's completely useless to me in that regard.

So on the official page (japanese) they have a pic of the PSP with some icons on it. One for music, pictures, movies, and games, but what is that first icon of the car? Am I missing something? Does this thing have GPS?

I heard that it might have GPS as another accessory....

That looks like a tool box...I'm guessing its for hardware options.

Not bad, but still $100 or so more than I'd ever consider paying for a portable gaming system.

I don't have anything to back this up but isn't usually the other way around? I thought that the PS2 was around $330 in Japan and $300 in the US at launch.....

$45 dollars for a battery is very common. Have you seen digital camera battery prices? Laptop ?
