I'm sure there is a large number of people that have dying PS2s at this point, this is a good chance for them to get a new one. I can't say from experience as I just got mine this year and have had no problems with it.. but when the PSone came out, I knew a good number of people who bought (or wanted to buy) one simply because their original unit barely worked. There are probably a lot of hot sales from the "tech geeks" that got to have the coolest, newest toys.

I fall into both categories.

My PS2 took a dump a while back, no longer playing any DVD-based software (games or movies).

No big deal, because I haven't been interested in any PS2 exclusives for the past year or so, so I've been playing everything on XBox or the GameCube.

But with GTA coming out, I originally decided I was gonna buy a new (old model) PS2 to play it on, but then in the past couple of months I decided that I was just gonna wait for the XBox version next year.

Of course, though, they have to release this "new and improved" model, and since I'm a junkie for the latest and greatest electronics stuff, I'm gonna have to buy a new one, along with GTA.

And I'm sure I'll be buying San Andreas for the XBox again next year, too.

Terrific.

Went in to pick up my copy of Paper Mario today and walked out with it and a new PStwo. They only got in one at Game Rush so I'm glad I was able to get it.

This thing really has to be seen up close to realize how small it is. Anyway, I'm happy to have found it.

It has two little spots in the back for screws like the PSone, so the portable screen for it is probably in the works at Sony.

Sure it will if you get one of the programs that will allow you to copy your game to the hard drive.

Ran DVDs on it tonight for about three hours straight. Got warm, but not what I would call hot. Don't think there is a big overheating danger with it, but I'll try it again with games.

BTW, it has the same PS2 boot up and menu as the bigger consoles in case anyone wondered. It runs very quiet unlike the bigger version. It also has the IR port built in, DVD-R support and progressive scan. (That was probably already covered)

Thanks, I was wondering about the progressive scan feature. I've been thinking about getting a PS DVD player. Maybe I'll just get one of these instead.

all those things are great... one of my big complaints w/ the ps2 and xbox is that they're both quite noisy.

i got the ps2 at launch... what 3 years ago? too bad they won't die! otherwise, i'd pick up the new ps2 and the rumored smaller form factor xbox.

darkside, I'm not sure if you can check this or not.. but can you see how the machine tells if the lid is closed or not? On the PS1 and PSone there was a small button in the drive and the lid had a small plastic piece that pushed it down while it was closed.

I looked all around and can't find the switch that tells it the lid is closed. There are three plastic pieces that I thought might be it, but could not find a button to trigger the lid.

There is a piece of the right hinge that I believe may make the contact to tell the system the lid is closed. If so this will be difficult to mod for imports without taking it apart.

I took a few pics on my crappy digital camera of the PStwo compared to the PSone. Basically its a bit longer, but a tad thinner. My Psone is a bit thicker than normal due to the screen though. I thought the new design was pretty ugly at first, but up close its not that bad at all. I definitely like it better than the normal PS2.

darkside, thanks for checking!!

I'll have to check some "scene" (shudder) sites to see if anybody has tested it with the boot discs yet.

I gave a thought about being greedy and putting mine on ebay, but I wanted the console more than the extra $50 or so it will go for the first month or so its out.

This always happens when new hardware comes out and is in short supply. What sucks is there are so many professional ebay sellers out there a lot of consoles were probably bought up just to be resold instead of going to gamers that wanted them.

I dont know why, there are like 10 stores in the NYC area that either have some instock or are getting some within a week (according to Gamestop).

Yeah, but I live in Podunk not NYC so finding stuff is harder. I agree though if people would be a bit more patient they could find it without getting poked on Ebay.

I got mine in the mail yesterday. I played Battlefront until 1 am. I have never owned a PS2 (my roommate has one) but I have a Gamecube. Partial sound went out once after an explosion (I could hear all the other characters but my blaster was silent), and the frame rate slowed down to a crawl once. I attributed it just to a slight "glitch" than any system is suseptible to. At least I hope it wasn't the PStwo. This system hasn't turly been tried and tested yet. It was a little warm after playing for 4 hours straight. I guess that is expected. I like it. I love how compact it is. I may buy a service plan from EBgames just to be safe!

I've put in a lot of hours of ESPN NBA 2K5 and Grand Theft Auto Vice City and so far haven't had any glitches or lock ups. That's pretty good for Vice City. I've played it for several hours straight and the heat doesn't seem any worse than the PSone. So far I've tried booting up several old PSone games and all have started up fine.

I'm betting a few games may prove to not be compatible with it at some point (in addition to the PSone games we already know about) but so far so good.

Picked one up today from a Wal-Mart in Oklahoma City. They had probably two dozen, and had just gotten them in today.

Just got it all hooked up to test it out, and noticed something weird: It turned itself on and off again several times after I turned it off.

I'm not too concerned about it right now--I'm gonna give it a few days to get broken in, and if it's still doing it, back to Wal-Mart it goes. GTA:SA will be the big test, and I don't want it fucking up on me in the middle of the game.

Other than that, though, I'm pretty impressed with everything, even if it is four-year old technology.

Going out to get one today. Once I saw the picture of the unit just a little bigger than an original Xbox controller, I knew I must have one.

Looks like these are 'import friendly'. I am actually amazed that Sony didn't do more to protect them.

Just a note for those of you thinking about upgrading your PS2 to a PSTwo: EB is having a system trade in special. I got $100 for my PS2 (I think they are giving $100 for Xboxs too). That with the $10 for the BB Adapter and $2 for the remote (ouch!), its only going to cost me $38 for a PSTwo. Now I just have to wait until they get some in stock.

I got this today at my local Wal-Mart. They had about a dozen instock. It is going to be a christmas gift for my son so I am glad I did not have to go crazy in trying to find one. I just walked in and there they were. Makes you wonder why people are selling them on ebay for 200.
