So get with the program slacker.
I think he should just print it out on some saranwrap and then stick it to his monitor. More realistic that way.

Well, I've tried all three games now. I still don't like Qix or Star Castle, but Flicky is kinda fun. That'll probably be the only score I'll try to beat, even though I've got little to no chance. At least with Popeye I could get within 2,000 points of the high score.

That's basically what I've been doing too, but when I get one of the sides filled in I try to divide the top and the bottom that is still open. By that time it's usually close to or over 75% filled.

That's the same method I use. Also since you get 1k for every % over 75, that can be where a majority of your points come from. If you have time and you're gonna knock off 3/4 of the screen at once it can be good to fill in a little on the corner where you're planning to trap the Qix in before hand.

I think you can be good at Qix, but you need some luck to get high scores.

That'd probably be pretty easy now that you can get it in colors. He can just get some blue saran wrap and color a red and yellow circle in the middle.

Funny how unpopular games drive this thread to grow faster than before. Maybe next time I get to pick I'll choose something like Datsun 280ZZZap

The more I play Flicky, the more I want to play Sonic and just let the stupid birds die.

Hmmm. I thought I'd update to the latest version of Mame, and now when I open the program, it takes several minutes to scan through all of my roms and when I try to play anything it just crashes. Oops. I guess this is the best week for me to have messed it up, though.

try deleting your cfg and nvram files. Does it take several minutes every time you open it to scan the roms, or was it just the first time?

Oops, too late. I tried deleting all of the .ini files and then reinstalling version .86 and now I can actually open games, but there's no sound. I may just have to install into a fresh directory and then move over all the roms, artwork, samples, etc.

Also, it isn't doing the game search each time now. It probably wasn't saving the game list because it was crashing.

Edit: Ouch. The sound problem was just that the installation dropped my computers wav volume to zero.

I've had some broken-up sound issues myself. The play time on MAME32 .86 is broken too.

Well, I think I'm going to have to throw the towel in on Qix. And the one time I played Star Castle was already 1 time too many. I'm still hanging in there on Flicky, though. Made it up to 220000 last night, which is pretty good, I guess. It's a cute little game. It's funny, I'd never played it before, but remember looking at the genesis box for it, and thinking how lame it looked. Guess it goes to show how appearences can be deceiving.

Better than me. So far I've topped out at 170,000. I start running into problems at level 8 and haven't gotten past 11.

I played it again over my lunch break today, and for the first time, I caught all the little chickies in the first bonus round! WOo hoo! An extra 10000 for me!

I finally got past round 12 I guess it was, not 11. So I'm almost caught up to where PixyJunket was on his first try

I got to round 22, but my score isn't even close. Round 10 was my biggest roadblock so far.

If I didn't before, I can now say I truly hate Qix and Star Castle.

Just a reminder that you don't need to keep yourself up at night trying to retain your high score

and that your screenshot sucks

STAR CASTLE TIP: This might actually help everyone. It at least made the game a little more interesting to me. Anytime you destroy an entire ring, that ring regenerates. I didn't realize what was causing the rings to reappear. So you want to leave part of each ring in tact while you avoid oncoming fire. I was just shooting like crazy as you do in every other game like this, but that's not how Star Castle works.

What really sucks is that you just know Pixy is hoping one of us will beat his score because he already has a 600k screenshoot waiting to post

Argh. Another half hour spent this afternoon and I can't top 45k. Qix sucks!

On the positive side I did manage a personal best 94% clear on the first level. Unfortunately I can't see a way to easily duplicate it again.

At least you admit it. Devilshalo still insists that he actually likes Star Castle and that he didn't pick it because he knew he could win without having to try very hard
