Doom 3: It sucks

I thought I would never say this about an ID game, but this game is really a HalfLife clone, and the only saving grace is the graphics--which will be matched and overtaken by HL2.

I would have rejoiced if they came out with another shooter like their other games, and I would have even dealt with less-than graphics. But after playing this game for a few hours, it got way too boring. I felt like I was playing HalfLife all over again.

The plot was way too typical. Scientific experiments gone awry, everyone dies from their monster experimentation, mutants abound, and you are left to save the world.

The beginning of the game is just retarded. You're talking to people and even look for a PDA...wtf?

A much better beginning would have been to just drop you on the planet Mars, a little ammo, and no idea of what to do until you start progressing through the levels.

This is really one of those games you will either love or hate. I'm actually still looking forward to it. Half-Life had such a geat story that lent itself to the action and was so immersive, I don't mind if it's copied here. Id has never really been big on story anyway - they are all about creating atmosphere... that's where they shine. I'm sure with the lights off and the 5.1s on high, I'll crap my pants enough to make this worth a purchase.

People play FPSs for the story or is this one of those "I get Playboy for the articles" type thing

Doom 3 is awesome. I loved the beginning. Yes it resembles half Life, but that's a good thing. Too bad you gave up too early on a great game. maybe you just sucked at it, and are trying to feel better

"Story in a game, is like a story in a porn movie; it's expected to be there, but it's not that important." -- John Carmack on the first Doom.

I agree that it resembles Half-Life, but it's still great. I look forward to seeing what this engine can do in other games and mods in the future.

The thing that honks me off is that it's 10 bucks more than your average video game price. 60 bucks for a video game? To hell with that - and MSRP of anything more than 50, and I'm outta here.

I haven't played Doom 3, don't care for FPS games, but this is just a damn fine quote.

I enjoy Doom 3 for what it is; a classic "switch your brain to off" FPS with a great overall claustrophobic atmosphere.

The game is 35 bucks at GoGamer.com's 48 hour sale. Ends today.

As for the game... based on the screenshots i've seen Half Life 2's graphics don't come close to Doom 3's.

Anyway, no point in arguing about whether you should like the game or not, although i think your complaints are a bit trite

I didn't think that Doom 3's graphics were all that much more impressive than Far Cry. Maybe it's just because I can't see ANYTHING in Doom 3.

Whoa, people pay that much for games?

From what I understand, it's the same story as the first Doom, but they ahd the technology to actually expand upon it.

How can you say that Doom 3's story is a copy of Half-life's when Half-life's story is copy of the original Doom? All three games are about scientiets who open up a portal to another world, and the creatures there invade (though Half-lifes has a lot more twists). I haven't finished Doom 3 yet, but the stories don't seem that similar to me.

The presentation is very similar to Half-Life where the game starts out under "normal" conditions, and after a while the shit hits the fan and you have to fight your way through areas that you previously visited when they were more "pristine." They also feature recurring characters that pop up from time to time just out of reach, and who disappear before you can get to them.

Whereas the first Doom was just a blast fest. You wouldn't know the "story" unless you read the manual.

So that it'd be a Doom 1 clone (which it already is, really) instead of a Half-Life clone?

60 dollars for a game is a rip, but alas not as bad as 20 dollars for a atrategy guide for a fps game come on. First of all a strat guide can't make you shoot straight, but also this is a computer game you have access to a computer just look on the net.

Meh, i agree that Doom 3 was a let down.
I can't believe that in the far future they actually REMOVE flashlights from weapons....
