$300 with a 2-3 hour battery life is not a good start for Sony. Not sure this device will find a market.

I'm not convinced the DS is a great idea either, but it will probably be half the price and have a 10 hour battery life.

I'll just buy a portable dvd player, thanks.

If thats going to be the price, Sony will now exactly where to go from there, they just have to follow the footprints left behind by Nokia .

1) The $300 price is not even what most industry analyst are predicting.

2) The 2-3 hour battery life only applies to watching UMD movies. Gaming will be closer to 8 hours.

What are they predicting? $200? I haven't been keeping up on this stuff. Links?

PSP going be $500

I wouldn't be surprised if they come out at $300 ($299). There are talks of LCD screen shortages, and there are probably enough people willing to pay that amount. Remember the PS2. Enough people were willing to pay $299 for that, making it basically impossible to get at launch, and it had mostly average to terrible launch titles.

I would have taken the plunge at $200, MAYBE $250 if it came with something, but not $300. That's way too high for a portable.

Incidentally, what did Lynx come out at?

Pretty sure the Lynx was 149.99 at launch.

I bought one at TRU soon after launch. Went through the line with a Lynx (packaged with California Games and a AC adapter if I recall) and one game, probably Warbirds or Checkered Flag. Cashier rang them up and the total was like $60, as the Lynx was somehow ringing up at like $35. I bit my tongue, paid quickly, and dashed to my car. Looking back, I probably should have come back in and bought more, then started up ebay or this forum to trade the extras, after keeping what would eventually turn into 4 linked Lynxes for myself.

I had a Game Gear back in the day. I could score about 200 points per game on Joe Montana Football.

Instant doom for the PSP. With the base the GBA/SP already has at $100 (or less) a pop, there is no way PSP breaks significantly into the handheld market. No wonder Nintendo isn't worried. They shouldn't be.

I'm seriously thinking about getting the Nintendo DS. Not only is it backwards compatible with teh GBA, but it also will have a decent battery life and lots of new features that have a lot of potential (touch screen, voice recognition). The price of the DS will probably be at least half that of the PSP too.

1) Most industry analysts are saying between $300-$500. Most retail outlets are going the same direction.

2) It doesn't make sense that movies would drain battery life faster, as a game would push the system much harder than a movie. A game requires all parts of a system, CPU, GPU, disc drive, etc. where as the UMD disc movies should really only use the disc drive and some minor CPU power.


P.S. I don't care what PSPINSIDER.com claimed. They have zero reliabilty in my book.

I'm guessing the thought is that a movie must spin the disc constantly where as a game can load the information into the RAM.

Bingo. The spinning disc uses a lot more energy than the CPU ever will. The less the game developer has to pull of the disc during the game, the longer the battery will last.

As for PSPInsider, they are the best news source out there right now, and haven't gone wrong yet. Most people are looking at $200-$250 price range. $300 would be a death sentence and Sony knows that. They even admitted to taking a loss on the system. I'm guessing $200 personally.

That does make sense. Although with the graphic quality they're going for with the games, I don't think the amount of RAM would help it enough to extend the battery by 100% or more. I could very well be wrong on that though.

When I've opened the tray on my Playstation 1 or Gamecube, the game disc was always spinning.

Never checked on my Xbox or PS2 for obvious reasons.



BAH! I give up, I'm just going to wait until closer to launch when some final specs are released. All this trying to imagine how a piece of hardware will theoretically function makes my brain hurt.

My sony mindisc player can last 50 hours on a single AA because it minimizes the spining of the disc. I'm sure the PSP will do the same thing. 8 hours still seems far fetched though. The Clie has a similar big screen and only lasts about 4-5 hours with no discs spinning at all.

The PSP will have a lot more processor power being used plus the UMDs spinning. Its going to have to have a huge Li-Polymer battery to last 8 hours. Maybe the 8 hours will be with the screen backlight off.

No way. No way in hell. It does too much to sell at that price point.

If it is, it will follow the path of every other handheld machine that has gone up against Nintendo. As much as I want one, I wouldn't pay a penny more that $199 for it when SP's are $99.

As much as I'd like to own one, anything more than a $200 price tag and you can count me out. I truly believe that as cool as it looks, the price tag may ultimately kill it despite the nice looking games.
