What are you favorite Genesis games?
Well since I cleaned out all the good SNES games at the Gamestops around here due to their good sales (ie: trying to get the f* rid of these old games) I figured I'd run the gauntlet again and clean out the Genny stuff. Problem is, I was always a Nintendo boy, my friend had a Genesis so I got some exposure but my knowledge is not nearly up to speed.
Here are my favorites for the system:
Gunstar Heroes
Wonder Boy in Monster World
Flicky
Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force I/II
Streets of Rage 2
Ghouls and Ghosts
Phantasy Star III
So.. just wondering what are some good games, sleeper hits, etc.. so I can keep my eyes open this weekend.
I hate Sonic games.
16 Bits 4ever.

..forgot to mention I have a Master Base converter so I can play Wonder Boy, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, and Wonder Boy Dragon's Trap. So if you know any really good MS games, let me know too, though Gamestop doesn't even know what a Master System is..

Excellent choices. I just got Shadowrun on SNES, but I do recall the Genny version of that being MUCH better (at least, to Shadowrun nuts).

I always preferred the older Genesis versions to the modern PS2/Xbox hockey attempts. (and I agree, Mallrats was a good movie)
But I am amazed that the thread has gone this long and no one has mentioned Herzog Zwei.
I also loved Target Earth.

EA's hockey game was in Swingers though.

EA's NHL Hockey for Genesis was in Chasing Amy. I can undertand the confusion since it's the same director. And actor.
MY favorite Genesis games are/were:
Sonic- All the "real" Sonic games. 1-3, Sonic CD, Sonic & Knuckles. None of that Sonic 3D Blast or Spinball or anything.
Gunstar Heroes- Probably my favorite side scroller ever
Earthworm Jim -This was on SNES too, but for some reason I remember it being considered more of a "Genesis" game due to some factor)
Dynamite Headdy- Another game by Treasure. I never beat this one. It was quite a bit harder than Gunstar Heroes despite its lighter tone.
Ecco the Dolphin- A beuatiful, original game for its time. There really weren't many games around at the time where you weren't running and jumping and/or shooting things. A Fine example of how and why Sega were able to stand on their own during the 16-bit era by taking a few chances.

Most of my favourites have already been listed, but also try Ranger X. It's a remarkably polished side-scrolling, transforming robot action game. It was a late release in the lifetime of the Genesis, but the graphics and style were INCREDIBLE. You have to see it in motion to truly appreciate. I think it was made by a Brit developer, but it feels like it's a Treasure game (Gunstar Heroes). It's also incredibly hard.
Contra and Lightening Force (aka ThunderForce IV) were also extremely polished shooter games. TFIV had AMAZING, rousing music, on par with Streets of Rage 2 except more like rock than techno. It's also the only Genesis game that has graphics which could be mistaken for an upper tier SNES game. The other TF games get a lot of hype, but they didn't seem that great to me. Maybe because I played IV first.
My favourite games:
1. Streets of Rage 2
2. Thunderforce IV
3. Shadowrun
4. Landstalker
5. General Chaos (only with 2 player co-op)

Me and my dad (Who is a big Genesis fan himself) were always big on Granada. Kind of a free roaming overhead view tank shooter from the old Wolfteam company (Mainly known for their anime video Sega CD games such as Time Gal and Road Avenger).
BTW Pixy, I have a few SMS games in their original cases most with instructions. I got these about 14 years ago from a neighbor I knew who used to work for Tonka at the time. Some corporate guy. Anyway Tonka at the time was marketing the Master System till about the end of the 80's and he had every single SMS game released in the US and gave me a bunch. So I ran out and bought that Power Base converter. Really cool at the time, I was hooked on Phantasy Star and this other RPG whos name eludes me at the moment though....I think it was something Warriors. I can see why the system failed though, it was no match whatsoever for the NES. Of the 20 or so games I had at the time, I thought most of them were honestly pretty horrible. R-Type was pretty sweet though for a arcade port, not nearly as nice as the PC Engine version though.
