Avoid Vandal Hearts 2 at all costs, and go straight for the original.

But to blast a game for an incomprehensible story that's impossible to care about? That description covers at least half the RPGs coming out of Japan, easily.
And a gameplay-killing simultaneous attack mechanic? Gameplay-killing? How? Just because it's something different doesn't mean the gameplay was ruined... it's just exactly that: different.
The whole point of VH2 was to figure out how to counter each upcoming enemy movement. It was clear through the entire game which enemy would be the next to move, where he would move, and what he'd attempt once he got there. (Thus, I suppose if by "gameplay-killing", you actually mean "too much easier", I'd understand.)
Every review I had read gave off the impression you'd move to where some enemy had been, and he'd move to where you had been, and you'd both swing at air all game long. This couldn't be further from the truth.
These reviews had me avoiding VH2 like the plague until I saw it in the under $10 discount bin on one trip to the store and decided to take a chance on it. It turned out to be one of the best deals (from a brick and mortar store) that I've had in gaming.

Since X-Com should be a required experience for anybody who's played a videogame, a PSX collection should include it if you haven't played/will not play it on a PC.
Just have a book to read (literally) during the load times if you have the good fortune to find a copy.

One of the more recent US releases to check out is Gekioh. Its a great 2D vertical shmup akin to the Raiden series (And yes Raiden Project is well worth grabbing). Being a shmup freak I think I've managed to get every possible known shmup for the PSX...but I got the nagging feeling I am missing one or two. If you can play imports at all, I HIGHLY recommend Gradius Gaiden as its one of the greatest shooters ever and the best of the Gradius series IMO. It did to Gradius what Symphony of The Night did to Castlevania. I was always hoping at the time Konami would have followed this trend and given us Contra in the same over the top style. :/
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is a blast, just a great puzzle game.
Omega Boost can be found at Circuit City for $9.99 and is a very cool 3D shmup
Ridge Racer Type 4 is and always will be my all time favorite racer, I've seen this for like $5 at EB...a damn steal.
Poy Poy is a fun multi player game that my brother, dad and I used to play a lot.
Point Blank Trilogy with the Namco Guncons = BEST LIGHT GUN GAMES.....EVER. The Dig Dug and Galaga stages almost made me pee my Namco-lovin whore pants
PSX ranks just a little bit ahead of the C64 on my favorite console list. For some reason the PS2 just never did it for me, but I stored away 3 old PSX units so I'll be playing these great games when I am 80.

For the DC,
rpgs
Grandia 2
Skies of Arcadia
shmups
Zero Gunner 2 (import)
Mars Matrix
Ikaruga (import)
Bangai-o
fighting
Capcom v snk
SF 3 Third strike
Marvel v Capcom 2 (I personally don't like it, but it's still a good game)
project justice
Vampire Chronicles
everything else
Resident Evil Code Veronica
Shenmue 1 and 2 (you have to import the UK PAL edition for pt. 2, if you want the game w/english subs)
Virtua Tennis (there might be a sequel on the DC, but I'm not sure)
House of the Dead 2
Good luck finding these, cause most video game chains don't carry DC games anymore. The best places I could think of finding DC games may be independent video game stores, ebay, pawn shops, and maybe select gamestops.
