LucasArts has posted the announcement of cancellation of Sam & Max Freelance Police, planned as a sequel to Sam & Max Hit the Road, their classic adventure game (thanks Quboid). Word is:

"After careful evaluation of current market place realities and underlying economic considerations, we've decided that this was not the appropriate time to launch a graphic adventure on the PC" says Mike Nelson, Acting General Manager and VP of Finance and Operations. There is currently no plan to reduce staff.

Well this sucks, the only other game I was interested in from LucasArts get cancelled. The other being Full Throttle.
They were probably going to be too action oriented anyway, though it does refer to this one as a graphic adventure.

I know someone who works at LA.. I'll try to confirm with him. :(

That sucks, but it figures. For some reason adventure games just aren't seen as a profitable market any more. It is a real shame too, there were some fantastic adventure games back in the day. Now all we get are first person shooters, since it seems most developers (or marketing) is pushing 'THE LATEST IN UBER GRAPHICS'.

But good graphics and violence = Good Game.

Ofcouse! Or in the case of GTA = Bad Graphics, Watered Down Story, Controversial Subject, and Violence = Good game. But that is another topic...

This was only game I was looking forward to on the PC. This might also mean the end of this genre for the time being, so no sequel to Monkey Island or Grim Fandango :(.

That sequel would've ruled, and sold like crazy.

Is LucasArts just imploding? I mean they canned Full Throttle and now this? They sure like to stick with the star wars brand though. No way will anything that bares that name get canned.

I actually never played this game but loved Full Throttle and would love to see more similar adventure games now that every game that comes out seems to be a FPS.

I agree about the star wars thing though, maybe if they just kept the same game intended for Sam and Max and added Star Wars characters it would get a release.

I will NOT buy any LA's games until this comes out... this was the ONE game I was waiting for. SAM AND MAX was the best game ever and I have been waiting for a new one. Someone needs to pay for this....!

I called LA and they said to send emails to [email protected] and they will forward any comments or hatemail (well just comments probably) to their manager. Doubt it would help but it cant hurt to try.

So sad :( I loved the original and have kept checking back on the Lucas Arts website for new on the new game. Even have the trailer saved on my computer. Dang it, I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

Sad that these are the types of people deciding what games get made. I guess that's why they call it a business though. Oh well.

Fuk Arsebiscuits, indeed... Lucasarts can go die. I was mad enough for Full Throttle, but this is the last straw. Adventure games is all they've ever done well... poo on them.

Sad to hear, as i'm a fan of all the old LucasArts and Sierra adventure games. But i'm sure there's a good reason for the cancellation.

I wrote them a letter saying that it was these old games that made LA. Now they are abandoning the fans... hopefully someone will read it and at least write me back but I wont hold my breath.

The fact is that a Star Wars game will sell like hotcakes, while a Sam & Max game will be lucky to not hit the bargain bin in a month.

Someone started a petition... already has over 6000 names!

I've never signed an online petition before... but this was the one to push me over the edge!

Even though online petitions don't mean jack, I was checking out that petition you linked to and it now has over 17,000 signatures, that is not too shabby for the time its been up. Even if only half those people emailed lucasarts, I bet the pr reps are getting bugged by the emails (I've written them about the Monkey Island collector pack once in the past and I've gotten a personal response from them), could be something...maybe :).

Signed....number is approaching the 18,000 mark. :)

Unfortunately, it's a case of opportunity cost. They could make more money from a Star Wars-branded FPS or RTS than an adventure game starring characters few people today (relative to the size of gamers in general) would even recognize.

Still, I signed it and sent them an e-mail.

I completely forgot about Sam and Max Hit the Road until reading this. You guys are taking me in my way back machine here. I think a friend lent me a copy or something when I was younger because I don't have it now. But....now I want it again! Where could I buy this game for the PC? Any suggestions? I checked out Ebay but there was only one copy available. I guess I want what is called the "talkie" version too right? Anyway thanks in advance for your help.

Man, screw lucasarts.. I should pull out my old talkie original of sam and max and make copies for everyone on the board who hasn't played it so they can piss off lucas arts too lol

don't know what system you have but the talkie one on there is for Mac so be careful :)

I saw some more after revising my search and I think at least two of them are for the PC. But it seems like they go for over ten before shipping. Not sure if I want to pay that for some nostalgia but maybe that is the only way? Was hoping you guys had some inside info since you probaly know way more than me about these sort of things. ok, goto best buy b&m and look for the preorder box for Armed and Dangerous.. (mine still has a few) and it's 10 bucks and it comes with a copy of sam and max that is updated to work in windows. It's still 10 bucks but it's a newer version and no shipping. that's the best i can tell you

I'm considering just buying the disc by itself, screw the preorder. :D
