Instead of Xbox 2, I'll probably pick up a PlayStation 3 (I don't own a PlayStation 2, so I could go back and play some of the RPGs that I haven't yet) and whatever console Nintendo puts out.

Like I said, my biggest worry is hardware failure. The NES or SNES didn't have to worry about a DVD drive, a HD or a NIC going bad. If any of these goes, especially the first two, then my investment is practically useless. I'd like to have a backup for my Xbox games without having to buy another Xbox.
If it ever goes to $99, I just might have to...

I think, as someone stated earlier, that backward compatability is initial release. Sure hardly anyone uses old PS1 games now, but how many PS1 games were played on PS2 at launch? This is where it is beneficial, launch time buyers. I will not drop $200-500 on an XBox2 then have to drop another $50-300 on some games to play on the system.
I want internal storage, preferably harddrive or flash storage, I do not want to have to buy a memory card, they are too small and too expensive versus a HD. I also want to be able to back up the harddrive to avoid loosing any data.

So, what's the point? Who would play Halo 1 over Halo 3? Or Project Gotham 1 over 3? Same goes for fighting games, platform games, etc.

Plus, I really don't think games next generation will be much better graphically, definitely not the same jump we had going from the PSX/N64 to this generation. The biggest advances will be things like more HD support (which I can't take advantage of) and just more polygons per models and some better textures, but I don't think I'll see anything that will blow me away give the relatively low importance I put on graphics.
