Which console dropped to $99 quicker: Dreamcast or Gamecube?

I remember when Dreamcast dropped to $99, I felt burned.

Luckily, I sold my Gamecube a while back when I figured that it was going to drop in price again. If I can get the Gamecube for $60, than I will have made a full $100 profit on my sale and still have a Gamecube..

so, the question is...

When will gamecube be $50/$60? Its $99 now, with a $80 sale coming up or something.. Where will it go from here, considering that eventually Xbox/PS2 will go down to $150.. and eventually 100, no?

Gamecube cant compete at the same price, hence its price drop to $100.

So, what price will they drop to when Xbox/PS2 drop?

I don't see it dropping to 50 before sometime around next Christmas. They are selling real good right now. Something that never happened at any price point for Dreamcast. So the comparison to DC in that since does not work. I would say they are pretty happy to ride around 100 until just before the replacement console comes out.

The 80 sale is Black Friday promotion by Wal-Mart it is really of no consequence when talking pricing strategy.

the difference is like speedyray said, people are still buying GC. I really do not forsee it dropping to 50 or 60, until it becomes obsolete.

now you probably get it used for about that price.

but i think the gamecube dropped much faster to 99 than dreamcast... or at least it seemed that way...

Dreamcast 1 Year 5 months to hit 99.95
Launch 9/9/99
Price drop 2/4/01

Gamecube 1 Year 10 months to hit 99.99

Price drop 9/25/03

You also have to consider the Cube had sold better before its price drop than the Dreamcast did in its entire history.

Cube owners are not going to be burned the same way DC owners were. The DC was basically dead after two years and the Cube will be well supported till at least the end of 2005.

I believe when the Dreamcast dropped it was after they stopped making any more new units, no?

Here is a comparison of when each console dropped in price by $100 in North America:

Xbox: (11/01 to 5/02) = 6 months
Dreamcast: (9/99 to 1/01) = 16 months
Gamecube: (11/01 to 9/03) = 22 months

I'm not sure why someone felt the need to repeat Galanthas' info, only to be able to insert the Xbox, in the previous reply... neither you nor anybody else asked about it.

Launch prices:
Gamecube: $199
Dreamcast: $199
Playstation: $299

Not sure when the PS1 finally reached $99, but it shed $100 upon the arrival of its first E3, post-launch, just as Xbox did (since it was brought up).

Well if we want to include other systems.. N64 dropped the quickest of $100... it was supposed to be $300 but they changed the price last second to $200.. it dropped 100 dollars a month before it even came out!

The original price of the N64 was going to be $249.99 not $300. But Nintendo decided to launch the system at $199.99, which is the original price it went on sale in stores.

I would be surprised if they had another price drop before the launch of their next console. You could always buy a used one.
