I'm betting Nintendo will launch their next console at $199 again.

I was just wondering when is the Xbox 2 supposed to come out??? I have heard some say Fall 2005....that seems a little too soon for me. I think there are still good games to be had on the system. When does the PS3 come out??? I have heard Spring 2006....but don't most systems release in the fall?? Thanks for the input.

I would assume Xbox 2 will be unveiled at E3 (May 2005), and will be coming out around November.

The PS3 may also be unveiled at E3 2005, and be playable at E3 2006. Then released around october or november of 2006. It may come out a bit sooner to compete against xbox 2, but I would rather release during the holiday season than worry about xbox 2.

Nintendo's Revolution shouldn't be far behind the PS3. Or maybe a little ahead.

Well that's my guess. It does seem a bit soon for xbox 2 though. Only a year after halo 2, and xbox live is really picking up. But PS3 is coming out in 2006 most likely. It's been 6 years since the PS2 already, and Microsoft wants to get a head start. So it makes sense. The Dreamcast came out a year ahead of the PS2.

yeah...i think the Xbox should not release its successor till Fall 2006. There is still alot of life left in this system. Also if they release a year ahead of the PS3....that will be the end for Xbox because the PS3 will be so much more powerful than the XBOX2. That is one of the main things going for the Xbox right now...it is the most powerful system. Also Halo 3 needs to be a launch title...there is no way Halo 3 is going to be ready by Fall 2005...look how long it took just to get part 2.

The Inquirer is reporting that official, final Xbox 2 development kits are set to ship early next year, upgrading the current PowerMac G5 + Radeon 9800 kits to something using ATI's R500 graphic chipset. That means two things: the Xbox 2 hardware should use R500-class hardware (duh) and the R500 is pretty close to being locked and loaded, meaning we could reasonable expect a new Radeon video card using the chipset around the same time next year.

Couldn't find the thread on it, but somewhere around here the rumors about Halo 2 missing the 3rd act and having something to do with the launch of the next console were posted by someone. Anyway, I got a 'wink' type of confirmation on this rumor actually being true. Won't even hint at my source since his or her job would be on the line, but it looks like they're gonna be updating Halo2 graphics for the next gen system and adding in the real ending of the game and it should end up being a launch title.

There's a big Xbox 2 conference in Redmond in january and from what it sounds like, they pretty much have things mapped out in terms of hardware. I agree that they're moving a little fast on this one, but the way the holiday seasons have been going - people seem to want to buy the newest latest thing and if Xbox 2 launches alone, it'll gain a huge lead over the competition.

With Sony going with non standard hardware again it's unlikely that they will be able to surpass the graphics of the current crop of xbox 2 games at launch time. Of course the same was true for the DC.

I don't think MS has much to lose by going early with the xbox2 and potentially a lot to gain. As long as they get the design right this time (not a brick!) then they'll do alright.

Some of these spec details are too advanced for me. I have a few questions (specifically about the XBOX) about the next gen systems. Maybe there's a site thatll help me or maybe someone here can:

1) Will there be a hard drive
2) Will they do backwards compatibilty.
3) How much improvement will the graphics be. (similar to from PS1 to 2)
4) WHat is this Wilfi thing.
5) How much will the Box cost
6)Ive heard rumors that you will no longer need high speed internet for XBox Live.

1. Yes. There have been rumors that there will be three flavors of the xbox. one without hard drive, one with hard drive, and one with harddrive + media center. Having three flavors is a bad thing, as software developers will develop games for the lowest common denomenator (the no hard drive version)

2. No. There's supposedly a emulation app that may make it possible.
3. I'd guess about double the graphics ability.
4. wifi = Wireless Fidelity = 802.11x means that you wouldn't need any wires to connect you xbox to your wireless router.
5. $300 (guess)
6. I would not believe those rumors.

Some educated guesses:
1. For the purpose of games there won't be a HD. I would assume that the default xbox configuration will include a large amount of flash ram though for saved content, at least 256 meg, but probably more.
2. I hope so but it will need to be done in software.
3. I think Half Life 2 is probably a reasonable benchmark for how first gen games will look on xbox 2 (some better, some worse).
4. skip
5. $300 for the base configuration (surely no more expensive than this)
6. If anything, more complex games will require more bandwidth.

1. As others have said. Probably not for games. I say good as it'll keep games down. The hard drive has yet to be used creatively, and having a lot of flash memory will still be fine for game saves. Load times might be a little worse, but I can live with that as they're fine on the PS2 and GC without harddrives

2. No, which is a bummer. My entertainment systems full, and I'm always behind on games so I'll still be wanting to finish up X-box games probably a year or two into next gen. Backwards compatibilty would be great as I could sell my X-box and catch up on the new one. Hopefully this app thing others have talked about will work well.

3. Probably not drastic, but a good step up. It won't be as noticeable a difference as the PS2, XBOX and GC were to the PSone and N64 though. Just like the move from NES to SNES wasn't the same as move from Atai/Intellivison to NES. There's only so much better 3D graphics can get. (I suppose a lot if you want photo realism, but I prefer more cartoony or original/stylistic graphics).

4. Assume it's just wireless connectivity for online gaming.

5. I'm guessing the non-harddrive version will be $200, the HD version $300 and the media center version $400.

6. No way, from reviews for DOA: Ultimate, there's lag issues on live now. Imagine how bad it would be with non-highspeed users.

So without the harddrive (only flash memory) will we be able to put CDs on the box, Im guessing at least with the Media Center one.

I imagine that will only be on the HD and Media center versions. I doubt they'll put in support for that on the flash only version.

But keep in mind its still not 100% that these 3 versions will come out, but it seems likely from various news tidbits here and there.

[whispers]I hear they plan to release Xenon sometime between late September and late October. I also hear that they have Halo 2 (xbox version) working on the Xenon through software flawlessly and it looks as though many if not most xbox games will play on the system. You'll have to get the Xenon Pro version though (the one with the hard drive) obviously. I also hear that they will have an unprecidented number of launch titles (currently shooting for ~30, but expect no less than 15). I also hear that one of the titles that is based on the unreal 3 engine (which I saw in action at E3) looks spectacular.[/whispers]

Sounds good. I guess that will sell me on the xenon pro version (I probably would have gone for the no HD version otherwise).

Sony, IBM and Toshiba to reveal PS3 powering Cell Chip Today

Today at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference in San Francisco the long awaited Cell Processor will be revealed by Sony, IBM and Toshiba. The Cell processor is supposed to power the new Sony Playstation 3 (PS3).

The three companies are working on the Cell Chip CPU since 2001 (see also our first Cell Chip report). The chip is supposedly featuring four cores and is more powerful than what Intel and AMD currently have in their stable. High definition TVs and the PS3 due 2006 will be using the new Cell chip. We will know more later today when the announcements are made.
More details on the Financial Times, New York Times.

This is from the Times which is a reputable British paper. I'd just like to say, before the flames begin, that the price they mention is projected and is probably the cost of the PS3 as opposed to what they sell it for (which is always for a loss at launch):

How soon will it be before I can buy a product that uses the Cell?

Its first scheduled appearance will be in the Sony PlayStation 3 games console, which should go on sale in early 2006. A prototype is expected to feature at the E3 computer fair in Los Angeles this May.

What difference will it make to the equipment?

The Cell chip is faster than existing microchips because it can work on several tasks at once. Computers with Cell chips can also share processing power so that if one computer is not working at full speed, another connected to it by a network or the internet can make use of its spare computing capacity.

What difference will Cell users notice?

In games consoles, faster microchips will allow game designers to employ higher quality sound and smoother, more realistic graphics. There is already suggestions that greater use of graphics from Hollywood movies may be possible.

In PCs, the main use will be multimedia applications as Cell chips will be better able to process the vast amount of information delivered by ever-faster broadband internet connections.

According to IBM, today's microchips were created with word processors and spreadsheets in mind and therefore struggle to cope with tasks such as downloading music and displaying video. The Cell chip has been designed to address this shortcoming.

And what difference might it make to the price of these goods?

It will make them more expensive, at least in the early stages of production. Financial analysts have suggested that the high cost of the PlayStation 3, which they predict will have to be priced at between $500 and $750 when it is launched in the United States, will deter potential buyers. As always with computers, though, the price is likely to fall quite rapidly with time.

Is it odd that we haven't heard peep from MS regarding XB2? This system is coming out this year right? Geez no pics. I guess they are saving everything for E3.

I'm surprised by it as well. I guess it's because they just released HALO2 and want to make sure that anyone who's thinking about getting an Xbox will (as opposed to waiting until the holidays to get the new one). Otherwise, they would at least be putting out more teasers, even if they weren't giving out specific details.

It's gutsy (being the polite word for it) to wait to show details until E3 considering Sony will be stealing some of the limelight with a product that has an extra year to live up to its promises.
