NES - Golgo 13: The Professional
I played this before I knew anything about the anime, and it blew me away. Okay, the gameplay was very bad, but the subject matter and story was so much more mature than I'd seen up until that point. I still like it.

Genesis - Lemmings
It was a great port and actually worked really well on the Genesis. We had wars into the night with this one in college.

SNES - NCAA Basketball
It was probably the first 3D sports title I ever played, I really enjoyed the gameplay, and I could kill with Oklahoma State.

Saturn - Fighting Vipers
Loved it.

Playstation - Intelligent Qube and Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo
Two of the best puzzle games ever! I still have and frequently play my copy of SPF2T. I can't find a copy of IQ for less than $60.

N64 - ehh, I never really loved anything on that machine, save for the Zelda games, and they're not "sleepers".

Playstation 2 - .hack//... (the series)
*ducks from oncoming attacks* I know a lot of people on this board don't like it, but I do. The gameplay is nothing greater than mediocre, but the story and the tie in with the anime series and the OVA's included with the games are what make this series enjoyable from me.

There are lots more games I love for the PS2, but none that are under-appreciated. Probably because I didn't get a PS2 until I was well into adulthood, and I don't have time to play games on a whim anymore. I only pick up games that I thouroughly researched beforehand so I pretty much know if I'll like them.

Just the rules of this thread for those of you on page two:
  • Each person can only list a total of three underappreciated titles, across all platforms
  • Consoles and PC titles are welcome, but let's stick to the current generation of games (Xbox, GC, PS2, GBA. The Sega Dreamcast is also welcome)
  • Each title selected must be in the format below:

    1. It must have a description of why it was selected ("jrutz picked it because:")
    2. It must say how to find a copy ("Where you can find it," for example: either in B&Ms, online stores, or auctions, depending on its availability - or lack of)

So thanks for your Saturn, SNES, Genesis, Virtual Boy, Intellivision, Pong etc. selections, but let's stick to the current generation of consoles/PCs please.

And again, only three games total please. I have a whole list of games I could mention, but I don't want to list them all and not give anyone else a chance with their selections. So please do the same!

Okay, next!

Jeremy

I read the rules, but I don't wanna play by them... take what you want out of it cuz most of them have already been said, some are for the PC and nobody here listens to me anyway.

PS2
Ico - simply amazing.
Disaster Report - surprisingly good. tons of replay.
Rez - trippy and fun
Frequency/Amplitude - best music game ever
Fatal Frame - good and creepy

PC
Mafia - Game of the year (the year it came out) for me.
Ghost Master - better than sims, it's scaring sims to death
Chaser - Total Recall type FPS - it's long, difficult and really pretty.
Live for Speed - best racing sim in existence.
Savage - it's more addictive than crack.

Xbox
Deathrow - excellent futuristic sports game
Prisoner of War - great stealth game
Steel Battallion - best 200 bux ever spent on one game.

Game: Action HL for the PC
Reason: Ok true it is a mod of PC game (Half-life) but it's such a total mod that it might as well be it's own new game. On my list being action quake was THE big game way back.. When HL came out, many thought it would work even better for Action Quake (well ya get the idea)..

Problem is that CS came out and ate up all the servers that could have been Action servers.... So you never really had the level of server support for the game. Less servers, less gamers, less gamers, even less servers.. sigh.. Action HL was still worked on of course, one can still find it online. (it's a free mod) It's pretty polished now worth a look if you have a group who plays.

At a LAN or whatever it's a blast to play. Just too bad that IMO it got lost in the shuffle or more covered by the shadow of counter strike.
==========
Game: Shogo
Reason: 3d shooter for the PC.. Has a giant robot theme, where you went back and forth from human to mech etc.. Some levels you were all over the city, others were inside buildings.. Even mutiplayer had a range.

Never really took off that big due to poor network code and next to no real server suport. It had a damage mode where bullet holes were seen on the walls all the time etc, so mutiplayer was great with crome hits all over the place. Heck you even had a doll that did nothing but make other cry..heh

To be honest the game did suffer a bit from getting pushed out the door a bit quick.. The last few levels of the single player game seemed a bit rushed.. Still.. If one is a FPS fan it's worth checking out..

Might be able to find it at the discount bin... or for like $5 ish on ebay

I can only think of one for now...

PS2

Maximo - Many people seem to slam this game for being too hard, but it really is a great game if you have the fortitude to keep trying and finish at 100%. Besides, there's nothing wrong with a game that's actually hard and will take several tries to get right.

Great game, can't wait for the sequel. Jan/Feb is to far away.
The only thing I disliked about it actually had nothing to do with the gameplay. It is a blue bottom disc so it makes my PS2 sound like it's a high speed drill heh. Annoys the hell out of me. I've tried to avoid blue bottom discs but I couldn't pass up maximo.

Controlling Giagantic Robot's (like the ShoGun Robots that we played with as kids) with your character's radio controlled controller that happens to look like a psx controller. Control scheme was neat with each analog stick controlling each arm. Playing it was like being in a godzilla movie. And the localzing development team made it campy like the monster movies.

Can be found for $20.00 at Gamestops actually costs more used at some places.
-AzelEdge-

I agree.

RAD is great and I wondered how I missed it when it came out.

I played this game once a few months back and I loved it. but I'm having trouble finding it locally. I'lll get it though...

heh, I'm surprised to see people asking about this game now. Until awhile ago I was the only one on this forum who had played this game. I posted my impressions in this thread (don't be confused by the zombie talk, just scroll down).
http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=312402

The game got pretty bad review scores overall. Gameplay is just walking or running around, nothing too complicated. Bad voice acting. Not too hard to finish either and is pretty short. There's different endings depending on who you team up with. A neat game overall if you can find it for $9.99, don't pay any more.

Maximo kicks ass. If I had a PS2 this is one game I would pick up in a heartbeat.

Funny how this is another mech game on my list of buried treasures but it is completely different than VO.... Simulation of something that doesn't exist, at its best!

Really wish I hadn't been so short on cash when it came out. I'd pick it up in a second if I had a chance now. Amazon has the sequel listed for a 3/5/04 release. Has anyone heard if they'll be releasing any copies of the sequel combined with the controller for folks who missed out the first time? Seems like a good idea to me, and then they could also re-release the original one without the controller included.

either way, my choice for buried treasure is:

Xbox: Sega Soccer Slam
I had heard great stuff about this from Penny Arcade for the GC version, but I was pretty much unaware of the xbox version for a long time. Finally picked it up around last Dec. Tons of fun. Great style, action, etc. I just wish I had someone to play with. Everyone says stuff like this is so much better in multiplayer, but I never have anyone to play against.

Blast Corps - kick ass tearing down buildings and demolishing, still nothing like it to this day.
Goemon's Great Adventure- Great co-op game with nice music and a strange story.

PS2
Gitaroo-Man- fun music game with good music.
Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille Zur Macht- Interesting game, very deep philosophical story.
Suikoden III - The trinity system worked so well with this game, provided an interesting story.
Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil - if you havne't played this you are missing out on an awesome platformer.

Gamecube
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem - Quite possibly the best game ever created, the Lovecraft inspired story and multiple characters you play were awesome.
Skies of Arcadia Legends - fun rpg with some of the better characters, much improved in the load time department and speedness of battles.
Bomberman Generations - its old school bomberman like you know it.

I have read (rumors) that Capcom will be releasing a redesigned (smaller) mech joystick for the sequel (sold separately also for those who already invested in the first game).

It is a really great game, you feel like you are in the middle of a war. There is really nothing like it out there.

ps2-Ratchet and Clank. Thanks to some suggestions on this site I picked up this title. It's the best platformer I've played in years, in fact I think it's the best since some of Rare's N64 titles.

That's not what I heard. At e3, we were told that they would release the sequel with and without the controller... the controller would be the same, but it would have an extra plug for the headset since it's gonna be a Live title. I don't know why it's takin so long to come out either.

So if they're going to release the sequel with the joystick -- will they plan on rereleasing the original by itself? That would be cool.

gc - small library so far, with well known titles on hand.

xbox - don't have it yet, but will be picking one up soon and will be getting kung fu choas.

dreamcast - test drive lemans, sense of speed and in car view are the best.

psx - rally cross was ripped for bad control but i found it to be a great game with good control if you feather the throttle.

ps2 - victorious boxers, the best boxing game out there with good control (once you customize to your liking)and good presentation of the sport.

Not enough people have played the Dance Dance Revolution series as notorious as it is. It is so fun and ever changing and never gets old.

Xenosaga is the one of the most enjoyable RPG's ever, as far as gameplay goes. And the story is second to none. However, it got overlooked because it lacked 'gameplsay"

Arc The Lad: Twilight of Spirits is a throwback to old 16 bit RPG's, but with top quality graphics and excellent strategy gameplay. I have no idea why people overlooked this in favor of Disagea [or however you spell it] Arc brought back memories of Shining Force and Fire Emblem

Lastly though, everything on Sega Genesis and Saturn was overlooked in favor of Super Nintendo and Playstation, so many beautiful games on those systems, a shame people were too obsessed with Mario and Cloud.
