You know, if you try and buy all these components separately, it does cost a couple hundred more (even more if you go with Sony brand). While I may not be digging into my pockets for this, I can see how many people will.

"It will also sell a 250-gigabyte version for 99,800 yen."

That's $900 people. Who is going to buy this crap. I wonder how they are going to price the PS3, because they said that it will have some of these fixtures.

I think it might take awhile, but if it's priced around $700, I think it will sell pretty well. Regular schmoes (not us) will love the idea of having an all in one box, that can also play 1000's of video games.

Sony PS2 - $180
Sony DVDR - $600
TiVo 80Gb - $350

Total - $1130

So you get twice as much hard drive for hundreds less. I don't see where people come off saying this is overpriced. Somone in the market for two of the three features would get a nice deal.

I don't think it's necessarily overpriced for what you get. It's just a little over priced for Joe Six Pack.

Home theater enthusiasts will pass on it because they already have the stuff in superior standalone components, and most roll their eyes at bundled "home theater in a box" type components to begin with.

So that leaves Joe Six Pack that doesn't know that stand alone stuff is better, or simply cares more about getting a deal than having top of the line quality. But IMO, this price tag will be a little high for him.

I just want to go on record as saying I will be SHOCKED if this thing isnt' a total failure. Seems like (as someone said earlier) a complete waste of R&D that could have been spent more wisely someplace else. Seems like Sony is getting desperate to recapture it's glory days. If anything, I think they should have waited to release this as a high-end PS3 or something.

Is there a memory card slot, or is the HD used for game memory?

Not to mention the money you could be spending on separate quality cables for each device and possibly a video switcher (although your receiver or TV may be able to handle that).

It looks like this thing doesn't have component video outputs.

Jw2299, those black slots on the right could be the memory card slots, although they look to be where the controllers plug into.

The controllers plug into the back and it uses Memory Sticks instead of memory cards. I think that is the direction Sony wants to go with their gaming machines as the PSP will also support Memory Sticks.

To All: This is a Sony project and is made by Sony. The PS/PS2/PS3/PSP are products of SCE. Totally separate from each other. The money spent on the PSX would never go towards any product made by SCE.

Just a note to those who think it will fail:

http://www.audiorevolution.com/news/....pioneer.shtml

Pioneer already has a version out on the market which retails for hundreds more and provides less storage (and obviously, no gaming capability). This is just a genre that Sony is entering, no more, no less.

There was a blurb about it in EGM either this month or last month. Nothing not known in this thread, mentioned the price would be around $1000.

If this was in the 500 range I would seriously think about it. I have been putting off on buying a DVD Recorder, my PS2 is slowly dying, and I don't have a tivo unfortunately. I would be all over this if it was priced lower (even though I know this is already a good deal as far as buying everything seperately).

I really like the look of this, but I do not like the fact that the controllers plug into the back, that shortens your available distance by like 7 or 8 inches atleast.

I am definitely going to keep my eyes open for a good deal on this once it hits the US.

Here's a little something I created in Excel to keep track of what the PSX will offer.

The Japanese version to be released in December is priced around $720 (DESR-5000 ). So I'm hoping that when it comes out in the US, our version will be priced the same or less. The only thing I really don't like is the USB 1.1. Why the hell wouldn't they do USB 2.0?

Chris

It says that it is progressive scan, but the outputs does not list any type of component video. Also the picture posted earlier of the rear panal confirms that there are no y pb pr connections, and I don't see a PS2 AV connection. How is that going to work?

This might be a stupid question, but it says playback can be from a Memory Stick or CD-R. Do they mean that for video or just for Music/MP3? If video, do you think it would be possible that it can play divx files or any other video format (mpeg, quicktime, etc)? If it could play divx I would be all over this, just another plus to add to the increasing stack of abilities. Any ideas?

It sure seems like a very limited market to me. Most of the things it has, has a competitor that has something better (most likely). It will probably end up cheaper to by a PS2, Tivo, dvd recorder seperately and have better individual components.

On the other hand, if they could come out with somehting like this at the same time as when they release the PS3, it would be worth looking at.

Yep.

I've said it before, all in one machines are just for those that don't know any better.

You can always build a better system for the same or less, by buying superior stand alone components.
