I pick my games carefully
Ok if you're cheating through an RPG, there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with you, and the same can be said about a strat game as well, but for heavens sake Mario World!?! I just finished that game last night and it only took me 3 days, no cheats all memory. Id say your picking your games poorly.

zero nothing more wrong with me than if I go through threads belittling other people because G-d forbid they do something I don't and I don't agree with.

I got all exits, all coins, and maxed out the score to where it won't move anymore (and all exits and coins includes Special World and Star World).

For RPGs I get all items and do all quests and sidequests.

DLogic I guess you're kind of lucky you replied to my posts first, because if you had picked the wrong person you would have gotten a very nasty reply. I suggest you think about what you post before posting. That's great advice for all new posters here.
On bulletin boards what you write and the tone of your replies matter. I realize you registered on February 2002 but you don't have many posts here, which is the same as being new. Lurking and posting are two very different things.

Back on topic, I just watched the new video.

Where's that guy who thinks HL2 will be just an "average" FPS?

You're probably right... to be honest with you, Wolfenstien 3D was probably my favorite FPS. And since then there has probably been one evolutionary step since then (Doom) that had caught my eye... As for Heretic, Quake, Halo, it's all the same to me.
And before anybody decides to flame, yes I did play Halo, and finished it. Graphically good but, honestly, nothing special. I might give HL2 a try but I'll probably lose interest like I did with Counterstrike.

Yeah, boo if you want... I just ask the question. why go thru the hassle of buying a game only to blow thru it as quick as possible? It's really senseless. I worked two jobs for the longest time, even one at a local Gamestop for nearly a year. And just about everyone who plopped their hard earned cash probably came back and bought a strategy guide. This is what I call legal cheating. Just buying a game and GameSharking/Action Replaying it to all hell is just plain boring after a while. Hell I didn't have to cheat to realize there's nothing more to State Of Emergency then picking on a character and repeating the same attack for 10-15 min. just plain boring. I'd like to know at least one game you played and didn't cheat thru. And tetris can't be one of them.

Well I'll reply even though with your "blow thru" games comments it's apparent you don't read my posts. It's boring to who? I have fun with my games. And if you call 100+ hours blowing through a game, I'd shudder to think what you call plodding through it.

And I beat The Casino Kid for the NES without cheats.

I'm gonna follow Jack's advice and wait to the last minute to upgrade. But I need EVERYTHING! Total system overhall for me except for the hd, cd, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

New stuff I need:
Case - I have a server case right now, too heavy and bulky for Lan parties
Mobo
Proc - Probably P4 (3ghz) that supports 800 mhz FSB
Vid - I think the 9600 Pro looks like the sweet spot for me, I won't spend more than 200.
Mem - Dual channel DDR, either 512 or 1gig depending on how rich I'm feeling.
New fans and round ide cables

I'm hoping to get done for less than 500, but I don't think thats possible. It'll probably be more like 750. I can't wait!

everyone shut the hell up about cheating - this thread is about overhauling a PC to play Half Life 2 and Doom 3 - it's not about how you think FPS games are suckekekeke or how you cheat at every game or how yout think cheaters are dum dums... Take it outside. If you don't like FPS games - go to another thread. Get off deb's back for using cheats - it's her business.

Anyway - once again back on topic - I have been thinking about it and I think I'm gonna wait until next generation video cards to pick one up. The 9800 will only have decent framerates - I'd like something better. I'll play through HL2 more than once and if I gotta play it with dx8 visuals instead of dx9 the first time, then so be it. :/

So I'll miss the pretty stuff, but will it be playable (the one thing I hate is freezing) and smooth with an nVidia MX400?

Considering that the MX400 only gets about 26fps on Aquanox at 800x600, I don't think you'll be able to get any workable framerates out of that card with HL2.

Yeah for less than the cost of the game you could upgrade your card to something better.

Exactly what I was thinking, although I'll probably upgrade my MB, CPU and RAM. I'm hoping my GF4Ti4200 can muster through the game until the next-gen video cards hit.

I think that's where alot of people are... CPU around 2ghz and a GF4 ti4200 or ti4400. I have a 4400 and I hope it can trudge through the game. I was able to play the Doom 3 alpha, so maybe...

I'm hoping my $100 Radeon 8500LE will give me a "good" experience with HL2 and I think it will. I'll probably wait for the game to be released to see how it actually performs before I make a final decision.

the ulltimate answer in the SP/LAN play with steam..

http://www.halflife2.net/forums/show...288#post143288

Q: I'm not sure if it will ever cease or not. The constant nagging question that people are asking - Will Steam be required to have an internet connection active when starting up a singleplayer game or a LAN game?

Gabe: No, it won't.

There will be a brief transition (like two weeks) when it is necessary, but
then it will go away. It's a temporary issue.

Welcome to the Rock!

ATI's Radeon 9800XT, Half Life bundle to be launched in Alcatraz On the 30th September

ATI'S long awaited card that is expected to take the performance lead in the increasingly bitter graphics battle, is to be launched in Alcatraz, the former prison just a wave away from freedom-loving city San Francisco.

The cards are close to being finalised, with ATI boffins hoping the clock speeds will be a little less than 415MHz for the core, and 730MHz for the memory.

We're not certain that these are the final numbers, but you probably already know that the 30th is also the day when Valve will introduce its highly anticipated Half Life 2 with its now famous benchmarks.

As we said previously, all Radeon 9800XT cards will be shipped with this card and this is likely to cost ATI some serious money -- some are suggesting as much as $8 million, although we still wait to get solid proof about the Nvidia-ATI auction.

The card will cost $399 and will be in the shops two to three weeks after the Alcatraz announcement in serious quantities.

The European launch party will take place in Munich - not so exotic as Alcatraz -- but the place where ATI has its nice offices and as far as we know there will be no Paris and London based parallel events.

As we've said elsewhere, the interesting thing here is whether there was or was not an auction to bundle Half Life 2 with ATI or Nvidia.
Looks like the Sept 30th launch/finish date is getting more solid.

Nooooooo! It's too soon for me to upgrade my PC. I was hoping for the November release date so I could save up and get a new MB, CPU and RAM. Now I'm probably going to have to turn everything off to run it on my PIII800/GF4Ti4200 if it'll run at all.

I've already got a RAdeon 9700 non pro at Pro speeds, but my cpu and ram is a little lacking. Hopefully i'll be ok I probably won't upgrade just for Half Life 2, but by the time Doom 3 rolls around i probably will.

I just read on Firingsquad that HL2 eats CPU and RAM for breakfast. They recommend at least a 3GHz CPU and at least 1GB RAM. It's true they aren't testing the final release, but things aren't looking good for me on waiting to upgrade. I want to wait until the last possible moment to upgrade, but we'll see. It looks like I'm going to need a new CPU, MB, RAM and video card. That's almost $1000 there (at least for something that will run HL2 decently).

wow.. 1gb of ram. ouch.

I need to upgrade my CPU soon, hopefully it will run on my amd 1.7, I have enough ram to handle it. now just a video card. I'm hoping to not have to get a new processor just yet. scale down the graphics, lower resolution.. and I'll play it over again later on.

There's always the XBOX versions, you know

I was a BIG proponent of PC vs XBOX, but ...

$450 video card
$300 512 more megs of ram to get to 1gig
------------------------------------------------------
$750 (and I already have 512MB and a P4 3GHZ)

plus the cost of the games
vs
$100 for both XBOX games.
I'll take the lesser graphics

I'll have to settle for

as opposed to
and
