Aliens V Predator: Extinction
Yet another game Giantrobo likes that many here no doubt HATE
In this game you can control Aliens, Predators, or Marines and you use strategy and/or brute force to complete missions. You don't do the actual fighting but your group fights for you. I don't know why but it seems fun. At least to me it does. I've heard it's had decent reviews.
Has anyone tried it?
What did you think?
Any tips?

Trying it now, once you get into it it's really a lot easier to control than it sounds while you're running through the tutorials. I've only played the marines so far though...
Loving it so far
Except for the usual problem in group control games when characters sometimes wander off on their own because they think they know a better way to get to the location you clicked on
It's usually the medic or the sniper or something like that too that goes off and gets itself killed
The only tips so far:
- During the initial stages of the level instead of buying extra characters I usually buy a couple of upgrades w/ the initial money and then characters w/ the money from the first source (it seems you always start by one). At min the comtech and the infantry upgrades first, the next one to buy (although maybe not right away) is the one for the medic.
- Once you get a full complement of characters I've found atleast 3 medics and 3 comtechs seems to work best (esp the medics and always make sure you heal your medics first after a battle). After that a good mix of the other fighters.
One question, does everyone move their platoon around as a mass group or do you actually try the "groupings" option to divide the characters into "squads"? So far it seems like it's more trouble than it worth (although it may solve the wandering off problem) so I haven't really bothered w/ it yet...
Another question... does anyone know if this is slated to come out on the PC? Although the controls aren't too bad it would obviously be easier to do so on the PC, not to mention the possibility then for expansion packs/levels

1. I've found the groupings cool but I've ony tried using them once with Aliens. But I can see where it would be cool to use. BTW, if you didn't know, you probably do, you can unhitch the Queen from her egg sack if she's being attacked or if you want to move her....I just learned that.....DUH!
2. I often use the right stick to place waypoints on the map instead of using the camera view. I HATE not being able to see more of the areas unitl a character reaches the area.
3. Using Alien runners to infect Marines is fun fun fun....
Upgrade them so that they infect the marines and they'll violently vomit black stuff
. I assume you can do the same to Preds but I've yet to try it on them.
one thing I'm not crazy about is the sound in this game. I don't like buying xbox games without Dolby Digital and this one even seems low to my ears. otherwise it's fun game

Yep I did have to turn up the sound a bit from it's usual level. I don't have the system hooked into anything but the TV so the DD doesn't really affect me right now, I can see where is would be a nice bonus though
Like I said I haven't played anything but the marines yet but I'll keep the tips in mind when I get to the aliens.
BTW speaking of the marines, anyone else having problems w/ #6 (the AA guns)? It seems anytime I destroy one of the guns I'm swarmed w/ Preds and they just overrun me. That's a full complement of 25 including an exosuit, a couple of Sadars, and about 1/2 dozen smart gunners. I've tried setting up a "base" (w/ a comtech and some protection) around one of the drop zones and then sending everyone else out on a suicide run to take out the gun. They are able to do it, the Preds swarm and kill them off, then they hunt down the "base" and finish them off too
TIA

Just a quick update/some more observations...
I was able to finish #6 finally, although it may not have been the best solution because by the time I was done I was triple the "recommened" time
Anyway here's what I did
Some more observations (speaking mainly from the marines since that's all I've played so far):
- The overall story line could use some work, both in script and in presentation. There was no wrap up to the story once the 7th mission was complete
- The exosuits work great against aliens and so-so against preds, opposite for the snipers (so it seemed).
- When fighting preds make sure you have something around that can see the Stalker. It seemed to me the synthetics could, and maybe the snipers (maybe it's mentioned in the book, as it was a rental I don't have a copy of it).
- Maybe a little more difficult to do w/ a console (or maybe they just didn't bother) but a randomly generated map/level generator would have been a nice touch.
- Make sure you REALLY want the sentry gun before you order it. They take up two personnel slots, are hard to move around and they are hard to get rid of unless you purposfully set them up somewhere to be destroyed (and that doesn't always work).
Overall though I think it's a pretty enjoyable game and I highly recommend it for anyone who likes the genre (either the movies or the style of game).
