I am playing half-life for the first time

Yes, believe it or not, I just purchased the platinum pack of this game so I can finally get myself used to the whole mouse/keyboard combo. I think I'm getting pretty used to it, but I'm only playing on medium difficulty, and not against anyone else yet. So far I have been frustrated on one thing. I don't know if it's my computer, but I get a lot of glitches when elevators come into play. A lot of times as soon as that "loading" screen pops up my character will get stuck to the floor. Can't move, can't jump, have to reload. I have been able to overcome this by jumping like a madman when I encounter these troublesome elevators, but I was wondering if there was a fix for this. I was trying to use the half-life updator that came with the cd, but it keeps saying invalid internet config, or something to that effect.

This has led to a problem though because one time I left an explosive pack on an elevator and sent it upward so I could detonate it at the top, but it keeps falling through the floor. I tried throwing it at the top, and then just taking the elevator back down, but I again got stuck to the floor.

I have a pretty new computer, maybe I just need to update the drivers? Anyone want to recommend a program that will automatically update my sound and video drivers?

Just bought the platinum as well. Pretty good, but I really haven't had the time to commit yet.

Spainlinx0, what version are you running?

I believe the latest version is 1.1.0. if your not running the latest version, go out and download the updates. Depending on the version you are running, you may be able to get just the lateset update. However, if you are more than a version behind, it may just be easier to get the full update, which will bring you up to the current version, regardless of what your running now. I, too, had problems with the Sierra Update program and just d/l the patch from Gamespy. It's somewhere near 80megs, but goes pretty quick.

Here is a note. if you have any of the software. either CS or HL.. without the other, you can download them free from Valve using their STEAM download. so if you bought CS stand alone, you can get HL for free by downloading it from them.

Upgraded to the latest version, but still seem to be having that elevator glitch. Now the updater works, but strangely. It says that my version is out of date, but that there are no updates after the one I have.

Yeah I always had problems with elevator glitches like that, on a few different systems, so it is the game. Oh well.

I've gotten stuck in that elevator too. I think it's just a glitch in the game. I had the latest update last time I played and got stuck there once, but I just reloaded my save and it didn't hapen again.

Well sometimes it happens, and sometimes it doesn't. I just save constantly and it seems to work alright.

I had this happen only a few times while playing through the first couple of times on an older computer. Then I just replayed Half-Life not too long ago on a somewhat newer computer and for some reason I seemed to get stuck on almost half the elevators/platforms in the game. I resorted to quicksaving everytime I was about to step on one, then jumping when it's about to stop- if you're in mid-air when it stops you wont get stuck. It was slightly annoying, but it got me through the game.

This is pretty much exactly what I do, unfortunately it can get pretty annoying when you mistime your jump, and those elevator trips feel like they take longer each time you have to use one.

HL is ok, but the real benefit of buying the game is that u can play TFC/DoD online now... get em... they are the best thing ever to happen to team-based online fps...

Well the package I bought came with Opposing Force, Team Fortress Classic, Counter-Strike, and Blue Shift. I am just playing through the game to get used to the controls, since I am primarly a console gamer, and then I will attempt to not get my ass completely kicked when I go on for Counter-Strike.

DoD isn't part of the package, but it's a free download.

it's Day of Defeat. a WWII based game and one of the best I have played.

free download... guess i shoulda specified. At any rate, DoD rocks... definitely worth getting. There are other HL mods out there as well.. but since TFC/DOD have occupied the last 3 years of my life I havent had time to get to the others. IMO half life is the best value in the history of gaming. so much game play with all the mods etc and u just have to buy the one game to get em all.

Another vote for Day of Defeat. CS is a joke compared to it.

What server to you guys play on? I play on Heart of Dixie usually.

Damn, I never knew that. I guess I had always heard that counter-strike was the best mod available for multiplayer gaming. After I (hopefully) beat the game, what mod do you guys suggest I try first? I like capture the flag games or at least team games more than every man for himself type games, but I'm open to suggestions.

Are you running the game with DirectX or OpenGL in your video options? Half-Life's DirectX support sucks. I had that same problem and I think it went away as soon as I switched to OpenGL. I also bought the Platinum pack since I lost my original copy of Half-Life a long time ago.

You would like Day of Defeat very much then. CS is very much every man for himself with no flags.

Day of Defeat requires much more teamwork. The objective is to capture and hold flags. Capture all flags on the map and you win.

Be warned that it takes a little while to get used to. Strategy plays a big role. You can't just go running around shooting everything that moves or someone will pick you off every time since the bolt action rifles kill in one shot. Use cover and move in groups.

I recommend playing on Heart of Dixie. It is a friendly fire server. There is an admin playing 90% of the time and they don't take ANY crap from people killing their own team on purpose, etc.

Two other mods I've heard are good are "The Specialists" - a matirx like FPS with bullet time moves like Max Payne and "Natural Selection" - a aliens vs. marines type FPS. I haven't played either though.

I am using Direct3D under the options. I'm assuming that's my DirectX option. It says that OpenGL isn't supported under my card whenever I try to use it. Should it be? I have a GeForce4 Ti 4800. I have DirectX 9.0b installed.

I would think your card would work with OpenGL. I have a GForce 4 as well and it works on mine. What OS are you running? I'm using XP Pro.

XP home edition. Maybe it's my LCD? I think it flashes an out of sync error real quick.
