do the character challenges. You play match play agianst the mario characters. when you beat one, you unlock the "star" version of that character. to use the star version of the character press the "R" button and the distance the star character can hit is longer than the regular character.

Not sure why you are directing the comment to me, I know more about golf than most people. That's why this game looks fun and maybe a bargain bin pickup, but if the physics are screwed I'll stay away. Personally I can't wait for Links on Xbox, it'll be the best console golf game out there.

So far I haven't run into any of these wind anomalies described by deftones.

It's all been fairly accurate... perhaps even less obtrusive than the winds in Links for the PC.

Ahh, sorry, I mis-read and thought you had it already....

I don't see any of the physics issues either, everything looks ok to me. Pick it up as a rental first...Idoubt you'll see this hit bargain bin status anytime soon. Most Nintendo first-party games seem to stay full price for quite a while.

I beat Peach tourny pretty easily by a few shots, havent tried bowser tourny yet. I just finished the ring challenge to unlock
Spoiler:
shadow mario
and then kicked Bowsers ass 5 up in my last character challenge (that was my first try on bowser after D.K. took me 4 tries I think) only done the front 9 of birdie challenge cause the front 9 was tough, actually more nerve racking than tough cause I beat it in an hour or so, need to try back 9 and all 18 tomorrow or this weekend and then try bowser tourny

Is there a way to keep the ball low by hitting knock down shots, having the ball in the back of your stance, stuff like that (other than hitting a softer iron a few clubs below)?

You can't adjust the ball in your stance (can you do that in any golf game?). You can keep the ball low by raising the point of impact though. By changing the point of impact you can also hit fades, draws and high shots. Different characters have different shot flight paths too. Some hit it high/low, some hit big fades/draws, etc.

Yeah you can do it Links Golf.

Not sure I understand "the point of impact". What exactly in the swing does this refer to?

Refer to page 17 in the manual. I think there may be a tutorial on it with Toad in the game also.

Don't have a manual. From the sounds of it, are they talking about a golf adjust their swing path to go steeper or shallower in an effort to adjust your ball flight?

You can hold the stick during your swing to change where you make contact with the ball. If you hold down you'll hit under the ball and hit a shot with more loft and less roll. Left or right will get you a fade or draw. Hold up and you'll top the ball (hit it thin). The ball travels low and gets more roll. At the end of the swing you can affect the roll even more by using a combo of A and B for different degrees of backspin or topspin.

SpaceBoy, are you switching characters? I wondered the same thing as I progressed and started using other characters. I would have to double check though.

BTW, No prob beating the first 3 courses on first try. 4th, I beat on the first try but just by a stroke. But, I can't even make it through Peach invitational yet. I got through 5 or 6 holes before I quit from frustration. Had a +5 on one hole!

Nevermind I'm a dumb@ss.. I must have turned it off or something so it didn't save properly. You can come back and your progress is saved anytime.

So I gotta start over from scratch with a different char? I can't see where I can play that hole with a different char, cause he hasn't beaten the courses prior to the bowser one

I beg to differ. Just did it with Star Yoshi about an hour ago. I used a 3 wood (I think, whatever club he pulls out by default) in Manual Swing for the first shot. Don't use extra power on the first swing, use the full swing in Manual mode with the 3W and pull down on the control stick to get extra loft before hitting A for the final part of the manual swing. If you do it correctly you'll clear the bowser status and land on the small fairway near the statue. Second swing was a 7 Iron or something like that, you'll need to use the Power swing this time, 2nd swing should get you to the fairway under the ring. Then you can swing to get down to the green, watch the wind on the 3rd swing it's heavily against where you are shooting. It's an easy 2 swings from there (chip + putt or 2 putt depending on where you ended up).

The first hit is the only real tough one, not only do you have to make that fairway but you'll need to be in the right part of it to make it to the fairway under the ring.

I'm sure Star Mario is much easier, but it is possible with Star Yoshi.

well I did reach the little fairway under the rings once or twice with Yoshii but was back to far from rings to get through them (because you just barely have the power to get up there with Yoshii and have to land the first shot in the right spot it can't be in the rough)

Space boy - you can just use star Mario or any other character to do any ring challenge and still unlock the special character (because I used Yoshii for everything except the last one you're having trouble with)

[Mario voice]Ha! Haha! Whahoooooooo! Yah![/Mario voice]

I just beat Birdie Challenge on practiaclly my first try. 45 minutes ago I had never played Birdie Challenge, now I've beaten it.

I've had this game since launch but I've been afraid to try Birdie Challenge because of all the stories I've heard about how frustrating it is. Thank God I beat it though. Becuase I got as far as I did so quickly I would have been crushed to come up short.

So anyways, is anyone still playing this great game? I beat Ring Shots this morning and that was a lot of fun too.

Are you sure you completed birdie challenge? You know you have to beat the back nine and all 18 together after that as well.
