Can anyone remember this game? By no means am I talking about Herzog Zwei, one of the finest realtime startegy games of all time! Michael Jackson's Moonwalker was sweet! |
Oh yeah, while we're on the FF topic, i'm actually looking forward to playing FF X-2. The triumphant return of the Job system!

Originally posted by pixyboi Ah but you missed the point by miles. All you seem to mention is the graphics and the cutscenes, which makes perfect sense why you would enjoy the newer games. Would I be content with no nonesne, medicore graphics? ***** yeah I would if there was a solid game under it. Therein lies the problem, the newer games lack the substance the older games had. There's no longer a sense of going on an adventure rather than just watching a [lame] story come together. The new games are so linear and lacking of any real thought behind the adventure. The "gameplay" is only there to serve as in-between the cutscenes fodder. You no longer go exploring, looking for treasure, and battle monster. You simply move from point A to point B (in a straigh line) and if you come across monsters you simply tap the A button a few times to dispatch them to move along to the next cutscene. But let's not forget the oodles of mini-games! Yes, instead of adding substance to the actual adventure they force you to play very non-RPG like mini-games to give you the sense thay you're actually "doing" something rather than just sitting there watching the game unfold. And that's the bottom line and the big difference between the old and new Final Fantasy: In the old games you played a story, in the new games you watch a story. If you prefer the new, that's cool.. I'm only explaining why some people may not like the series. Take Xenosaga for example. Super long ass cutscenes. But a great story, at least IMO. Plus, you could skip them or pause them, which I thought was great. I never skipped any, unless I died and had to retry a battle. I think all games with cutscenes should allow you to skip them. Don't get me wrong, the early FF games had some awesome story lines, and great midi music....but I'll take the new ones anyday. To each his own, eh brother? :D |
Originally posted by nickdawgy Again, I disagree..... The newer games have plenty of story to go around. Originally posted by Superboy You're misunderestimating what pixyboi is saying...he's not trashing the story of the new FF games, but the gameplay. That's the same reason i hate them too...although FF8 stood a chance of coming pretty close to almost being somewhat half-decent in the gameplay department. |
For games that I finished it would be Daikatana. Wow. There was so much good crushed by really bad ideas. The 2 partners I got died so often I wished for a "Don't Revive" button. Half the fun got to be shootin' 'em.

Timesplitters 2 - complete crap. I can't even understand why so many people liked it... it might have been mediocre had the controls not been so completely crappy.
I don't understand why someone would hate every Final Fantasy game ever made - why even play more than one or two of them if you don't like em? "Oh man, that sucked... can't wait for the next one." The games always looked stupid to me - cool looking CG cutscenes and complete garbage gameplay... I'd rather roll 20 sided dice while some nerd wearing a cape tells me I slayed a dragon. I played FF10 and thought it was okay. Nothing to go crazy over, but at least the characters didn't look like duplo people. |
Ah, Final Zone.
It's tough to put that in my list of "worst games you have ever played" {Didn't anybody here play just about anything in the Atari 2600 or Odyssey2 library?}, but that was a true stinker. That has to be one of the biggest letdowns in my years of gaming. Screenshots and previews indicated it had plenty of potential, but, oh my goodness, that impression couldn't have been more wrong. By the way, it's a much better pick for this thread than Quantum Redshift... if QR's one of the worst games somebody has played, he's truly extraordinary in picking out games to play. |

I own it for the GC...maybe the system you tried it on was worse? The game just has so much to unlock and is fun and fast. I guess no game is 100% loved...I hate Halo :) |
TS2's multiplayer is damn good for a console game, especially since you can pick it up for $10...
|
I played a lot of 2600 stuff, but I was a young kid then, so I was enamoured with just playing the video game system. I even liked the traditional crappy games like ET and Pac Man, and the games that were fantastically difficult (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), and the impossibly obtuse like Swordquest. I even liked this crazy space game that came with a different gamepad with overlays and was in the bargin bin because it didn't sell.
Looking back, I realize they were crap, but as a 10 year old kid, I just enjoyed pushing ET around on a screen. It didn't matter to me that the gameplay was impossible. Honestly. |
Heh, yeah einTier, that's exactly how it was for me. Those games mesmorized me, crappiness and all. Didn't matter what someone put in, I'd play it. Only when the original Nintendo came around did I get a little pickier and found a few games on there to be bad (rented those like crazy).

Section Z for NES, that game blew.
|
I liked Section Z, it was just hard as hell if I remember correctly.

Pokemon Snap - Short and Crap..
|
how about anything Pokemon related, lol :D

I'm surprised in all of the Final Fantasy bashing no one has mentioned FF: Mystic Quest on the SNES. It was a dumbed down version of Final Fantasy released in the states to attract non-RPG players. One of the worst games ever.
WWE Crush Hour is horrible too. |
Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly.
|
Suprised this one has not been mentioned yet: State of Emergency.
|
yeah, I bought state of emergency after GTA3 came out, thought "rockstar", the game has got to kick ass. Popped it in, was impressed at how many people on screen, then realized graphics were really low rez sorta, and that sinking feeling comes over you that is all there is, nothing else. just running around in a crowd, die, rinse, repeat. Sheesh

Originally posted by illennium Vandal Hearts II is the worst game I've ever finished. That was a fun, but slightly too easy, follow-up to the great SRPG Vandal Hearts. Reviews slammed the sequel so much for the simultaneous movements, consistently leaving the mistaken impression that your chosen guy would walk over and swing futilely at the space an enemy guy just left (and vice versa), that I only picked it up when it was $8 at Meijer one day. That'll probably stand up as my best $8 videogame-related purchase for at least a few more years. Edit: Don't know why I didn't defend this months ago when I stood up for Quantum Redshift's reputation. -smile- |
