Top 3 PC Games of all time
Forgive me if this thread has been done before. I tried searching for it (you can imagine how interesting that was given that neither "top" nor "pc" are 4 letter words but I digress) and couldn't find anything.
Anyway, Giantrobo's "Something..." thread inspired this. In it, he asked if we're becoming too hard to please as gamers because there seems to be no praise for games anymore.
In an effort to think more positively about games (and also to get others into games they had perhaps never played/heard of before, not to mention get us to install those classic games we've always loved, am I the only one who goes back to the same games year after year? Anyway.), I've decided to make a thread asking what YOUR 3 favorite PC games of all time are and why? Not a list of the 3 games you think have had the most influence but rather the top 3 games that you found yourself going back to every few years (if they're older games).
For me:
1) The Heroes of Might and Magic Series (I'm counting this as one). In particular, Heroes II and III. This series to me is just amazing. I fell in love with it when I first played I and II. I'm a sucker for turn-based sims and I just loved the look and the feel of the series. I've put in hundreds of hours into this series, all very well spent. Those of who you have never tried this series owe it to yourselves to give it a try. There's a super-duper-gold-edition now available that contains Heroes I, II, III, and all their expansions (2 for II, and 2 for III iirc). It's only 20 bucks.
2) Xcom: Ufo Defense- Do you guys remember this Micropose game? Those sectoid shrieks still get to me. Awesome game. A real-time/turn-based hybrid sim. Very detailed play. Years ahead of its time IMO. The ability to control every facet of the game like buying ammo, recruiting soldiers/engrs/scientists, equiping weapons, researching any and everything, shooting down ships, maintaining and improving bases, the freaky battles where you saw alien movement in the dark, etc. I played Terror from the Deep after it but wasn't impressed. I never got around to playing the other sequels (Xcom: Apocalypse and Xcom:Interceptor, were there any others?)
3) I can't really just pick one here. There are many games that tie for 3rd on my list.
Syndicate- just awesome. Don't know why. I just loved this game.
Since I'm not a huge rts fan, I've had to relegate those classics to 3rd place. These include Warcraft I, Warcraft II, Starcraft, and C and C: Red Alert. I haven't really been able to get into Warcraft III. I have yet to meet a gamer who has not liked at least one of these games.
Many fps games, most notably Doom II, Half-Life, RTCW, Dark Forces also tie for 3rd for me.
Some honorable mentions: X-Wing, the Simcity series, Civilization series, Duke Nukem 3d, Unreal series, Quake series and many others which I can't think of at the moment.
Add on.

There's way too many good choices. My general dislike of RTS does shorten the list of possible choices though. My personal faves are...
Deus Ex
Rainbow Six series (Rogue Spear especially)
Europa Universalis 2
There are so many other great games though...
Civ series
Ghost Recon
Sims
SimCity series
Sacrifice
and many others

1. Half-Life
2. Starcraft
3. Grim Fandango
Man '98 was a good year.
On a side note: My friend got REALLY adicted to X-Com so I tried it out. I HATED that game! I completely didn't understand what the hell I supposed to be doing. I hated how the aliens would disappear between turns and stuff. It was my first turn based game so I didn't even understand the whole concept behind it. I was all "Why won't my guys move! They're getting shot! Move! Move you bastards!" I still get mad when I think about that game.

Give me Riven, StarCraft, and Grim Fandango (good call Charles C). X-Com was fantastic too -- took me FOREVER and a half to finish it. Duke 3D was a classic - I don't think there has yet been an FPS with a "fun factor" to match that one.

So far this list confirms the fact that most people on this forum are hardcore gamers. Because there really is only one #1 PC game of all time.
The Sims.
It's not my personal favorite, but from a purely objective viewpoint, no one can argue with it.
