Wait...hold on. Don't waste all the drool yet. We still have:

Marvel vs Capcom 2 LIVE

I got it. Played it. Got my butt kicked by 2 guys who were really bad because I can't use pad for a 2d fighting game.

I picked up a NUBY arcade stick and am on my way to return it damn thing to CompUSA. The box on the arcade stick says '2 memory card slots'..it only has 1.The box says 'XBox Live Headset support'. The headset wont fit in the card slot. And to top it off, it wont work on the menus in the LIVE part of the game.....

Stay away from the NUBY stick.

Yeah but that game is garbage, dial a combo nonsense. -ptth-

BernieStolar 02-12-03 07:24 PM

the xbox s controller is frustrating to use for this game. The D pad is slippery and it is hard to do a dragon punch. dont even try to do the specials that involve charging back 2 seconds then forward, then tapping back/forward +punch. The buttons seem to stick sometimes so I have to tap them twice to do my opening attack for a combo. I dont want to buy an arcade stick, but this sucks so far. I can beat the comp with this set up, but against someone who has a controller that will let them do the move they input will kick my ass.

Some quick online impressions:

I played 5 games with someone who lives an hour away. The first game was literally "lag-free." The next 4 games each had a few instances of the game freezing for a second and/or frame rate hiccups. Annoying? Sure. But better than I figured it would be. As an old-school XBander, I can live with a little lag. :)

Obviously, YMMV. ISPs, hardware, distance, time of day...there are several factors that can affect the connection. I've read posts elsewhere which claim almost no instances of lag. Regardless, it was a real blast to be able to play a Capcom fighter, online, with voice chat. And for the die-hard fighting fans, the ability to play gamers in Japan is quite a plus, as isthe chance to be ranked worldwide on a weekly basis.

I intend to play some more tonight, against someone not in the same zip code. ;) I'll post an update after.

Oh, and as for the Type S controller....I have no problems with it. Moves come off pretty easily. Now if only my thumb would quit sliding off he pad and hitting the Start button in the middle of combos.....

jessecrx 02-12-03 08:32 PM

Ah you too were an Xbander?? So were we!! My wife and I used to play on SNES all the time on the xband network! Her username was Fortune Cookie. She would do all the emails and play Mario Kart all the time while I played Super SF 2!!

I will be on later tonight! Username: Team CRX

Thanks for the feedback!

DVDKrayzie 02-12-03 09:27 PM

game is awesome... almost no lag...only problem...XBOX CONTROLLERS SUCK ASS...P groove is just impossible wirth xbox live, and it was my favorite groove

I'm hoping this will help...

Can you believe I have only spent .50 cents on MvC2......seriously, I tried it once and I will never play that game again. After seeing the crap that can be done.....no thanks...I'll pass :D

Now if only they can bring back one massive STREET FIGHTER 2 COLLECTION!!!!

Street Fighter 2 World Warrior LIVE
Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition LIVE
Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting LIVE
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo LIVE

And do the same for the Alpha games and for the sf3 series!!! CAPCOM, HEAR MY PRAYERS!!

menaz 02-12-03 10:18 PM

I agree with DVDKrayzie, the Saturn pad was good for fighting games. Luckily, I built my own Arcade stick using Happ parts so I dont have a controller problem :). Unfortunately, I dont have broadband so no Live for me :(, and I was looking forward to this for a while.

that's terrible. you should get a win and they should have a disconnect. or at least noone gets any marks for or against them if that happens.

Also, a lot of time the music drops out after I defeat an opponent. Did this happen in the arcade version? My last complaint is EO mode is a worthless addition. Sometimes I pick it on accident then have to go all the way back to the main menu to repick AC mode.

Overall this is a great game graphically and with the right control set up, but I'd rather have a perfect port of street fighter III:Third Strike.

DVDKrayzie 02-13-03 12:00 AM

yea, if someone disconnects, even after u beat them, the game gets counted, but you dont get a win. id take sf3 over this anyday, one can only dream :) all the SFs, screw the button-mashing Vs games, also Mk 2 + 3 would be awesome...companies are sitting on a goldmine of already-made games......

Tuan Jim 02-13-03 12:21 AM

Looks like Gabe over at www.penny-arcade.com is having major lag issues as well. Think I'll hold off for the moment and rent this one.

Gallant Pig 02-13-03 12:30 AM

That reads like the problems are all on Gabe's end and his own problem while for other people it works fine (reading all the messages in this thread).

An update on my Live experience....not that it really matters since lag issues seem really across the board....

I played a friend from Vermont for about 3 hours. The first half hour was 100% frustrating. The slide show that Gabe mentions on Penny Arcade was in full effect. Completely unplayable. I was just about ready to give up when I asked the other guy to try unplugging his headset, since I recalled rumors of that technique smoothing out lag on certain games. I figured it was worth a shot. And Presto! No lag. I mean, literally...he unplugged his headset and the game lurched from a slideshow to full-on Turbo play. He plugged it back in and screech! Back to slow mo. The weird thing is I tried doing the same, and it made no difference. Only when HE unplugged his headset did it affect play. And wow, what a difference. The next 2 and a half hours we played non-stop and there wasn't just less lag...there was *no* lag (okay, once every 3 or 4 games maybe, but brief). He'd plug his headset back in between some rounds, and Bam, slow mo, even the menus. Strange, but I was just happy to get smooth play.

I tried playing one other person in between all this, and lag was so-so. There were no pauses, rather the game was just running a little sluggish (and not the Game Speed-affected sluggish, but a laggy sluggish). Didn't seem to affect him though, as he soundly trounced me.

So, overall, I'm pleased. I have no clue what's up with the headset thing, but other than that conflict, all the games I played varied from sluggish-but-playable to 99% lag-free, mostly the latter.

Jessecrx: Yep, a fellow XBander, although I stuck with MK2 and SF (big surprise). Who knew it would take so long to get another online console fighter? :)

No so it must be you.

Gallant Pig 02-13-03 01:41 AM

Getting rid of the headset would cut down on tons of bandwidth. Is it a hot mic like in Mech Assault? If so, that's a lot of IP packets being sent. Pulling that would make lesser connections a lot smoother. Sounds like you have a decent connection so pulling your headset wouldn't do anything Larry. It's probably mostly related to the upload which cable is sorely lacking in.

Lokise 02-13-03 02:17 AM

Thanks for the info Gallant. I was going to ask for a technical explanation and forgot...and there you are!

It just seemed odd to me since I've played this Vermonter several times in Unreal and Mech Assault with the mic on, with very few lag issues. I'm hoping it was just a fluke, and will find out tomorrow. If not, I can live without the chatting if it means a smooth experience.

If anyone else reading this thread encounters this problem, please speak up. You're not alone!! ;)

Gallant Pig 02-13-03 03:30 AM

The more I think about it, the more it seems like it's an upload thing where someone who has a weak upload will create a laggy game for both players. The reason it might seem laggier than other games is because it is such a precise, fast-moving game with split second timing. The slightest monkey wrench in that will make for lag.

How is the host situation. Does one person host the game and the other person accept? Try goofing around with that, maybe the faster of the two connections makes for better games when he/she hosts.

Lastly, I think this is one game where chatter isn't that important. I mean, I didn't like the live mic in MA, I always say smartass things to myself and there are always people that have long conversations with someone else who isn't playing while they are playing. Just the experience of getting a fair playing partner who isn't as predictable or maybe as cheating as the computer is good enough.

AgtFox 02-13-03 08:43 AM

Hey Gallant...what broadband option do you use around these parts? Qwest DSL or Cable Modem? Just wondering...

This is a game that would probably make me get broadband, LIVE and this game. Sure, I'd get my ass handed to me, but it would at least be fun :D

Draven 02-13-03 09:40 AM

I would love to play a good online fighting game.

But that cable pulling crap is unbelievable! C'mon, fix that problem! I don't understand why it's so hard to make sure stuff like that doesn't happen. If your opponent FORFEITS (which is basically what is happening) why in the world WOULDN'T that count as a win for you?

I don't understand why this continues to be an issue.

jessecrx 02-13-03 12:21 PM

Ahhh yes.....pullers are back in full effect! Back when the Xband network was around we dealt with the same problem...sore losers who would pull the connection if they lost...luckily, Xband came up with a way to detect who broke the connection and would forfeit the match to the winner :D

I got home last night around 12midnite central time and got everything set up and I STAYED ON TIL 5AM!!! I was HOOKED!! 95% of my matches were great! The other 5% had some lag but nothing to complain about. I stuck with P-Groove, and the timing of the parries is like SF3 2nd Impact.....meaning you parry earlier thus making it a bit easier. In the arcade version of CVS2 you have a VERY narrow window to parry an attack....I guess either the lag is whats making it easier, or capcom took this factor into consideration and gave a larger windows for parries. I haven't tried it without the headset yet, but I will tonight!

Those of you complaining about lag, all I have to say is keep trying til you get someone with a better connection, or have your connection checked out! My games were running PERFECT!!

My only serious complaint is the Xbox controller. IT SUCKS!!!! I lost alot of games due to the fact that I couldnt do my moves! So, I will be investing in an arcade controller very soon!

I like these Arcade Sticks shown here

Pricey, but well worth it so I hear :)

Look for me online. My tag is Team CRX :D

Josh H 02-13-03 12:29 PM

Not surprised by the lag problems. I'd be shocked if we ever get perfect, lag free, online fighting games with the current broadband infrastructure. It will probably take something a good bit faster than the current speed of broadband to get it perfect. And it has to be perfect for me to enjoy it because fighting games are 100% based on timing and any lag would kill my desire to play it.

It's a shame too, because fighting games are the one type of game I'd be interested in playing online. Matches are short, so quitting wouldn't be as big of a problem as in sports games that take 30 minutes or more to complete. Plus they're easier to pick up and play for a few minutes for the same reason.

Gallant Pig 02-13-03 02:23 PM

It is their first try, so hopefully it will get better. Sounds like pulling the mic makes it much better so it's not all that bad. I bet if they rigged it so you could talk between games and not during games it would be much better.

zerotl 02-13-03 04:15 PM

Will this game work with x-arcade and xblive at the same time? Anyone with the same setup?

jessecrx 02-13-03 05:02 PM

Yes, as of now, X-Arcade is 100% compatible with Xbox. And it has headset compatability :)

cartman 02-13-03 08:29 PM

Well, I finally got X-Box live to play the Capcom games online (no other live games have interested me thanks to my PC). I've only played 3 online matches, and the one I won, he pulled his frickin cable (lost two, went to practice in "training" for a bit, came back). It was fun kicking his Evil Ryu and Super Akuma's asses with Dan, though :D. Nothing like finishing a match with Dan's super-puncy-kicky combo thing to make a man proud.

I'm "Oz Rosenberg" online if anyone wants to play.

jessecrx 02-13-03 10:34 PM

I'll be on later tonight. I picked up the REFLEX stick from EB games for a sweet 16 bucks. Lets just hope it performs well enough to play. Right now, ANYTHING is better than using the S-Controller!

My tag is Team CRX

isamu 02-13-03 11:21 PM

What the heck? We get SNKvsCapcum but we can't get Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo for LIve? BLASPHEMY!!

cartman 02-14-03 01:04 AM

Thanks for the games :D. I had my headset plugged in, but wasn't hearing anything. Might have been that I didn't plug it in when I originally connected.

Yeah, I pretty much suck right now. I've not played any of the Capcom fighting games since MvC2 on the dreamcast came out. I used to be good, I swear! And my infatuation with Dan is just that he's so fun to play with, and no one ever expects you to play with him!

Is there a way to find "friend's" games, or is it just a "look on the player list and hope someone is there" kind of thing?
