bump for that... I assume a low end comp with a decent hard drive (couple of gigs) and a video out output should work fine... How many games do you have?

I'm thinking I can do finally do something with a low end 486

Computer specs.

I have a AMD 1600 XP, with an Epox 8kha+ motherboard. One 30 Gig HD and one 40 Gig HD. I am going S-Video out of my Radeon.

My computer is overkill for the machine, but a computer has to be semi-decent to run some of the newer games. It stuttered pretty badly on my work computer (EMachine POS, but a 1 gig processor.)

I was planning on buying parts for a cheap system to run MAME, but I upgraded my main rig to edit video for my job (and freelance work) so I had the spare parts to my already decent computer system. And yes, it will work as an mp3 jukebox as well.

Would you be able to/Do you plan to run console emulators? (For playing roms that you own the original for, naturally )

Well a Mame Cabinet is something I've been thinking about starting for around a year. Right now I have an Uncabineted PC running Virtual Jukebox Software. It's a PIII 750 Mhz machine with a 200GB HD. Since I have so much space I've been considering double dutying the machine as a Mame machine. I unfortunately don't have all the tools neccessary to build the cab (probably not the skill also) but my brother in Law is in construction he just has no time. My only other alternative is finding a cabinet to refurb.

Both units look very nice. Good work guys. It looks like you used a modified version of the Lusid setup shown here.

It seems to be the most popular form factor.

I would try a Google Search so you don't get anyone in trouble here. There are some places that do mail order pretty cheap. I found a complete .64 set of 14 CD's for around $20 shipped.

Newsgroups are the best option if you have broadband, if not, the folks at http://www.tombstones.org.uk/ will send you a full set on CD's free of charge.

Nope, they are no longer allowed:

If I were to buy one made instead of putting it together myself, how much would that cost me?

here's one my buddy made. it's pretty sweet. he made it for pretty cheap... i think 75 for the cabinet (which you can see is just an old mario brothers cab) and then maybe 50 for the computer gear (he's one of those guys with 20 computers laying around) and then another 20 or so for the buttons maybe? The thing I like is the metal plate he made to work with the buttons.

Oh, and if you need any PROOF of his computergeekness.... here's a computer he assembled the other day

With the cheap cost of CD-Rs it sounds like this guy's making a profit. Plus, a full set the available ROMS should only take up 7 or 8 discs.

They go for a lot, which is why people build them themselves.

This one goes for a whopping $4000:

I'll look on Ebay, I'm sure they're cheaper than that.

If I had to do it again, I'd probably refurb an existing cabinet.

It would have been a lot easier. Everything already fits together, I'd just have to add things to it.
