I agree Fatal Frame, so scary, I wait for my wife to come home so we can both be scared while I play.

She doesn't want to play anymore cause it scares her too much.

So the game sits...

The Resident Evil series always scares me, especially Lisa....good god... the first encounter gave me chills. Also when zombies bust in, I always jump back. Haven't had a chance to play RE0 yet but i'm looking forward to it.

Silent Hill 1 also creeped me out, I liked the way Kellehair described it. Something about wandering through an elementary school in the dark with a flashlight running from demon children was really disturbing.

Though it isn't a survival horror title, Eternal Darkness has its scary moments. When your character starts losing it, some of their delusions (sanity effects) are creepy. And, there's one part in the mansion that scared the sh** out of me, but i don't want to spoil that for those that haven't played it.

Fatal Frame also has a good atmosphere and paranoia factor, the blinding mask is one of the sickest things i've ever seen.

what kind of game is system shock 2? i've never heard of it but it sounds like something to look into

SS2 is like Deus Ex except it's more fast-paced, more intense, and 1000 times scarier/creepier.

Halo is creepy when THe Flood are running around gurgling in 5.1 sound

they come up behind you and it's creepy sounding.

Bloodrayne is scary when the Mutant Nazis and Mutant parasites are after you.

I just started re-playing this again and it still makes me jump the second time through.

I just played Halo for the first time in months, and I thought it was weird that it freaked me out, but it did. I don't have 5.1 sound (yet, at least), but I imagine that would be much scarier.

Resident Evil 1 (at least at the time it came out)

The first Silent Hill (unprecedented creepy and disturbing atmosphere and imagery)

System Shock 2

I know this game isn't supposed to be scary, but Day of Defeat has had some really jumpy moments. I end up jumping a lot when stalking through a room and someone comes running in suddenly. Or I turn around to find someone right behind me. I jump, the mouse goes flying, I miss my shot and then get killed.

I thought that Eternal Darkness did a really good job establishing a creepy mood, especially in the mansion.

Doom, System Shock 2, Half-Life, AvP, RTCW (the zombie catacombs part) have all creeped me out at one time or another.

This is a game I just can't get into sitting at my computer, even though I have a more-than-adequate rig. I just can't spend the same amount of time playing games on my PC as I can sitting on the sofa playing them on a big television.

It's too bad they don't just make a quickie port over to the XBox.

I'm suprised that many people still remembered SS2. Despite being an extremely high quality game, System Shock 2 was still a financial failure. That's why there were no ports made for video games.

The two System Shock games were probably one of the most underrated series of all time. Most serious gamers and game publications loved it, but they just did not do well at all from the economic side. I remembered reading years ago at PC Gamer that System Shock 2 only sold something like 54,000 units vs. 1.7 million units that Deer Hunter x (forgot which version, but all of them stinkers) did. Unfortunately, quality games don't always translate to best sellers, especially in the case of the System Shock series. And without Looking Glass, there may never be a System Shock 3...

The King Field Series/Eternal Ring.
The nonstop dark and creeping atmosphere can really mess with my head on those games. Not many people talk to, just you and evil creatures lurking in dark.

The original Alone in the Dark for the PC. The grandfather of survival horror games. The atmosphere of that game was so creepy. Great sound effects and music.

I don't think I've ever played a game that freaked me out as much as Aliens vs Predator. Play as the Marine and use only flares.

I may have to install and play System Shock 2 for old times sake. Hybrids and those monkeys sure are creepy. And the voices: "Babies must sleep. Babies must rest. Wise is the one who does not waken them. Leave this place now, or we will wound you, as you have us."

Ahh, good times.

Well, even though Looking Glass is gone we are still getting Thief 3 for the XBox. And Irrational Games, the developers of SS2, have continued with the equally-underrated Freedom Force and the upcoming The Lost for XBox and PS2.

I think our best hope would be if Microsoft pulled a "Bungie" and bought Irrational to develop SS3 exclusively for the XBox...

There was a recent review with Ken Levine where he mentioned that an upcoming Irrational game will be "similar" to System Shock. I think EA owns the rights to SS, SHODAN, Tri-Op, etc.., so they'll probably go for some kind of unofficial SS game (similar interface, environment), but it won't have all the storyline elements that SS fans know & love. Personally, I think they should try and buy back those rights somehow.

For some reason, I used to get creeped out when I would play Diablo late at night in my basement. It never bothered me playing during the day, and I never got the heebie jeebies playing Diablo 2.

Another game no one mentioned was Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Most of the game is pretty normal action, but the parts in the catacombs with the zombies jumping out of the walls really made my palms sweat.

Even though I prefer Diablo II overall, I think the original had a creepier atmosphere & music. Being stuck all alone in that dungeon was generally a lot scarier than running around in the outdoors the way you were in Diablo II.

And yeah, that first catacomb in RtCW made me jump out of my seat more than once.

1)The Haunted House in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3

2)The Neversoft girls in THPS3...talk about bad rendering!

3)The Los Angeles level in THPS3 when you have to jump from building to building to get the secret tape...I felt really claustrophobic and didn't want to fall off...scary stuff!
