I don't know why, but whenever I see adults (30ish and up) looking at buying in the game section it strikes me as odd... Maybe that's because all the adults I know don't play them, or consider it a waste of time. My gaming interest died off for a little bit at the start of this generation but it has been re-kindled :) I'm pretty sure I'll be gaming when I'm an old-timer ;)

I'm 29 (hit over the hill next month), married with a 10 month son.
My parents wouldn't buy the Atari, so I had to buy it myself. I did have a TV in my room at the time, but it was a Sylvania black and white TV!!! I still have all of my systems and tons of games, but am currently just playing the XBOX. I have: Atari 2600 Atari 7800 Nintendo Super Nintendo Sega Genesis PS1 XBOX After our son was born, I didn't play much, but for Christmas my wife bought me a new XBOX game (the new Bond) saying that I hadn't bought any new games lately. Needless to say, I was floored. I've been burning the Midnight oil since Christmas!!!! |
Re: How many over the hill gamers are out there?
I'm 29, have a live-in g/f, no kids and I still play video games leisurely. I game on my GC, PS2, GBA and PC.
HISTORY : I've been playing games since the very early 80's., first in the arcades, like Chuck E Cheese, playing Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Zaxxon, Spy Hunter, Q-Bert, etc. My parents then got me and my brother a Atari 2600 for X-mas. We then got a Coleco Vision when that came out and the a NES. In the mid-80's I also started playing games on the Commodore 64 and Amiga, but then around 1989 I stopped playing games altogether because of school and sports (except for occasional plays with my brother's GameBoy). When I got out of school and sports, I came back to the gaming world around 1997 when I saw my brother playing DIABLO on his PC. Baldur's Gate and Fallout sealed the deal and I was a gamer again. I then picked up a N64, but sold it after a year. I mainly played PC games under last year when I got a PS2, GC and more recently a GBA. My fave games are RPGs on the PC, followed by Nintendo/old school type games (like Metroid, Zelda, Contra, Castlevania, Mario, etc.). I'm kind of an oddity in the current gaming world since I'm not a fan of shooters, sports games or the GTA series, which seems to be the top 3 type of games in general. Heck I don't even like the watered down console RPGs. Not much left, but I get by. :) |
30. Been a repressed gamer since my mother told me to stop going over to a friend house everyday to play his atari...
Most I got was a game for my TI99/4A, Parsec with two funky joysticks. Also had a hand held Coleco football game that I played until the button switches on the pcb wore out. One summer, played Empire on campus computers 'till the sun came out, and then I broke down and bought a game for my mac (not the best gaming computer)...used to play it until I got sweat stains on my wood desk... Now, fully financially independent with a professional career, I bought my third Xbox and play Ghost Recon exclusively on my 27' with component video connections and 5.1 sound. This Xbox ain't gonna be returned! YES, I AM COMING OUT OF THE CLOSET: I AM PROUD TO BE A GAMER! I like this thread. ....back to work and real life... |
3 pages? I guess I'm not alone.
|
coolio... looks like my dad has the title... 53 years old and he plays games every single day. :) hell, he plays more often than I do lol! the benifits of having a 8-5 job vs college. ;)

82 and still kicking...
the first time I ran into the last boss on Final Fantasy X I actually threw my dentures at the screen outta frustration. |
36, single, no kids - just picked up an Xbox to go with my new widescreen tv, and the PS2 and Dreamcast already jacked in... Been a gamer since I can remember, most especially the old Avalon Hill wargames... Magic Realm anyone?

I thought over-the-hill meant someone in their forties.
I'm 34 and here's my list of systems and I have tons of games for each. I plan to buy the PS2 and the GC (when it drops down in price). Atari 2600 (Don't have anymore) Sega Game Gear Sega Genesis Sega CD (yes I bought one) Sega Saturn Sega Dreamcast Super Nintendo N64 Sony Playstation MS X-Box I love playing games and will continue to play. The average gamer now-a-days is around 28, per EGM FEB 2003 Issue. You may want to pick up the Issue and have your wife read the editorial on page 14. It seems as if most of us are from the Arcade and Atari 2600 days. |
I,m 44 and still going strong. Love to play the AOE series on the PC and Tactical Ops online. I,ve owned a console ever since the original pong game came out at Sears..(anyone remember colecovision?) Now i,m online with X box playing GR and MotoGP on a 50 inch screen with DD 5.1. I,m not the best but do ok and have a blast playing. I love to hear the comments when I tell the young pups I just beat I,m 44.......priceless....!

Sounds like I'm the old man of the bunch. I just turned 45 and I play X-Box every day. I grew up on Intellivision, Atari, Colecovision, Nintendo, etc. My wife even plays it (not as much as I do though).

I'm, 17!
|
Im 33, married (no kids)and have a PS1, N64, and a GAMECUBE. I will be buying an XBOX soon. A Lot of my friends in the same age all love video games too. ITs what we do. We dont play poker or go hunting, unless its hunting each other in multiplayer! ;) Its the new 'male bonding' thing for the 21st century.
I also collect some toys. I guess I will never grow up. :) |
I'm 37. Just got back into gaming last year when a friend who works for Microsoft sent me a free xbox. I'm back into it more and am getting my GBA SP this weekend for portability.

I remember saving up money for my Atari 2600 system. I still remember the price: $124 at the time I bought it. Pitfall was my favorite game. I just turned 30 last month and currently have an XBox, Gamecube, and PS2 hooked up to a 65" WS HDTV. I also have a PS1 and 3DO system that are easily hooked up to the front of the tv.
I was so excited yesterday when I stopped by Target and picked up the Activision Anthology disc for PS2 (Clearance for $7.48). I rushed home, threw it in and played Pitfall for the first time in 15 years or so. It's much easier than I remember it. Got my patch, TV commercial unlock and lasted all 20 minutes in my first try. The background songs are great (although they need a lot more). So yeah, over the hill and enjoying the slide down!! |
heeeye i'm 32!! it rocks to be settled with nice income and play games, you dont have to be too concerned about cost ;)
|
I'm 29 and dont see myself stopping gaming any time soon.
|
39 and started with the Sears Tele-Games PONG "system". Now *THAT* was exciting when that was one of the first devices of it's kind. Hooking it up to the antenna inputs (no, not a coax input, the screws .. where the tv antennas were attached to!) and using the RF Switch. :)
Moved up to the Atari VCS (2600), brother got an apple ][+, then I got an Atari 800 (MULE!!! andI ran the Devil's Tower BBS off of it! Ahh 300bps modems...), Atari ST (skipped the Nintendo NES phase...).. and then got the Genesis, Genesis CD, then Playstation, N64, Dreamcast, Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, GBA, NDS... Basically, I'm insane. :) |
I am 57 and still an avid player (and buyer) of PC games. I pretty much stick to strategy and puzzle games where I can use my mind and not my reflexes.
My twitch and jerk abilities are pretty much shot to keep up with modern console games so I rarely play them anymore. It's just too frustrating when you know what you need to do, but your brain is too slow to do it. I followed the path of Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, and Sega Genesis so I have played most of the console "classics". My daughter has a PS1 but I never got into it. I think at this point I prefer PC games because they have more controls and settings that make games more interesting for me. The video resolution might be better as well. |
30 here and still play video games. No kids, unless you count 2 dogs as kids.
I think over the hill in gamer terms is anyone over 18. It seems that the average age on XBox live for any given game is around 15. |
Turned 32 on the 11th of Dec. Still playing and no end in sight.
|
I'm 43, divorced, 9 year-old daughter. We have a Gamecube and she's turning into a little RPGer. Loves Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia and Baten Kaitos. One great thing is that she loves to fight the enemies so she levels up all the characters for me. We also still have a NES, Genesis, Colecovision and two Vectrex that still work fine.
