I'm pretty sure that posting a thread entitled: "What's the First Sign that your XBOX is about to die?" is the first sign that your Xbox is about to do die.

Well, I got my xbox last Thursday. They opened up the case and best I can tell they replaced the DVD drive. Everygame I had trouble with earlier is working great now. It only took a week from when I sent it to when I get the repaired unit back. And, best of all the whole deal was free. Microsoft. You have one happy customer here.

Conceptially, the idea of "boiling" the discs is to remove any dirt or grease such as finger smudges and such, which does not come off quiet as well at room temperature. Therefore, boiling a disc will help if you had one that needed cleaning. On the other hand, it certainly will not help if there's anything else wrong with the disc itself, no matter how much you boil or fry it.

Apparently certain types of repairs qualify for a free repair even if the original xbox warranty expired. My xbox was originally purchased in November 2001. It is experiencing intermittent dirty disc errors and freezes during game play and intermittent freezes and "pixelation" during dvd play.
FYI - they will ask where you store your console. Make sure you tell them it is in a well vented area with plenty of space around the console, otherwise you may not qualify for a free repair.
