I never said they were. Even though you completely missed the point that everyone else got fine, I'm still glad you're so good at amusing yourself.

Great posts, tha_dvd_man.

I have to admit, the majority of the games I enjoy right now from Japan are sequels or similar style gameplay to what they've created 10-20 years ago : (Contra, Castlevania, Metroid, Super Mario, Zelda, etc.).

Could it be nostaglia from my gaming days in the 80's? Or just that the gameplay was so good, why fix what isn't broken?

I don't know the answer, but I'll keep playing them because they are blast to play.

LOL, I think I stop before it gets really nasty everyone has there tastes and opinions and think we should treat this like console bashing. Words like wrong and asinie describing someone's taste in popular japanese games(culture) is really bad. You have say then that coming Zelda, past Mario, Mario 64, OOT, etc then are in fact that. The day video game industry has little japanese influence is time for alot diehard gamers to quite. Shocking as it might for some there many that dont have any attraction to mainstream us only games, first person blood fests, sports or MTV mentality, and understand japanese philosy of returning to filimar place you love verse every stinkn title having to be innovative. Proof why bestselling game of recent Dragon Quest 7 is leader. I guess this is good forum to get away with obvious misplaced american patritism because you get ripped new one any place serious gamer hang out.

*cough Tribes cough* Ok.. the single player in tribes was pretty weak, but Halo was just a somewhat polished game, nothing innovative, IMO.

Anyway.. I disagree with most of what you said. True, western developers are making more open-ended games, but I don't view that as a good thing. GTA and Morrowind bored me after a few hours of play. I still re-play very linear games from the 80s and 90s today. Your opinion is that open-ended gameplay is the future of gaming, so you think Western developers are better. My opinion is that linear games are still more fun and overall better than open-ended games, so Japanese developers are also, for the most part, better.

Also, I couldn't find anything about what Halo 2 will be like.. just that it will focus on multiplayer.. yeah.. that's something new.......

my mistake , i haven't read any info for halo 2.

Please describe them.
I could describe them but you would probably argue that they all revolve around basic concepts, and they do. but all games can be broken down like that when looked at in that way, even the games you mentioned. My point was that it is the new approaches to basic concepts that make them cool, be they stylistic ones or an added feature, same for western developers. In my opinion, that makes them innovative, but this is only my opinion, and clearly my definition of "innovative" is not as specific as yours, but thats cool, diversity is what makes us intersting people .

The Japanese are good are presenting old ideas in a new and more stylish way
Is that really such a bad thing? I play games to have fun, if it helps me have more fun than so be it, as i stated before it all comes down to the types of games you like to play . My gaming tastes are quite vaired all over the map, but what it really comes down to is the actual game itself, and it doesn't matter if its made in the US or Japan for me, what matters is if it is fun.

This is like arguing over whether burgers or burritos are better. It's all personal taste... meat, cheese and bread. I personally like American developers best, but that's the style of games I like. Japanese developers are good too.

I couldn't have said it better myself , thats what i was trying to say but it kept getting convoluted when i type it out, i wasn't trying to start an arguement, but i think i should have kept my opinions to myself lol.

BTW, burgers beat burritos anyday

What I think is funny how some people in tis thread will say X games break new boundries first, and then say X games are better because they are more refined. Which one is it?

Does that make sense?

I dunno, all I know is there are apparently a lot of Josh-class developers in today's console scene.
