Question re: playstation 2 for my son

I'm planning on buying the PS2 for my son for xmas. Could someone tell me what additional accessories I'll need to buy along with the console (i.e. cables, 2nd controller, memory, etc.)? Thanks.

You need a memory chip. That's about it. Another controller if you think it's necessary. Get GTA Vice City as well, he'll be happy you did (if he is 18 or over).

I agree. All you need is a memory card and a game so that he can begin playing it immediately.

It comes with video cables, so make sure the TV has a video input. (If not, you will also need an RF adaptor to connect to the antenna/cable input.) A 2nd controller isn't a necessary purchase.

I would say the memory card and a network adaptor. Socom, Madden, TMB:Online are all amazing. I have yet to play tribes or NBA Live 2003 but they both look great also.

Memory chip = memory card. They're those 8MB memory cards for ~$25. They almost necessary. For me, that was the only accessory I bought. Rest are optional depending on your needs.

Thanks for the responses. My son is 18.

Are there different sizes of memory cards? Is 8MB what I want?

I'll also get a second controller. Should I also get an S-video cable?

Definitely get GTA3 and/or GTA: Vice City.

Edited to add: If you can only get one of the two, I suggest Vice City.

There's only one PS2 memory card: yellow package with a black memory card. Any similiar looking one is a PS1 memory card.

Actually, now they make a 2-pack, with one red and one blue memory card. And it is an actual Sony, not some off-brand.

There is a good difference in quality if you upgrade to the S-video cable. But it's your money.
