I bought cable extensions about 3 or 4 years ago for my PS1. I use the same extensions for my PS2 now. Never any problems and they totally rock ass. You can play from the couch which is FAR across the room.

I wouldn't worry too much about those reviews... Chances are someone had a PS2 problem and they called Sony. When they caled Sony they probably mentioned that they used third party extensions so the CSR told them that's what caused the problem. I'm sure all three console producers would say the same thing - you're using an unnlicensed product so the risk is yours. (All it really means is if you have a problem with your console don't ever tell them that you used anything but official peripherals.)
I've been using cable extensions for my PS2 and Gamucube (the Xbox cords are the only ones that reach my couch without an extension) for months and haven't had any problems.

unless the cable had a short in it I see no way it could fry the system.
In fact even if it had a short in it the most likely result would be the controller would not work correctly not that the PS2 would be fried.
