Thank you for the EXCELLENT post. It's hard for us old people to find out what is going on with some games. I hate clans and cheating and it has been hard to figure out some of the behind the scenes stuff. I figured the SOJ was some sort of hack, way to many floating around.

I admit that I did dupe in the original game. I had ungodly plate of whale and a AAA staff of apocalypse ( i believe the most powerfull weapon for the first diablo) But this quickly ruined the game.

I also hate duels. It ruins the game because you dont know what kind of cheat your opponent will pull.

Mainly, my strategy is to build my NECRO and build perfect gems. Once I have 5 perfects of each I will give that up (very close to that) I play a lot of COW levels, but that can get annoying with lame players not fighting only to swoop in and steal the drops while you are doing all of the dirty work.

I like the game still, but it can get annoying at times. A link would be great so that I could learn what cheats are out there.

Again, thanks for the excellent post !
You're welcome

I looked around, but there really isn't any place that have a detailed list of all the D2 cheats available. (Well, maybe except the sites with the actual cheats/hacks) I guess this was intentional so it's harder for cheaters to locate these stuff. This is the closest thing I found -

http://www.diabloii.net/battlenet/warnings.shtml

A lot of the things mentioned has actually been corrected, but at least it gives you an idea about the craps that goes on in Battle.net.

Sad but true. I admire the people for their technical skill at doing so, but gosh do I hate having to play against them. You really have to wonder. If somebody has to boost their ego by cheating at an online game, they must have no life.
Jeff, you couldn't be more correct about cheating. However, only a select few people possess the technical skills to exploit the holes in Blizzard's game codes. They are the ones who wrote the cheats and hacks. The rest are just a bunch of infantiles who are taking advantage of the situation since there are no consequences to suffer.

Trust me, you will be discourged from cheating if you have to suffer the consequences when you got caught. Think about how many people cheats in high school (some), and how many people cheats in college (a lot less since you get expelled). Same deal with stealing (goes from fines/supervision up to times in the big house). It just seems like some people are looking at cyberspace as an alternate reality where they can live out their crime-induced fantasies and steal, swindle, cheat, and pillage as they please. I can only hope these people don't get so delusional that they start living this way in real-life as well.

I played Diablo 2, but I never got the expansion. I bought it when it came out in June, and I stopped playing a couple of weeks before PS2 came out. Actually, I may have quit when the Age of Kings expansion came out.

I had a necromancer at something like level 40, and I had the full complement of top Necro unique items(+7 to all skills), due to some crafty wheeling and dealing. and I was bored with the game. This was pre-duping, so I sold all my junk on e-bay and made about $300.
Wow, you really made out big time with your items. That was during the time when SOJs were selling on eBay for like $20 a piece and Silks of the victor for like $60 - 100.

I quit playing D2 around last Christmas, and didn't start again until this June. I had forgotten that inactivity on Battle.net for 3 months would get your characters deleted, so I lost 95% of the items when I came back. I must have lost over $1,000 from that...

I guess I must have more luck than you then.

It was easier to find SOJ during the pre-expansion days. Actually, the trick is to carry a Naglering and a Manald Heal (both lesser unique rings), and don't have any SOJ in your possesion. Then the next unique ring you find will be a SOJ. This information was not revealed until several months before the release of Lord of Destruction.

At the current version, I think the odds is only like 1/36 or 1/64 of all unique ring drops would be an SOJ, so it's really tough now.

Sorry for the consecutive posts, it was a lame attempt on my part to pad the post count up to 250.

But now back to the original thread topic. It may be more difficult to implement cheats/hacks for online console games, but I would not be suprised if cheating becomes common place. Gameshark was created due to demands for unlimited lives, invincibility, etc. Companies (hackers) can certainly cater to the demands for cheats and make additional hardware to tie-in to the consoles and unbalance the game in the cheater's favor.

This is especially true for X-box, the most PC-like of all the consoles. It would be very possible for hackers to write up a little something and upload it into the harddrive, then upon starting a game all the cheats would have been pre-loaded and ready to roll. MS would not be able to stop this until they analyze the hacks and develope specific counter measures. Again, if people are not discouraged from cheating it will continue to happen.

After watching the Gameshark destroy Dreamcast's Phantasy Star Online and Speed Devils Online, I'd bet on Xbox Live to be the safest place from cheating.

One ID on a closed network you have to subscribe to? And with Xbox Gameshark still vaporware? With the only threat being hackers possibly exploiting harddrives? I'd take that in a second over what happened with Sega.

Sony should work with InterAct to develop a way for games/online service to detect the gameshark.

Don't worry, I did that too.

I actually got $50 for my SOJ, if you can believe that. Cheating will really ruin a game with persistant characters, though.
