An improved sequel and a ____-killer aren't the same thing.

C&C Tiberian Sun - the long awaited game with so many delays... and then when it finally came out, it was poor gameplay

NBA2k1,NBA2k2 - the original NBA2k had great gameplay

FF8 - what was Square thinking?

WSB2k1 - great graphics, poor gamplay (no outfield control)

I guess we've got different definitions then. To use the current example, a "Bond-killer" to me means that Perfect Dark is superior to the previous game or games in the series or genre. Whether it's really superior or not, most of the time the marketing people are certainly going to claim that a sequel is better than it's predecessor.

How can one forget Bubsy? That game was supposed to be the second coming but ended up sucking hard.

Regardless, it was hyped heavily as being better than Bond, I remember it being touted as a Bond killer, and it sucked... hard.

Thats my opinion, can we just live with it, please?

I can't believe people argue that someone can be disappointed by a game. I was! Don't try to argue that I wasn't!

Simple simple.

You can be as disappointed as you want. PD was never touted as a Bond-killer though. That was my only point. Not once did I say PD was good, bad, or whatever.

Perfect Dark was touted as a Bond killer.. Many reviews, previews said it..

You are saying that there is not one review out there that touted Perfect Dark as being a Bond Killer, or one preview?

They still have a review of the game at www.gamepro.com touting it as being the best FPS and being leagues better than GoldenEye, you can also use www.google.com to search for "perfect dark bond killer" and I am sure you'll come up with some reviews touting Perfect Dark as a Bond Killer.

It wasnt a Bond Killer to me though, it was a hunk of crap.
It wasn't even better than Bond, nor equal. Yet every reviewer said it was. Yet I thought it was crap.

Good?

I find it funny that you claim to know what EVERY source of news on Perfect Dark said, that not ONE review/preview/news article on it touted it as a Bond Killer.

Does it really matter if one person, or even 10 people, thought PD was a Bond-killer? Nope. In an issue this broad you have to go with the consensus. Most people will tell you PD wasn't supposed to be a Bond-killer, just a semi-sequel.

It seems you choose to use Clintonisms...

I said It was touted as a Bond killer. It was by many.
*EVERYONE* basically said it was going to be better than Bond.

Once again, *I* was disappointed with it. *I* was also believing it to be the Bond-killer from the hype and press.

It sucked.

We can argue about this all day Kellehair, but your Clintonisms don't change a thing.

And does it really matter if one person, or even 10 people, thought PD was just a semi-sequel?

Of course they did. The object of a sequel is to make a better game. That doesn't mean PD was supposed to be a Bond-killer though.

BTW, I hate Clinton.

I nominate Baseball 2K1 for Dreamcast. Yuck. Big name developer, great expectations, crappy controls. Blech!

Final Fantasy 9 - story was such a yawn I had to force myself to complete it. The worst FF I have played.

Daggerfall - sounded so good in concept but execution just wasn't there (looking at a map of thousands of locations which you know are just about all the same doesn't tend to inspire me). Maybe was ahead of it's time..

YujiNaka vs. Kellehair for MSExplorer6 looked like it was going to be good, but it just fizzled out in the end. Very disappointing.

For me:

Metal Gear Solid 2(PS2): This game was crap, I waited and waited for this title after the original came out. Boy was I disappointed. The gameplay mechanics were good, the graphics were good but the storyline was beyond ridiculous and Raiden was a *****. (it was also way to easy, even on hard)

FF8 (PS1): What was Square thinking when they released this disc? I mean come on, after only a few hours in the fields drawing magic and your character has max stats in one area? The story was poorly written, and graphics took centre stage. Give me a 2D game with a great story (FF6) and I'll be happy for at least 40 hours.

Those are two that instantly come to mind, there are others but I'll save them for next time.

Well at least we can agree on one thing Kellehair,...

Clinton sucks. Both of them actually.

Wow, I couldn't disagree more with some of the games listed. I loved Chrono Trigger, NBA2k1, NBA2k2 (DC), and Perfect Dark.

And to clear something up, yes, PD was widely spread as a game to surpass what Goldeneye did. This was all done in the media though. I don't think that Rare/Nintendo had anything to do with it. Personally, I didn't care if it was better than Goldeneye or not. I just wanted to play it. So I played and loved it. Great single player and co-op and the best multiplayer on console to date.

What didn't you like about it, YujiNaka?

Games that disappointed me:

Hmm, it's hard to think of one. I guess Soldier of Fortune for PC. That game had no depth.

I guess I don't hype myself up to many games..

Great point. Hillary slipped my mind for a minute. I guess that's because she hasn't had time to do that much damage to our country yet.

I don't think anyone was disappointed by Chrono Trigger. That was one of the best games ever. I was disappointed by its sequel, Chrono Cross, though. That was...crappy.

I was. Even though I liked some things about it, such as the lack of random battles, the game never drew me in like other good RPGs have. I never really cared about the characters and the game just didn't keep my interest. It actually ended up sitting on my shelf for two years until I forced myself to finish it. I think FF2, FF3, and Secret of Mana are much better games.

I also disagree with some of the games people list, but that's to be expected with a topic such as this. I love Perfect Dark and it's probably my favorite multi-player game of all time.

I don't see what everybody's problem is with Final Fantasy 8. I thought it had one of the coolest opening scenes where you storm the beach. The storyline was pretty good, characters were alright. FF9 is the one I could never get into. I started it out, and after about 2 hours I couldn't stand it, and that's all I have to say about that.

As for me the most disappointing games in my mind were Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2). Raiden, to many cinematics, not enough playing. Tiberian Sun (PC) I even ordered the platinum edition of this game. Infantry graphics were horrid, and other units structures weren't any better...also didn't like the gameplay. This is coming from somebody who LOVES C&C. Good thing they redeemed themselves with Red Alert 2 & Yuri's Revenge, can't wait for C&C Generals!

I'm afraid that the same will be true for Duke Nukem Forever. After waiting this long it can't be as good as we hope. Then again Max Payne did turn out to be pretty good.

Here's my take on MGS2: The first had some really great gameplay and whatnot, but I found the dialogue to be laughable (love on a battlefield?!?) and the plot to be fairly silly. But what everyone seemed to think was so great about the game was its movie-like qualities (or at least, that's all I read in magazines), so I just knew Konami was going to do more of that in the sequel. I didn't realize how bad it would be, though.
