Am I hurting my GameCube?

I have a question on how to properly take the game out of my GameCube. I know it sounds silly, but I started to worry if I'm doing it right.

Is the proper way to:

(1)While the game is running, like say Rogue Leader, do I open the disc cover first??? This seems weird to me. It's like I'm breaking it while its running the actual game.

(2)Then after I return the game to its own case, I close the cover and press power? Huh? That's what the instruction booklet says, but I think they have it backwards. It would make sense to turn the power off first, then switch games.

What do you guys do? Or what should we do, is the question.

Also, is it bad to leave the game in there after you play? Sometimes I'm lazy and I leave that sucker in the system. I do that with my DVDs too. I hope the disc doesn't deteriorate from the heat. Man, I'm a rebel, aren't I??

I turn the power off and let it finish spinning before I open it and remove the game.

I think it's good either way. Nintendo actually has a protection from rebooting should you open the lid accidentally during gameplay. Unlike the PS2, X-Box, and DC where when you open the lid/tray it reboots and goes to the system menu screen.

It wouldn't hurt any system if you open it's lid/tray by accident or if you open it and take the game out with the power on as far as I know. But then again I don't think it's encouraged to do so either.

The Dreamcast had the same instructions in it's manual. I believe the reason for it is when you pop the lid the dvd lens goes back to the rest position, and there's less of a chance for you to bump it when taking the disc out. When you just power down the lens stays in whatever position it was reading. I would think it's fine to power down first as long as you don't bump the lens. (though I always popped the top of my dreamcast first before removing the disc)

That may be part of the reason, but I'm pretty sure that the primary reason is that the GC (and DC) stop the disc for you if you open it with the power on. They don't want anybody injuring themselves taking the disc out.

Also, on the Dreamcast it was recommended that you switch games by opening the lid while the power was on and switching games, after which the DC would automatically load the new game. However, as somebody already mentioned, the GC has a safeguard against accidental openings so it won't reboot even w/ a new game in it. So when I switch games I open it up w/ the power on, then switch discs, then close the lid and hit reset.

Yeah, thanks for the replies.

it was something small that kind of worried me, but now I guess it is actaully okay if you pop the lid open first. It seemed odd to me in the beginning, because the last system I owned was the N64, and there you had to power down, then remove the game. Doing it vice versa would screw the game up potentially. I never had a Dreamcast so I didn't know that it was similar. GC is my first CD-based system. Thanks.
